California high school stripped of basketball title after tortillas were thrown at opposing Latino

California high school stripped of basketball title after tortillas were thrown at opposing Latino players

A mostly white high school basketball team in Southern California has been stripped of its regional title after tortillas were thrown at a predominately Latino opposing team following a championship game last month, officials announced Wednesday.

"After a thorough review and analysis of the incident following the conclusion of the Division 4-A regional basketball championship game between Coronado High School and Orange Glen High School, the (California Interscholastic Federation) state executive director reiterates that discriminatory and racially insensitive behaviors toward an opponent contravene the principles of education-based athletics," the federation said in a news release.

Based on investigations of the incident, "The 2021 Southern California Boys Basketball Division 4-A Regional Championship is vacated," the release states.

On June 19, Orange Glen High School's predominantly Latino team lost the championship game to largely white Coronado High School.

Tour de France drops lawsuit against fan who caused massive crash

Tour de France drops lawsuit against fan who caused massive crash

A 30-year-old French woman who caused a wreck during the first stage of the Tour de France is out of hot water legally after race organizers dropped a lawsuit on Thursday.

The woman held up cardboard sign during Saturday's Stage 1 and was not watching the competitors when German rider Tony Martin rode into the sign, causing a massive pileup. Nearly two dozen people were injured including some riders who had to withdraw from the tour.

"We are withdrawing our complaint," Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme said, according to Reuters. "This story has been blown out of proportion, but we wish to remind everyone of the safety rules on the race.

"If you come to the Tour, you hold your kid, you hold your pet and don't cross the road carelessly. And above all, you respect the riders -- they're the ones worthy of live TV."

Pretty much as I expected. The incident created much awareness of the danger of being too close to the riders. There would be little gained in in seeking a harsh punishment for an unintentional, albeit idiotic, action of a spectator.

Minneapolis City Council Vice President Andrea Jenkins reacts after claiming she was 'held hostage'

Minneapolis City Council Vice President Andrea Jenkins reacts after claiming she was 'held hostage' by activists

Minneapolis City Council Vice President Andrea Jenkins released a statement after an incident over the weekend where activists surrounded a vehicle she was riding in and didn't allow the vehicle drive away until she signed a document filled with multiple demands.

One of the activists, Donald Hooker Jr., posted video on his Facebook account showing the activists blocking the vehicle, which Jenkins is seen riding in the passenger seat.

In her statement, Jenkins claimed she was verbally attacked and "held 'hostage' against my will."

Her full statement reads:

Black pain, Black trauma, Black anger is real and justified. What is not justified is the inhumane treatment of other humans because they hold elective office. On Sunday afternoon, while attending a Pride event in Loring Park, something I’ve done on the last weekend in June for the past 20 plus years, I was verbally attacked, berated and held “hostage” against my will by a large group of angry protesters.

Derek Chauvin Closing In On Federal Plea Deal, Sources Tell WCCO

Derek Chauvin Closing In On Federal Plea Deal, Sources Tell WCCO

Multiple sources tell WCCO that federal prosecutors are in talks with former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin about a possible plea deal. They say Chauvin is close to reaching a deal, and that is what he was likely referring to when he made a cryptic comment to the family of George Floyd during his sentencing last week.

“Due to legal matters, I’m not able to give a full formal statement … I give my condolences to the Floyd family, there’s gonna be some other information in the future that will be of interest and I hope these will give you some peace of mind,” Chauvin said prior to his sentencing.

Sources suggest Chauvin was likely referring to a plea deal in the federal case against him. As part of a possible plea deal Chauvin would have to publicly explain what he did to Floyd and why.

That was, of course, the question that Floyd’s brother poignantly asked of Chauvin at the sentencing.

Any bets the deal he is seeking is about 22.5 years in a Federal prison far from Minnesota?

Gun sales rise among Black people as they look for firearm training and education

Gun sales rise among Black people as they look for firearm training and education

Deborah Roberts grew up in a family of gun owners. But it wasn't until March this year that the 68-year-old finally pulled the trigger and purchased her own firearm.

"I think the rhetoric and how things are stirred up in the country just made me feel like, if not now, then when?" Roberts told CNN on Sunday morning at the South River Gun Club in Covington with gun shots ringing nearby.

It was Ladies Day at the range, an event put on by the National African American Gun Association's Atlanta chapter. More than a dozen women, some for the first time, came out to work on their shooting and learn about firearm safety -- and to have fun doing it.

All but one of them is African American.

They're not alone: Amid a recent nationwide surge in gun sales, these women are part of the growing coalition of gun owners that is increasingly made up of people of color, experts say.

Cross posted from GD-
It has been often said that we would quickly get gun control if more black people started buying guns. It appears that is in process.

Will Republicans start changing their position on gun control?

Will more women and minorities buying guns affect the way Democratic candidates approach gun control?

Also this runs contrary to the dogma that all new gun purchases are being made by conservative white males who already own many guns. Should gun control groups consider that 'what everyone knows is true' may not, in reality, be true?

Most major metropolitan areas have become more racially segregated, study shows

Most major metropolitan areas have become more racially segregated, study shows

Some of the nation's largest metropolitan regions have become increasingly segregated in the last 30 years, underscoring racial inequalities that have led to poorer life outcomes in Black and brown neighborhoods, according to a study released Monday by the University of California Berkeley's Othering & Belonging Institute.

The study found that 81% of regions with more than 200,000 residents were more segregated in 2019 than they were in 1990, despite fair housing laws and policies created to promote integration.

Some of the most segregated areas included Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit in the Midwest and New York, Northern New Jersey and Philadelphia in the mid-Atlantic.
Conversely, large metropolitan regions that saw the biggest decrease in segregation included Savannah, Georgia, San Antonio and Miami.

According to the study, segregated communities of color have lower incomes, higher unemployment, lower home values and are less educated than segregated White communities. However, the report indicates that Blacks and Hispanics who grew up in segregated White communities were able to earn significantly higher incomes than those in communities in color.

Body parts found in northeast Minneapolis, authorities investigating

Body parts found in northeast Minneapolis, authorities investigating

Authorities are investigating after human body parts were found in northeast Minneapolis Thursday morning.

Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder confirmed during a news conference the body parts appear to be those of a white man in his 30s.

"We don't know the origin of the body. We don't know the identity of the body," Elder said. He noted investigators are still trying to sort through everything to come to those conclusions.

Elder said authorities were in the area of Northeast Main Street and Third Avenue Northeast and called the discovery "disturbing." Additional parts were later found in the area of Third Avenue Northeast and University Avenue, Elder said.

Victoria's Secret abandons its scantily dressed Angels, saying they're no longer 'culturally relevan

Victoria's Secret abandons its scantily dressed Angels, saying they're no longer 'culturally relevant.' Activists and entrepreneurs will be the new faces of the brand, it says.

Victoria's Secret is abandoning its Angels.

The lingerie giant said on Wednesday that it was partnering with a group of inspirational women including activists and entrepreneurs to promote a new brand image and shape its turnaround.

These women, who include the Indian actor and entrepreneur Priyanka Chopra Jonas and the pro soccer player and gender-equality activist Megan Rapinoe, will become the face and voice of the brand, Victoria's Secret said.

Victoria's Secret's Angels have been synonymous with the brand since the late 1990s. These women, who have included some of the world's most famous models over the years - Gisele Bündchen, Tyra Banks, and Heidi Klum, to name a few - were the face of Victoria's Secret through its marketing campaigns and annual runway shows.

How are teenage boys supposed to get through puberty now?

I once read an interview with one of the women who described what she put herself through to get ready for a show. She started reducing what she ate three weeks ahead until the week before when she ate no solid food. Three days before she would only drink water and not even that in the last 24 hours. Post show they would all binge as they were nearly delirious from starvation and dehydration.

Walz: National Guard on 'standby' in event Minneapolis unrest persists

Walz: National Guard on 'standby' in event Minneapolis unrest persists

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has told the Minnesota National Guard to be on standby in the event local law enforcement needs assistance if unrest persists.

According to the governor's office, the request for the Guard was made by the city of Minneapolis. However, no operational orders have been given.

Recent unrest in the Uptown neighborhood has resulted in this decision.

Three people were arrested Tuesday night and 27 others were cited.

Protesters have recently set up road blocks in Uptown that have since been taken down by the Minneapolis Police Department. Authorities determined that the protest held Tuesday was unlawful when demonstrators began to block the street and placed makeshift barricades in the area.
