Wisconsin teacher removed for essay defending Ku Klux Klan

Wisconsin teacher removed for essay defending Ku Klux Klan

The teacher, who is African-American, emphasised the goal was to teach seventh-graders to write persuasively.

The school withdrew the assignment, adding it believed there was no malicious intent involved.

<snip>.

"This paper will be a persuasive paper defending Klan members on trial," said the assignment for the students, who are between 12-14 years old. They had recently watched To Kill a Mockingbird.

The teacher noted that it was not meant to "teach the students the Klan was correct in their behaviour, but rather to teach the students to write persuasively", according to the school's statement.

BEAM - which, like other charter schools, is supported by public money, but operates outside the local state school system - has removed the teacher while it conducts an investigation into the incident.

"BEAM feels that the objective of teaching students how to write persuasively is important," the school said in a statement on its website.

"However, we feel that the choice of topic is inappropriate for a 7th grade class. A new topic will be selected for the assignment."

Writing pro-choice and anti-capital punishment arguments in high school is how I changed my own mind to those positions. Writing gun control positions is how I changed my mind in college.

I get what she was trying to do. But I think this was the wrong thing to do in this situation.

Currently, Arkansas is represented in the National Statuary Hall by two statues: Civil War-era attorney Uriah Milton Rose and James Paul Clarke, who was both a governor and U.S. senator in the post-Reconstruction era.

While Rose opposed secession, he sided with the Confederacy when Arkansas split from the Union, Roll Call reported. And Clarke had a legacy of racist views, vowing to “preserve the white standards of civilization” while running for governor in 1894.

“Most everyone who was involved in the discussion agreed we needed to update the statues with representatives of our more recent history,” Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson said in his weekly radio address.

“If I could pick any two, those would probably be the two,” former state Rep. Clarke Tucker (D) told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. “Johnny Cash is my favorite musician of all time. He’s had a pretty significant impact on my life through his music. And I’m a Central High grad and I absolutely worship the Little Rock Nine and Daisy Bates.”

Bates, who died in 1999, served as a mentor to the Little Rock Nine, the first black students to enroll at the previously all-white Little Rock Central High School. An angry mob protested their arrival and blocked them from entering for weeks in 1957. She was also a pioneering African-American newspaper publisher who fought for civil rights and served as the head of the state’s NAACP chapter.

“It looks like the state of Arkansas is shining down on one of its darling daughters today,” Bates’ goddaughter, Jan Brown, told the Democrat-Gazette. “To have her being recognized by millions of people all over the world, this is something that will resonate and will help improve our state.”

White Supremacist Gets Life In Prison For Running Down Black Teen

White Supremacist Gets Life In Prison For Running Down Black Teen

Russell Courtier was found guilty of murdering 19-year-old Larnell Bruce in August 2016.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A white supremacist who ran down and killed a young black man in Oregon two years ago was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 28 years.

<snip>

Prosecutors argued Courtier was motivated by his white supremacist beliefs — saying he was a member of the European Kindred white supremacist prison gang and was wearing the gang’s logo on his baseball cap and had its tattoo on his leg when he encountered Bruce.

Surveillance video showed Bruce standing outside the store when Courtier drove up and parked. A fight erupted, but it was not clear how it started, said prosecutor David Hannon.

<snip>

Bruce’s mother, Christina Miles, told Courtier in court that “you allowed the devil to misguide you and take the life of such a beautiful young spirit.”

Larnell Bruce Sr., the victim’s father, said he hopes Courtier spends his time in prison thinking about whether he wants his own son, who is 8, to grow up among white supremacists.

“That ideology that you have is not good for anybody,” Bruce said.

White Man Gets 10 Years in Prison for Trying to Hire Hit Man to Lynch Black Neighbor

White Man Gets 10 Years in Prison for Trying to Hire Hit Man to Lynch Black Neighbor

By Sandra E. Garcia

April 15, 2019

A white man in South Carolina has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to trying to hire a hit man to kill his black neighbor, hang him from a tree and leave a burning cross in his yard, prosecutors said.

<snip>

An F.B.I. agent posing as a hit man contacted Mr. Lecroy, who told the agent over the phone, “$500 and he’s a ghost,” according to an arrest warrant affidavit. After giving the agent an initial payment of $100, he was taken into custody.

<snip>

Mr. Lecroy went as far as texting the agent photos of two targets, including the neighbor, whom the authorities have not identified. He also provided times when it would have been best to commit the murder.

Mr. Lecroy said he planned to take over his neighbor’s property, according to an affidavit in the United States District Court in South Carolina. He also asked the agent for a “ghost gun,” or an untraceable 9-millimeter gun that had not been stolen, according to court documents. What Mr. Lecroy planned to do with the “ghost gun” was not disclosed.

After initially pleading not guilty, Mr. Lecroy withdrew his plea and pleaded guilty to one count of murder for hire.

Michele Bachmann Hails ‘Godly’ Trump: We’ll Never See A More Biblical President

“So we need to be not only praying for him, we need to support him, in my opinion, in every possible way that we can.”

“He is highly biblical, and I would say to your listeners, we will in all likelihood never see a more godly, biblical president again in our lifetime. So we need to be not only praying for him, we need to support him, in my opinion, in every possible way that we can.”

Bachmann, who has served as one of Trump’s evangelical advisors, said she prayed to expose the “deep state,” a right-wing conspiracy theory that claims there are people in the government undermining Trump, Right Wing Watch reported. She also claimed these shadowy figures were working to “advance cultural and economic Marxism or to advance the goals of Islamic jihad, for instance.”

Given Trump’s less-than-Christian leanings and often-tenuous grasp of the Bible, Twitter critics were quick to question Bachmann:
