Elephants can remember (funny TV commercial)
I've seen this before (possibly in here), but it still made me smile...
The text is something along the lines of: "Think carefully before deciding what to do with your last Rolo".
George Best - A Life in Pictures
http://www.theguardian.com/football/gallery/2015/nov/25/george-best-a-life-in-pictures
Favourite Best quotes:
"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds, and fast cars. The rest I just squandered"
To illustrate the point, Best recounted the story of how he went on a date with the woman who had just won the Miss World contest. They went to the races and won several thousand pounds.
That evening Best and Miss World laid the money out on the bed of their hotel room to count it. At that moment, a hotel waiter knocked on the door to bring them the two bottles of champagne theyd ordered to celebrate.
The waiter, still mindful of Bests early retirement from football, handed over the champagne, looked at the beautiful Miss World, looked at the thousands of pounds and then said to Best: George, where did it all go wrong?
Kraftwerk - Robots (1978)
From the Man Machine album.
I loved this stuff back then while all my friends hated it. I've since acquired a new set of friends.
Some day you'll understand...
A really good friend of mine called me a few hours ago and told me of his terminal cancer diagnosis. He's 60 years old, has three kids, and he's one of the nicest, most decent guys I've ever known -- he'd literally give you the shirt off his back. He also told me that he's credited our conversations with his voting for Obama, Gore, and Clinton, despite his growing up in an extremely conservative household.
He's a self-described Jesus freak, and I sincerely hope his faith helps him through this awful time.
My world is shrinking and I'm finding it difficult to process. Aww Hell, this isn't about me; it's about Dave and his family...
Fuck.

A Walk in the Woods (Bill Bryson, Robert Redford, Nick Nolte)
I tried to revive my old thread on this but I can't do that, apparently (too old?)It'll be opening here tomorrow (it's listed as 'Labor Day Weekend'). Rotten Tomatoes is ambivalent at present, but the trailer makes me want to go see it anyway although we'll probably wait a few days. Did anybody here see it yet?
Here's a documentary about Bill Bryson's early life in Des Moines, IA, made when Thunderbolt Kid came out, presumably:

The Buoys: Give up Your Guns
I woke up with this song in my head.
The BBC refused to play this, but maybe it'll stir a reaction in those of of us who grew up listening to the North Sea pirate stations in the seventies: Radio Veronica, Radio Caroline, Radio Mi Amigo, Radio London, Radio North Sea, et al. A romantic period to be alive in...
