The Charley Project - profiles of over 13,000 "cold case" missing people.

The Charley Project profiles over 13,000 “cold case” missing people mainly from the United States. It does not actively investigate cases; it is merely a publicity vehicle for missing people who are often neglected by the press and forgotten all too soon. A person must have been missing for at least one year to be listed; see the FAQ for additional information on the site, its goals, and its founder/administrator.

This is very interesting: an amazing catalogue of human tragedies, implied or explicit.

The only case I'm personally familiar with is in there: a young woman who disappeared nearly 30 years ago from my workplace. She was declared legally dead 7 years later and her husband was arrested for her murder 3 years after that, despite her body never having been found. He's currently doing essentially life. I don't know what evidence convicted him 10 years after her disappearance without a body, but there seems little doubt that he's guilty.

I remember we formed search parties to look for her car and we did find it, but no trace of the woman herself.

I hadn't thought about that case in a really long time.

Stalker Found Victim's Home By Looking At Reflection In Her Pupil From High-Res Photo

The link is to slashdot, but the original story is from boingboing. Like the slashdotters, I too, immediately thought of the movie Blade Runner. Well, here we are in 2019:

Last month a Japanese entertainer named Ena Matsuoka was attacked in front of her home in Tokyo. Her alleged attacker, an obsessed fan, was able to figure out where she lived by zooming in on a high resolution photo and identifying a bus stop reflected in her pupils. According to Asia One, the alleged attacker "even approximated the storey Matsuoka lived on based on the windows and the angle of the sunlight in her eyes."

ETA: AFAIK, here is the original story link that boingboing links to: https://www.asiaone.com/asia/obsessed-fan-finds-japanese-idols-home-zooming-her-eyes

Theme from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I must've heard this when I watched the movie, but, possibly because the movie didn't do a thing for me, I don't remember it. However, I later heard it used on an episode of This American Life where they discussed the impact of murder on families and I was really moved by it for some reason. Funny how that works.

Mocking suspect's hairstyle could get you prosecuted, [UK] police warn

The picture shows Taylor with a large, bald forehead and two tufts of hair sticking up.

Twitter users joked: "His forehead is bigger than his future," and "that hairline goes further back than Woolworths".

Another quipped: "Looks like his hairline is on the run too."

[snip]

Many users seemed undeterred, however, with one adding: "He was last seen in town - police are combing the area," and another joking: "He's vanished into thin hair.

Anyone else just feel the earthquake?

I happened to be up and it sounded and felt like a massive person/creature running on the roof, shaking the house. Not like any earthquake I ever experienced before. I'm actually relieved that it was an earthquake, as I'd just shut off the security system.

The making of 10cc's "I'm not in love"

Always liked this song, though it's taken some years to re-appreciate it.

About Ron Obvious

I got the nickname Ron Obvious because -- in addition to being a huge Python fan -- my name really is Ron and I used to start sentences with \"Obviously\" a lot. Obviously, that\'s no longer a problem.
