Pres. Trump never served in elected office until 2017. His interactions with Congress have so far included signing ceremonies, a gift of Starbursts, and leaders who remain wary of angering him or his core voters and therefore praise him, at least publicly.

Today, that changes.

It's not just trash -- money lost during shutdown could have long-term effects at Yosemite

As reports of trash and human waste flooding some of the country’s most beautiful land have trickled out since the U.S. government shut down, deeper problems – and a few volunteer-powered solutions – have also begun to surface.

In the nearly two weeks since government funding to national parks including Yosemite and Sequoia and Kings Canyon was slashed, trash and infrastructure issues have forced overtaxed emergency workers to close more and more sections of the snow-dipped land.

On Wednesday, Yosemite imposed a limited closure of its south entrance, allowing only those with existing resort or campground reservations within the park to enter. Visitors can access the park through Highway 140.

Our National (and State Parks) were already taking a hit--lack of congressional funding over the years--and now this!! Absolutely shameful.
I hope all will call their Congressmen and women--of all stripes and complain of this #Trumpshutdown! --and call the Whitehouse of course. Thanks.

PS-the squeaky door gets the oil.

Tony Evers says it will take a lawsuit to get him to go along with lame-duck legislation

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Patrick Marley, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Published 2:03 p.m. CT Jan. 2, 2019 | Updated 4:08 p.m. CT Jan. 2, 2019

MADISON - Incoming Gov. Tony Evers said Wednesday he would not go along with parts of lame-duck laws that curb his powers, maintaining that GOP lawmakers or their supporters would have to sue him over the issue.

“I’m anticipating most of the provisions will be challenged and I’m guessing I will be a defendant rather than a plaintiff,” Evers said in an interview Wednesday at his transition office.

The Democrat's stance changes the dynamic in the fight over the lame-duck legislation by prodding Republicans into initiating litigation instead of doing so himself.

In the interview, Evers also provided glimpses of the budget he will introduce in the coming months, saying he would look to expand health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act; allow illegal immigrants to qualify for driver’s cards; give immigrants who came to the state illegally as children the chance to pay in-state tuition; and allow property taxes to rise by more than they have in the past.

Go Tony GO!

On another matter--Walker, like Trump is anti-science.

There is some hope that WI can once again use science in policies, but we have Repugs in total control of our legislature.

"Red trees are significant to the early Christian church. In eastern Europe, the church would dye the trees red to symbolize the blood of Jesus & the resurrection."

No, red trees don't symbolize blood of Jesus and the resurrection

By Miriam Valverde on Monday, December 3rd, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.
..............................

Pushing back against comparisons to The Handmaid’s Tale and "blood trees," some people on social media defended the choice of red trees on religious grounds.
................................................

Several other scholars agreed with Kizenko and also said the meme is likely conflating the well-known tradition of dyeing eggs red with western Christmas traditions.

"I know of absolutely no early Christian tradition that used trees of any kind to celebrate Christmas," said George E. Demacopoulos, a theology professor and co-director of the Orthodox Christian Studies Center of Fordham University.
..........................................................

The choice of red in Christmas decorations at the White House "is an extension of the pales, or stripes, found in the presidential seal designed by our Founding Fathers. It’s a symbol of valor and bravery," the White House said.

Finally, and we're not sure if this what the author of the post was going for, but first lady Melania Trump was born in Slovenia, which is in south central Europe, not eastern Europe.....................

2018 was the worst for stocks in 10 years

Markets look for fresh start in 2019

New York (CNN Business)2018 was a record-setting year for stocks, but it's one investors would rather forget.

The Dow fell 5.6%. The S&P 500 was down 6.2% and the Nasdaq fell 4%. It was the worst year for stocks since 2008 and only the second year the Dow and S&P 500 fell in the past decade. (The S&P 500 and Dow were down slightly in 2015, but the Nasdaq was higher that year.)

December was a particularly dreadful month: The S&P 500 was down 9% and the Dow was down 8.7% — the worst December since 1931. In one seven-day stretch, the Dow fell by 350 points or more six times. This year's Christmas Eve was the worst ever for the index.
The S&P 500 was up or down more than 1% nine times in December alone, compared to eight times in all of 2017. It moved that much 64 times during the year.

2018 wasn't all bad. .........................
But 2018 will be remembered for its extreme volatility. ..................
