Tx Republican State Rep's Chief of Staff Tony McDonald Demonstrates History of Racism and Homophobia

Source: Burnt Orange Report

Through his years of statements and actions, Tony McDonald has promoted the worst kind of racist and homophobic viewpoints. Does such a person have any business working in the Texas Capitol?

On November 6, 2008, Tony wrote in a blog post entitled "Sodomites Expose Themselves" that:

"Homosexuals" love to compalin about how they are an opressed group, who just wants peace and tolerance, and love, and ranbows ... The reality is that they have a sickness, and that it corrupts their moral beings. This manifests its self not only in their horribly self-destructive tendencies, but certainly carries out into their view of others as well. The worst thing we can do for them, if we care at all about their well-being or the well being of our society is to encourage their destructive, depraved, and deadly behavior. By doing so we only encourage them to destroy themselves, and to continue on trying to destroy the society around them.

Oil's Not So Well In America's Saddest City: Beaumont, Texas

http://www.burntorangereport.com/diary/13143/oils-not-so-well-in-americas-saddest-city-beaumont-texas

Back in 2008 Beaumont was listed as the 2nd worst city in America to raise a family. Low marks were given because of "long standing air quality challenges", so quite literally there's just something in the air. Now Beaumont has been ranked by University of Vermont researchers, using data from Twitter, as the saddest city in America followed closely by its neighbor Port Arthur.

As a Beaumont native this does not surprise me. About 10 miles before you reach the city, you can see the amber glow of the refineries, and thats when the smell hits your nose...

Bill White Leads Rick Perry: Poll Shows Need for Strong Texas Democrat in 2014

Source: Burnt Orange Report

For the first time in over a decade, a Democrat leads a Republican statewide in a public opinion poll. Sure, it's within the margin of error. And sure, we aren't close to an election and Republicans poll better as we get closer. And sure, the polls that truly matter (in November) show that Texas actually has a very long way to go before electing a Democrat.
But a scientific survey of Texans has a Democrat winning the state.

Missing the Mark: Texas Lawmakers Stick To Their Guns, Obama Considers Executive Action

Source: Burnt Orange Report

A new poll by Gallup shows attitudes about gun regulations have warmed since the tragedies of Sandy Hook and Aurora but there is no evidence to suggest it will be sustained. If history serves Vice President Joe Biden has a limited time frame to lead the administration's task of substantive changes, including an assault weapons ban, to the countries laws regarding gun safety. According to Gallup, "they [Americans] are clearly more open to further restricting the sale of guns, including with more background checks and bans on high-capacity magazines." Gallup also concludes Americans are not willing to budge on handgun ownership even though they make up the bulk of casualties.

The debate so far has given more ammo to Texas lawmakers who have made a career of fighting the federal government. Tuesday a Freshman Steve Toth (R-Woodlands) said he would file a "Firearm Protection Act" to prevent Obama's 19 possible executive orders from being enforced adding "It is our responsibility to push back when those laws are infringed by King Obama,"...

Former Travis County Candidate Auctions Bushmaster AR 15 For Child's Medical Expenses

Source: Burnt Orange Report

Former candidate for Travis County Constable Michael Cargill is also the owner of Central Texas Gun Works in South Austin. While the City of Austin and Travis County are working to curb gun shows within their jurisdiction, Cargill will, this Sunday, auction off a Bushmaster AR 15 to raise money for an employee's daughter who has Atrial Septal Defect. The weapon is the one used by the shooter at Sandy Hook and even though the company that owns the manufacturer has put its shares up for sale the gun has been flying off the shelves since renewed talks of an assault weapons ban....

Texas Budget Unexpectedly Large But Conservative Legislature May Not Spend...

http://www.burntorangereport.com/diary/13011/does-the-texas-budget-reflect-texas-values

Hours after this post the Comptroller released the Revenue Estimate for the 2014-15 biennium as $208 billion with the Rainy Day Fund at $11.8 billion.

Texas is expected to have $8.5 billion more than the Comptroller estimated last year for the 2014-15 biennium, but it doesn't mean that hardline conservatives in the Texas legislature are eager to spend it. During the interim Texas state-level politicians are quick to talk about the explosion of economic growth but get weak-kneed during session when discussing how that growth is increasing the demands of key budget drivers like public education, health and human services, transportation and water infrastructure...

Rep. Deshotel Challenges Gov. Perry To Drug Test Elected Officials Not Just Needy Texans

Source: Burnt Orange Report

Today State Rep. Joe Deshotel (D-Beaumont) expressed his dismay that our state leaders would continue to propose laws that harass Texans who are struggling the most. He suggested that elected officials be drug tested to prove tax dollars aren't going to "drug abusers", but why stop there?...

Turning Texas Blue: A Process Not An Event

Last Tuesday's results show that Republicans have a lot of soul-searching to do about the future viability of their party, but the same could be said about Texas Democrats. After conceding there was much work left to be done, Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said by 2018 Texas would become battleground state, "by itself." I strongly disagree, I expect national pundits and observers to casually assume demographics alone will make our state competitive but our past says something much different. Almost 50 years ago Lyndon Johnson said he signed away the South (to the Republicans) for a generation with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and still more than a generation later identity politics dominate the conversation. As the Party colors change from Red and Blue to White and Brown the demographic scapegoating of Hispanics could also potentially alienate middle-class white voters. The subtle nods to white voters that the Democratic Party was some how hostile towards them started immediately after President Obama's election was announced...
