Team Trump Trips Over GOP Questions About Facts Of The Ukraine Gambit

WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 29: In this screengrab taken from a Senate Television webcast, Legal Counsel for President Donald Trump, Deputy White House Counsel Patrick Philbin, answers a question from a senator during i... MORE

January 29, 2020 11:12 p.m.

Through eight hours of senator questions Wednesday, President Trump’s legal team stumbled the most when facing questions about the underlying facts of the case against the President — including questions posed by GOP senators.

Twice, Trump’s lawyers struggled to distinguish how the President’s obsession with investigating Joe Biden could be separated from the political advantage of smearing a possible electoral opponent. They also fumbled a softball question about Hunter Biden’s allegedly corrupt activities in the Ukraine.

All three questions were put forward by Republicans, as Democrats have mostly aimed their questions at the House managers.

The difficulty the Trump team has had with grappling with the facts bolstering the Democrats case may be the reason many Republicans are coalescing around an acquittal argument that will assert the President did nothing wrong in his Ukraine gambit. It also explains why other Republicans are glomming onto a far-outside-the-norm legal theory put forward by the Trump team asserting that abuse of power, which the House alleges, is not an impeachable offense......................................

Trump administration expected to loosen restrictions on use of landmines

Source: cnn

Updated 10:24 AM ET, Thu January 30, 2020

Washington (CNN)The Trump administration is expected to loosen restrictions on the US military's ability to use landmines in the coming days, weapons that have been banned by more than 160 countries due to their history of killing and wounding civilians, multiple Defense Department officials tell CNN.

The move represents a major reversal from the approach of the Obama administration which in 2014 committed the US to largely adhering to the 1997 Ottawa Convention, the international agreement which banned the use, stockpiling, production and transfer of anti-personnel landmines. The Obama policy committed to replacing landmines in the US stockpile after they expire and directed the destruction of stockpiles not required for the defense of South Korea.

In an exception to the Ottawa convention, the Obama policy allowed the US military to continue to use landmines on the Korean Peninsula where some 28,000 US troops are stationed across the de-militarized zone from North Korea's military of one million troops. That exception was criticized by some non-government organizations.

President Donald Trump is expected to rescind Obama's 2014 order in the coming days, delegating landmine policy to the secretary of defense, thereby bringing it in line with weapons policies other than nuclear weapons................................................

‘Pathological’: Trump administration slammed for saying Coronavirus outbreak will bring jobs back to US

Published 1 min ago on January 30, 2020

President Donald Trump’s Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, whose job reportedly was on the chopping block last year but somehow managed to keep it, just announced his belief that the deadly and fast-spreading coronavirus will bring jobs back to the U.S.

......................................

But Secretary Ross found a way to put a positive spin on it.

“Every American’s heart has to go out to the victims of the coronavirus,” Wilbur told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo, “So I don’t want to talk about a victory lap over a very unfortunate and very malignant disease.”

00:45

“But the fact is it does give businesses yet another thing to consider when they go through their review of their supply chains,” he said, pivoting.

“So I think it will help accelerate the return of jobs to North America. Some to U.S., probably some to Mexico.”

Bartiromo was only too happy to support Ross: “Oh, that’s a good point.”

The Hill's Morning Report - Nearing witness vote, GOP rushes to acquit Trump

Source: the hill

By Alexis Simendinger and Al Weaver - 01/30/20 06:40 AM EST

By the time nearly ten hours of questions from senators had paused for the night during President Trump’s impeachment trial on Wednesday, the notion of acquittal on Friday with no witnesses had gained altitude in the Senate.

The trial’s format calls for another day of questions. Senators from both parties, taking their cues from their colleagues’ queries late Wednesday, said the prospect of 51 votes to call witnesses and prolong the trial appeared to have dimmed. To seek new evidence would require at least four Republicans to join every Democrat in the Senate in support of a motion to begin debate on the issue later this week.

Jay Sekulow, the president’s personal attorney, said that if witnesses are called, “We would be here for a very, very long time. And that’s not good for the United States.”

That’s a view shared by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who believes calling witnesses would create a slippery slope for Trump, the Republican Party and for GOP senators, like himself, who will face the voters in November......

South Dakota House passes bill restricting medical treatments for transgender youth

Source: the hill

By J. Edward Moreno - 01/29/20 09:53 PM EST

The South Dakota House on Wednesday evening passed legislation that would ban physicians in the state from treating transgender children with hormones and sex reassignment surgery.

The Republican-controlled chamber passed H.B. 1057 in a 46-23 vote. Under the proposed law, doctors would receive misdemeanor charges if they are caught giving transgender children under 16 years old hormone treatment. The bill also bans them from performing “castration” or vasectomies on children in that age range.

State Rep. Fred Deutsch (R), the primary sponsor of the bill, tweeted that after “some of the heaviest lobbying,” the legislature finally passed a bill to “protect gender confused children.”

On Tuesday, Duetsh backtracked on a statement he made comparing medical treatment for transgender children to Nazi “experiments.”

The bill will be sent to the state Senate as soon as next week. In a statement, the ACLU of South Dakota said that it is ready to challenge the law in court if it passes.

Repubs tell women they can not have family planning and now they tell young children and their parents, they have no control over medical decisions for their kids. Something has to give. Enough.

Here is the SD ACLU STATEMENT;

Janna Farley, jfarley@aclu.org
January 29, 2020

Today, House lawmakers voted to advance legislation that would criminalize doctors for providing medically necessary care to transgender youth and take away parents’ rights to make decisions about their children’s care.

The ACLU of South Dakota opposes HB 1057. It is unconstitutional to single out one group of people and categorically ban all care, no matter how medically necessary, and if the bill becomes law, the ACLU will challenge it in court.

“By blocking medical care supported by every major medical association, the legislature is compromising the health of trans youth in dangerous and potentially life-threatening ways,” said Libby Skarin, policy director for the ACLU of South Dakota. “Discrimination against a marginalized group is a distraction from the state’s real needs and hurts us all. Transgender young people live in our state and need to feel like the government represents them, too. The more we legislate solutions in search of problems, the more our communities suffer.”

HB 1057 continues the streak of bills that would codify discrimination against transgender youth that the South Dakota Legislature has attempted to pass over the last five years.

In addition to the ACLU of South Dakota, companies and organizations like the Sanford Health, the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the South Dakota State Medical Association, the South Dakota Retailers Association, the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, LEAD South Dakota and the Human Rights Campaign also oppose HB 1057.

.............Later, Trump went on to talk about cows. Mainly, the lack of them in Wildwood (notwithstanding the existence of Lehigh Valley Dairy Farms on Spicer Avenue).

The bovine reference arrived when Trump was speaking ill of the proposed Green New Deal. He claimed that the measure, intended to take action on climate change, would somehow separate farmers from their cows.

“You don’t have too many cows in Wildwood, but if you do, they’re gone," Trump said, attempting to tailor the Green New Deal assertion to the local community.

Beach chairs, blankets and trash. Massive mess left after Trump's Wildwood rally.

Source: NJ.com

If you were in the market for a new beach chair, Tuesday night in Wildwood was the time to pick one up.

The thousands of people who descended upon the Jersey Shore town for President Donald Trump's 'Keep America Great' rally at the Wildwoods Convention Center left behind a sea of trash in the parking lot — including their abandoned beach chairs and blankets — after the rally wrapped up.

Rally-goers were allowed to bring chairs as they waited in line — some for up to 48 hours before the event — but they weren't allowed to bring them inside the venue.

Factor in the blankets they used to stay warm, and all their drinks and food they were snacking on during the long wait in the parking lot and the convention center ends up with a parking lot full of trash to deal with Wednesday morning.

Fox Park, however, where the line ended Tuesday and where crowds remained to watch Trump on the jumbotron when they couldn't get inside, was spotless Wednesday morning.

City officials said the park cleanup was the responsibility of Wildwood, while the parking lot mess was the responsibility of the convention center, which Wildwood city does not manage.

Mayor Pete Byron on Tuesday said he wasn't invited to the rally after he told NJ Advance Media he would be seeking reimbursement from the local Republican party. He had instructed all city workers to keep detailed logs of hours and expenses related to the rally. Byron did not return a request for comment early Wednesday morning..........................................

Trump defense lawyer Alan Dershowitz makes bizarre claim that Trump's election itself is in the public interest

Here's what Dershowitz said: "If a president does something which he believes will help him get elected in the public interest, that cannot be the kind of quid pro quo that results in impeachment."

Fact check: This is a bizarre claim, because it implies Trump's election itself — an inherently political outcome — is in the public interest.

Earlier, Dershowitz also laid out a hypothetical scenario in which a Democratic president told Israel he would withhold all aid until the Israeli government stopped all settlement growth, or if he told Palestine he would withhold aid until the Palestinian government stopped "paying terrorists."

"And the president said: quid pro quo," Dershowitz added. "If you don't do it, you don't get the money. If you do it, you get the money. There is no one in this chamber that would regard that as in any way unlawful."

It's unclear where Dershowitz was going with this line of thinking, because it seems to confirm what House Democrats have argued: while previous US presidents routinely engaged in "quid pro quos" with other nations, they did so in matters of official foreign policy or national interest...........................................

Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham says John Bolton should share what he knows -- at a news conference

Source: Business Insider

Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham said on Fox News that former national security adviser John Bolton should talk — but at a news conference.
Graham told Fox News' Martha MacCallum that he has "all the evidence I need," before adding that he thinks the impeachment trial "needs to end now."
Bolton could be a key witness in the impeachment trial, if the Senate votes to allow witnesses to testify.
Revelations leaked from an unpublished manuscript of his upcoming book led to bombshell report in The New York Times seemingly confirming that Trump withheld military aid to Ukraine in exchange for investigations of a political rival.

...........................................

"Hold a news conference, and we'll consider what you've got to say if you think is that important," Graham told Fox News.

"So I just think this, to me, needs to end," Graham added. "It needs to end now."
