How Did We Come To “Unknow” What We Already Knew In 1981?

PROOF: The Right’s Denial of Climate Change is a LIE.

-snip-

The Energy Task Force report to Ronald Reagan in May 1981:

“Given the magnitude of the potential threat represented by global climate change, it is equally in the strategic interest of the United States to identify and implement cost-effective measures at home and abroad to stabilize the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gasses at levels that will not lead to catastrophic climatic change.”

It goes on to say:

“Many different constituencies within the U.S. government will need to work together to develop a unified and integrated energy policy framework with well-defined and orchestrated goals—a policy that addresses not only today’s energy bottlenecks, but also will seek to provide affordable, clean, and reliable energy supplies five to fifteen years into the future, in order to underpin long-term economic growth in an environmentally acceptable manner and to promote the security of the United States, and its allies”

So just to review, this republican task force sponsored by the James Baker Institute and the Foreign Affairs Councilfrom 1981 said they knew and understood that we had a serious problem.

At the time, they said it would take 5 to 15 years to provide alternatives, which would, in their words, promote the security of the United States. That should have meant we would have made the transition by 1986 at latest.

Republican trying to prove how it easy it is to commit voter fraud gets arrested for voter fraud.

A Nevada Republican arrested for voter fraud in the 2012 election, after claiming she was trying to test the system's integrity, pled guilty and accepted a plea deal Thursday, forcing her to pay almost $2,500 and promise to stay out of trouble.

Roxanne Rubin, 56, a casino worker on the Las Vegas Strip, was arrested on Nov. 3, 2012 after trying to vote twice, once at her poling site in Henderson and then at a second site in Las Vegas. The poll workers at the second site said that she had already voted, but Rubin said that she hadn't and insisted on casting a ballot, which the poll workers refused to allow her to do.

Rubin said that she was trying to show how easy it would be to commit voter fraud with just a signature. "This has always been an issue with me. I just feel the system is flawed," she told the AP Thursday. "If we’re showing ID for everything else, why wouldn’t we show our ID in order to vote?”

Rubin, like many Republicans, claim that the threat from voter fraud -- which is close to non-existent -- is why voter ID laws need to be in place. But Nevada has no voter ID law -- other than for first-time voters who didn't show ID when they registered to vote -- and she was caught anyway.

Once GOP stronghold, West veers into Dems' column.

DENVER (AP) — A political generation ago, the West signaled the nation's rightward swing, from the emergence of Ronald Reagan to the success of tax-limitation ballot measures in California and Colorado.

Now, however, the fabled expanse of deserts, jagged peaks, and emerald coastlines is trending in a different direction.
The West has become largely Democratic terrain.

Voters in Washington state in November legalized marijuana and upheld the legality of gay marriage. New Mexico was once a tightly contested state, but Republicans ceded it to Democrats in the presidential campaign.

-snip-

Still, the overall trend is clear, according to analysts on all sides of the political spectrum.

"It's just a different world," said Bill Carrick, a Democratic strategist in Los Angeles who has worked widely in the region. "Nevada became the next California and now Arizona looks like it will become the next Nevada. ... It's just pushing the West further and further from Republicans."

What insane gun culture?

Daughter's grades too low, dad pulls AK-47, charges say.

A St. Paul man threatened his daughter with an AK-47 rifle because she was getting two B's in school rather than straight A's, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday.

Kirill Bartashevitch, 51, was charged in Ramsey County District Court with two felony counts of terroristic threats after alleging pointing the gun at his daughter, 15, and his wife during an argument at their house on Jan. 17.

The incident came to light at Central High School when a social worker received a report from a parent who said she had been monitoring her son's electronic communications when she saw a message from the girl.

Bartashevitch had recently purchased the rifle out of fear that such guns soon will be banned, the complaint said.

I Can't Take The Anti-Choice Crowd Serious EVER, Not With Their Sheer Hypocrisy.

You can't call yourself 'pro-life' if all you ever do is try to cut food-aid to families, cut healthcare access to families, execute inmates, send kids to war, advocate for more guns in society, cut Social Security, cut Medicare, etc., the list goes on & on. Those are 'pro-death' policies.

Also, if you truly do consider yourself 'pro-life', how can one make exceptions in cases of rape or incest, I mean, if you truly believe that all life is precious then you must have no problem with forcing women & girls (sometimes very young) into carrying their rapists or incestual fetus to full-term, which is absurd & horrifying, both physically & mentally. Imagine an 11 year old girl being forced to give birth to her rapists baby, or any woman of any age having to do so. If she chooses to do so, then that's her CHOICE.

And another point, this on the rightwing's notion of "small govt". If abortion were outlawed, banned, made illegal, what exactly would the penalty be for woman who still go through with the procedure, albeit illegally? Is the rightwing advocating we start throwing masses of women in jail for making a personal health choice & bodily decision? Wouldn't that destroy the woman's career or possibly existing family, marriage, & life in general? Some "small govt".

Wouldn't making abortion illegal also give the press the right to publish the "criminals" names, photos & possibly home addresses? Is the rightwing's goal to shame women into making a choice they may not be ready for, both financially & emotionally, or even personally? We all know motherhood is extremely difficult, some even say "it's the most difficult job in the world", so why would we thrust the "most difficult job in the world" upon women who have no desire for it? Or young teens for that matter?

Here's what the rightwing doesn't get: One can be 'pro-life' & also be pro-choice. They can choose to teach THEIR children or family members THEIR own personal beliefs while acknowledging the importance of keeping choice legal & safe for others.

No one is infringing on their right to be personally anti-choice, yet they consistently try to infringe on others rights to be personally pro-choice. Here's an idea for the anti-choice crowd and the only principle they should adhere to when it comes to this issue: Mind Your Own Fucking Business.

HYPOCRISY.

Matt Taibbi - Conservatives Have Their Worst Week Ever

Have Republicans, and the right wing in general, ever been more disjointed? More confused? More incapable of getting out of their own way?

Watching America's political conservatives try to counter-maneuver opposite Barack Obama's re-inauguration over the course of the last week has been an incredible comedy – like watching the Three Stooges try to perform a liver transplant on roller skates.

Let's review the basic timeline. First, Political Media, a conservative action group, decided to try to make an appeal to win the hearts and minds of Americans everywhere by declaring January 19th – previously known as Martin Luther King Day, to the rest of us – to be "Gun Appreciation Day."

They solicited hundreds of sponsors and sought to get 50 million people to sign a goofball petition (written in the style of the Declaration of Independence, with a plethora of "Whereas…"-es... Why do gun people insist on trying to use 18th-century syntax?) against the "tyrannical governments" that were out to take their guns. "Gun Appreciation Day" would also involve gun shows and other local events all over the country, meant as a counter-balance to the candle-toting gun control protests that were springing up over last weekend in anticipation of Obama's inauguration and the rumored plans for new gun legislation.

Air Force calls number of sex assaults 'appalling'

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Air Force recorded an "appalling" number of reports of sexual assault last year even as it worked to curb misconduct in the wake of a sex scandal at its training headquarters in Texas, the service's top officer told lawmakers on Wednesday.

Gen. Mark Welsh, the Air Force chief of staff, said there were 796 reports of cases ranging from inappropriate touching to rape. The 2012 figure is a nearly 30 percent increase from 2011 when 614 cases were reported. The number could be much greater, Welsh said, because many cases are never reported at all.

"Calling these numbers unacceptable does not do the victims justice," Welsh said. "The truth is, these numbers are appalling!"

Welsh's testimony before the House Armed Services Committee underscores the challenges it and the other military branches face in stopping sexual assault within the ranks. Even more disturbing than the number of reports of sexual assault is the fact that most of these crimes are committed by fellow airmen, Welsh said.
