Source: KSTP- ABC affiliate

The Minnesota National Guard is being called on to help contain protests in the Twin Cities after a violent past two days after George Floyd's death.

Gov. Tim Walz signed Executive Order 20-65 on Thursday, activating the Guard to help protect Minnesotans and maintain peace. A release from Walz's office says local leaders have requested National Guard resources after extensive damage during protests the past two days.

The National Guard Adjutant General will work with local government agencies to provide personnel, equipment, and facilities needed to respond to and recover from this emergency, according to the news release.

About 200 Minnesota State Patrol troopers will also assist in public safety efforts over the next several days.

VIDEO: Chopper 5 shows police presence at St. Paul Target, surrounding area

Dozens of people tried to loot the Midway Target in St. Paul Thursday.

According to St. Paul Police, a group of 50 to 60 people tried to overwhelm the store's staff. However, police arrived and confronted the group, and the people then dropped the items they'd grabbed and fled.

Immediately afterward, a fight broke out in the store's parking lot, and a person was nearly run over by a vehicle. Despite that, police said no injuries were reported.

The group also attempted to go into nearby small businesses but were stopped by police.

Minneapolis small-business owners pick up the pieces after night of rage, destruction

Minneapolis small-business owners pick up the pieces after night of rage, destruction

Shattered glass, broken golf clubs and trash littered East Lake Street on Thursday morning after the destructive standoff between protesters and police, with some breaking into and setting fire to stores.

Many of these businesses, including fast-food restaurants, auto shops and banks, were ransacked by Thursday morning. The brick foundation of a Metro PCS store, the only part that remained, continued to burn as the crews dug a line in front to prevent a gas leak.

Smoke billowed from the shopping complex near Lake Street and Hiawatha Avenue, the burning smell wafting over across Lake Street. A Wendy’s restaurant smoldered; so did a building behind it, no longer recognizable.

The owners of small businesses on Lake Street, some of whom have been there for decades, emerged early Thursday morning to assess the damage. They stared out at what was left of their shops and the street with quiet disbelief.

Protests continued into Wednesday night in south Minneapolis, where Chopper 5 captured video of apparent looting at a nearby Target and other area businesses. Fires have sprung up around the area as well.

Gov. Tim Walz tweeted late Wednesday night, calling the situation near Lake Street and Hiawatha Avenue an "extremely dangerous situation."

The situation near Lake Street and Hiawatha in Minneapolis has evolved into an extremely dangerous situation. For everyone's safety, please leave the area and allow firefighters and paramedics to get to the scene.

— Governor Tim Walz (@GovTimWalz) May 28, 2020
The protests are happening in response to the death of George Floyd, who was killed Monday night after an incident that involved Minneapolis Police officers. All four officers involved in the arrest were fired on Tuesday.

No further details on if/when the Guard may be sent to Minneapolis, at this time.

Earlier some posters asked for the National Guard be called into Minneapolis because of the police. It may turn into a case of be careful what you wish for...

There will be no Great Get Together

A message from Minnesota State Fair General Manager Jerry Hammer:

“Dear Friends,

We’ve been working hard and doing our very best with preparations for the 2020 State Fair. The picture was cloudy in March, but things have cleared up considerably since then. Right now is the time of year when things need to really take off if we’re going to have a fair, but we can see that we’re out of runway and can’t get off the ground. There will be no State Fair this year.

Like everything during the past few months, it’s complex and difficult. The State Fair is built on a vast network of agriculturists, vendors, artists, entertainers, competitors, amusement operators, sponsors, State Fair staff and thousands more who always give their very best. They are the pillars of the fair, and almost all have been affected during the past two months. Some are doing okay, but many have eroded including some who provide our biggest and best programs. It’s a challenging time for our determined young people in youth agriculture programs. More and more livestock exhibitors, entertainers and attraction operators are concerned with going on the road this summer. Some commercial exhibitors are past their deadlines for getting products, and now there’s even a question of adequate supplies for food vendors. And many are having trouble finding people who are willing to work in crowds.

This will have a big impact on thousands of businesses and the tens of thousands of people whose talent, dedication and love bring the fair to life. We understand exactly what they’re going through because we’re going through the same thing.

We’ll face those challenges because the most important thing is your health. No one knows what things will be like at fair time, but we need to make decisions now based on what we know today, not how we hope things will be in August. And right now, all of the science says that if things go well, we’ll still be walking very carefully in three months. That’s far from ready to run a mass gathering marathon like the State Fair. Can you see social distancing on a Park & Ride bus, or at the Bandshell? One at a time on the Giant Slide? Can you imagine standing six feet apart in line for cookies? Me neither.

The State Fair needs to be a full-on celebration. That’s what makes it very special for so many of us, including young fair fan Addie who is 5 years old. She starts kindergarten this fall and she said, “I love the fair. There are a hundred things to do there. And it’s my birthday. It’s my favorite time of year.”

Millions of people love the fair just like Addie, even if it’s not their birthday. And that’s exactly why we can’t have a fair this year. We owe it to you now, and we owe it to posterity to give you the very best that we possibly can in a safe environment. By taking the tough road today, we guarantee that the fair’s future remains hopeful and bright.

A month ago, my good friend Carlos wrote, “If there’s no fair this year, it’s because they love us and want to see EVERYone next year.” He’s right. That’s the heart of the matter. We want to see you all for many years to come, when we can celebrate in true State Fair style.

So this isn’t a difficult decision. It’s the only decision. It’s the right thing to do. As we go through this strange summer, we’re extremely grateful for the understanding and support of everyone who makes the State Fair possible – especially the millions of fair fans from around the globe. The best thing we can all do right now is to help the world recover and heal. In the meantime, your team of State Fair pros is working hard to come back bigger, better, stronger and smarter in ‘21. We’ll see you next year at the Great Minnesota Get-Back-Together.”

Unfortunately I have to agree, there is no other choice. But I will miss the cookies and corn and footlong and deep fried candy bars and.......

Arrest warrants issued for 2 NFL players accused of armed robbery in Florida

Arrest warrants issued for 2 NFL players accused of armed robbery in Florida

The police department in Miramar, Florida, issued arrest warrants for two NFL cornerbacks accused of an armed robbery that allegedly occurred on Wednesday.

DeAndre Baker, of the New York Giants, and Quinton Dunbar, of the Seattle Seahawks, are wanted on four counts each of armed robbery with a firearm, according to the Miramar Police Department Thursday. Baker is additionally wanted on four counts of aggravated assault.

The two men were at a party in Miramar on Wednesday evening when Baker allegedly instructed two men to “take money and valuables” from other people at the party, according to a warrant issued Thursday. Dunbar was allegedly assisting Baker, based on statements from four victims and a witness to police. The names of the victims were redacted in the warrant.

Baker was allegedly involved in an argument at a card table along with someone identified as "Shy," the warrant said. The two allegedly brandished their guns in one of the victims face after flipping the card table over.

Teen kicks elderly woman in the face on St. Paul light rail platform

Video: Teen kicks elderly woman in the face on St. Paul light rail platform

A teenager is in custody Wednesday night after a disturbing video showed someone kicking an elderly woman in the head.

An older Asian-American woman was standing alone at a light rail platform and was taunted by two teens. Then, she was kicked in the face by one of them before the teens turned and ran away.

“To say this is uncalled for is such a huge understatement,” said Metro Transit spokesperson Howie Padilla. “It really is.”

Metro Transit says it started getting calls about the assault Tuesday after the video was posted on social media.

Pence: 'I should have worn a mask at the Mayo Clinic'

Pence: 'I should have worn a mask at the Mayo Clinic'

Vice President Mike Pence now says he should have worn a mask during his visit to Mayo Clinic last week.

Pence chose not to wear a face mask during a tour of the facility in Rochester, Minnesota, an apparent violation of the world-renowned medical center’s policy requiring them.

During a Fox News town hall Sunday, Pence said, "I didn't think it was necessary, but I should have worn a mask at the Mayo Clinic."

Pence said he and the president typically don't wear masks, as they've both tested negative for COVID-19.

Yes, you should have worn one instead of being an arrogant asshole. Also your wife should apologize for lying about you not knowing the protocol.

Updated: Democrats to postpone convention amid COVID-19 concerns

AP source: Democrats to postpone convention amid COVID-19 concerns

The Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is expected to be postponed due to rising COVID-19 concerns.

The convention will be moved to the week of Aug. 17, according to a release from the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC).

The event was previously scheduled to take place July 13-16.

"In our current climate of uncertainty, we believe the smartest approach is to take additional time to monitor how this situation unfolds so we can best position our party for a safe and successful convention," Joe Solmonese, CEO of the DNCC, said in a statement. "During this critical time, when the scope and scale of the pandemic and its impact remain unknown, we will continue to monitor the situation and follow the advice of health care professionals and emergency responders."
