In my book Zero-Sum Future, written in 2009, I attempted to predict how the global economic crisis would change international politics. As the rather bleak title implied, I argued that relations between the major powers were likely to become increasingly tense and conflict-ridden. In a worsening economic climate, it would be harder for the big economies to see their relationships as mutually beneficial -- as a win-win. Instead, they would increasingly judge their relationships in zero-sum terms. What was good for China would be seen as bad for America. What was good for Germany would be bad for Italy, Spain, and Greece.

Now, as the paperback edition of my book comes out, the prediction is being borne out -- which is gratifying as an author, although slightly worrying as a member of the human race. The rise of zero-sum logic is the common thread, tying together seemingly disparate strands in international politics: the crisis inside the European Union, deteriorating U.S.-Chinese relations, and the deadlock in global governance.

This new, more troubled mood is reflected at this year's World Economic Forum. In the 20 years before the financial crisis, Davos was almost a festival of globalization -- as political leaders from all over the world bought into the same ideas about the mutual benefits of trade and investment and wooed the same investment bankers and multinational executives. At Davos, this year, the mood is more questioning -- with numerous sessions on rethinking capitalism and on the crisis in the eurozone. The European Union is an organization built around a win-win economic logic. Europe's founding fathers believed that the nations of Europe could put centuries of conflict behind them by concentrating on mutually beneficial economic cooperation. By building a common market and tearing down barriers to trade and investment, they would all become richer -- and, eventually, would get used to working together. Good economics would make good politics. The nations of Europe would grow together.

Is it possible for Occupy to bankrupt a city's police department?

How many people can any city's police department hope to detain? How much does one average jury trial cost?

We need to kill the funding for the police gangs in every city where they arrest Occupy activists. Drive them to the breaking point. Is this possible?

Australian politicians just don't get the irony of this, do they?

The indigenous people of Australia died by the droves as a result of colonialism. Now the cops there are mad because the indigenous people get rowdy in defense of their rights?

Just think about the future:

Your employer could demand to see what you're doing in your off time. Failure to prove that you are engaged in "optimal" activities could trigger an automatic dismissal. And under "at will" law it would be legal. And if that isn't legal today it can be made legal tomorrow with the application of a few campaign contribution bucks.

*tire screech* Wait, WHAT? Ok I know Chicken McNuggets can be bad for you, BUT...

Why, in 2009, when the Tea Party was holding their giant rallies against Obama's health care plan, did liberals not show up in equal force?

Aren't there millions of us? Why didn't we show up?

Why did we wait until 2011 to start protesting in Wisconsin and Zucotti park?

Could the new Marlins ballpark or the Tampa Bay Rays' Tropicana Field serve as a homeless shelter for the 270 or so nights a year that they're not used for baseball?

If two Florida lawmakers have their way, they might. As reported by the Miami Herald, state legislators have unearthed an obscure law that has not been enforced since it was adopted in 1988. It states that any ballpark or stadium that receives taxpayer money shall serve as a homeless shelter on the dates that it is not in use.

Now, a new bill would punish owners of teams who play in publicly funded stadiums if they don't provide a haven for the homeless. Affected ballparks would include the Miami Marlins' new ballpark in Miami's Little Havana, the Tampa Bay Rays' Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg and several spring training facilities. It also includes the homes of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Miami Heat, Jacksonville Jaguars and Florida Panthers.

Americans, you should be happy to lose your job to help the third world. (Satire!)

How DARE we Americans try to keep our jobs and put our jobless back to work when there are people in China and India who need to make a better life?

If you've lost your job you should be overwhelmed with joy that you helped make someone in China earn better than $1.50 an hour. You may earn $0 an hour as a result but that's what dumpster diving cuisine is for! Behold the great American wealth of half-eaten apples and rotting chicken in the trash cans outside in the freezing Michigan cold! When you bite down into that half-moon of a discarded cheeseburger, remember that's worth more than someone in India makes in an hour!

Out of work Americans, stop being selfish! Would you rather be huddling by a trash can fire, waiting for the cops to come and drive you off, or would you rather deprive someone in Mexico of a living?

As you shiver in the winter cold and listen to listen to your kids complain about being hungry, it can be tempting to give into the racism and xenophobia of wanting to find work again in America. Instead rejoice in the sacrifices you are making to help the poor in other nations.

Be a good citizen of the world. Tell your hungry kids that their pain is the third world's gain.
