Police chief said he shot wife moving gun in bed

ATLANTA — A police chief in Georgia told a 911 dispatcher he accidentally shot his sleeping wife while moving a handgun that was in their bed, according to a recording released Friday.

Peachtree City police Chief William McCollom called for help at 4:17 a.m. New Year's Day and reported accidentally shooting his 58-year-old wife, Margaret, while they both slept. The Associated Press obtained a recording of the call Friday through an open records request. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.

McCollom spoke calmly in the audio recording, telling a dispatcher he needed medical help for an accidental gunshot wound at his suburban home, about 30 miles southwest of Atlanta.

"Who shot her?" the dispatcher asked.

"Me," McCollom said. "The gun was in the bed, I went to move it, and I put it to a side and it went off."

Beaumont Man Hit by Vehicle, Stabbed Amid Argument with Mother of his children

Police say a 34-year-old Beaumont man suffered minor injuries when the mother of his children hit him with a vehicle then stabbed him during an argument in a parking lot.

In a statement Thursday, Beaumont Police Sgt. Rob Flores said the incident occurred around 5 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of a business on Washington Boulevard.

Witnesses said the man and woman argued before she hit him with her vehicle. She later got out, stabbed him in the leg, then got back in and tried to hit him again with her vehicle.

The woman eventually drove off, but later phoned police. She was identified as 30-year-old Andrea Williams of Beaumont. She told investigators that the man, who hasn't been identified, was the father of her children.

TCU No. 1 in latest computer ranking

Maybe we should have one more game after next week’s national championship to see who plays TCU.

The Horned Frogs, left out of the College Football Playoff, are the No. 1 team in Jeff Sagarin’s latest rankings after their dismantling of Ole Miss. Sagarin’s rankings were included in the old BCS formula that was replaced by this year’s College Football Playoff.

TCU entered the final season ranked third but fell to sixth after beating Iowa State 55-3. Sagarin’s latest rankings were complied after Thursday’s games.

Oregon beat Florida State 59-20 and Ohio State stunned Alabama 42-35 to advance to the first College Football Playoff National Championship Jan. 12 at AT&T Stadium.

Here is his top 10:

1. TCU

2. Ohio State

3. Oregon

4. Alabama

5. Georgia

6. Michigan State

7. Baylor

8. Ole Miss

9. Mississippi State

University of Incarnate Word officer in Cameron Redus shooting resigns, school confirms

SAN ANTONIO — University of the Incarnate Word police officer Cpl. Chris Carter, who shot and killed UIW student Cameron Redus in December of 2013, has resigned, a university spokesperson confirmed Thursday.

Carter submitted his resignation from the University on Dec. 10, four days following the one-year anniversary of Redus' death, said Margaret Garcia, a spokeswoman for the school. Garcia refused to comment further regarding his resignation.

Mark Hall, a Redus family spokesman, said he first heard on Wednesday from media that Carter had resigned, but he says the family has not been contacted by school officials yet.

"I can't say that I'm surprised," Hall said.

Crackpot Utopia: The Year in Republican Crazy, Part 8

Crackpot Utopia: A dream world as envisioned by republicans; a manifestation or expression of the deranged, warped alternate universe inhabited by republicans, at least in their minds. See also: Bachmannism, Boehneresque.

1. Things To Come: Forward Into The Past!

In the last installment of "Crackpot Utopia," I went on about how the 2016 Republican Primary Freak Show has already begun in 2014 with the absolute nuttery of Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, a man who is so highly thought of in republican minds that he is considered presidential material and was once even given the honor of presenting the annual on-air rebuttal to President Obama's State of the Union speech.

Did you think that the last presidential election cycle's republican primary season was the biggest freak show you'd ever seen? Well, it seems that this event gets freakier every time, as many of the old faces, and some new ones, start jockeying for position.

Since it's already begun, I've decided to take the leap and take a guess at what the Crackpot Party and their media allies will be touting as their Ideal Republican Presidential Tickets and Slogans!

-snip- (see the link where the redeeming qualities of each dream ticket are discussed)

·Presidential Dream Ticket #1: Palin-Zimmerman
"Straight-Shootin' Common-Sense Solutions"

·Presidential Dream Ticket #2: Vladimir Putin-Vlad the Impaler
"Bare-Chested Men of Action!"

·Presidential Dream Ticket #3: Cheney-Cheney
"Have a Heart? No, Really, Have a Heart?"

·Presidential Dream Ticket #4: Bush-Bush
"Had Enough?"

·Presidential Dream Ticket #5: Santorum-Mr. Rogers
"It's a Good Day in the Neighborhood!"

·Presidential Dream Ticket #6: Kelly-Hannity
"Santa's white; Jesus is white; anyone that matters is white"

·Presidential Dream Ticket #7: Hannity-Bundy
"Let Me Tell You About the Negro!"

·Presidential Dream Ticket #8: McConnell-Graham
"Let's Dress Up, America!"

·Presidential Dream Ticket #9: Cruz-Perry
"Texas Squared!"

·Presidential Dream Ticket #10: Robertson-Robertson
"Who's on Top?" (this one is interchangeable)

2. Crazyspeak of the Year nominee No. 9: Former republican VP nominee Paul "Crazy Eyes" Ryan, who has his own "Let me tell you about the Negro" moment:

3. Crazyspeak of the Year nominee No. 10: Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association
