COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A bill that would make Ohio's abortion laws the strictest in the nation is on its way to Gov. John Kasich's desk just hours after Republicans slipped the "heartbeat bill" into a child welfare bill.
The Ohio House approved Senate amendments to the bill late Tuesday night, mostly along party lines, in a 56-39 vote. Earlier in the day, Senate Republicans added language banning abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, commonly known as the "heartbeat bill," to an unrelated measure. That could be as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, before a woman might find out she's pregnant.
Democrats adamantly opposed the bill, saying it would risk women's health and trigger an expensive lawsuit on the back of taxpayers.
If Kasich signs the bill, Ohio will be the third state to pass such a law. Courts have found Arkansas and North Dakota laws unconstitutional, the U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld those lower-court rulings, and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear further appeal.
Ohio Right to Life, the state's largest anti-abortion organization, does not support the legislation because the current Supreme Court would likely find it unconstitutional. For that reason, Senate leaders had previously declined to vote on legislation.

The bill makes an appropriation so Kasich would be able to veto the abortion provision while approving the rest of the bill. He might have a second abortion bill on his desk at the same time -- the House plans to pass a 20-week abortion ban Wednesday.......................................

This Thanksgiving, I sat at a dinner table with an empty seat. It’s the very seat where my mother, Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, should be. Smiling, laughing and enjoying a holiday meal with her daughters and grandchildren. Instead, my mom wasn’t there because nearly four years ago, she was murdered in Newtown, Conn., along with five of her colleagues and 20 first-graders. That day, as the principal of Sandy Hook Elementary School, she died a hero trying to protect her innocent students.
My heart — and my dinner table — reflect the hole in my life that will never be repaired. And while I’ve chosen a path of gun safety advocacy that not everyone agrees with, some opponents of gun violence prevention follow a different, darker path. A fringe movement of “Sandy Hook truthers” promotes hateful conspiracy theories that the shooting never took place. My Thanksgiving table tells a different story. And so does the reality of the families who had their loved ones ripped out of their arms by senseless gun violence.
The most prominent popularizer of the "Sandy Hook hoax" theory is the radio and Web personality Alex Jones. He is the kind of person you’d expect to be confined to the darkest echo chambers of the Internet. Yet, Jones has been bolstered by the very man who has proclaimed he’ll make our country great again: President-elect Donald Trump.
A quick Google search for the phrase “Sandy Hook truthers” will turn up thousands of stories about how the worst day of my life was actually an elaborate conspiracy that never happened at all. It’s insanity................................

Despite dueling court rulings, Michigan recount keeps going

In a 2-1 opinion, the 6th Circuit said Goldsmith "did not abuse (his) discretion" in ruling that the start of the recount should be accelerated to Monday, from a planned start date of Wednesday.
Though that's a blow to the Michigan Republican Party, which sought to stop the recount, the ruling also contained hope for state Republicans, because it was limited to Goldsmith's action in doing away with a planned two business day delay in starting the recount in Michigan. It didn't address whether the recount itself was lawful.
Minutes after the 6th Circuit issued that opinion, the Michigan Court of Appeals released a 3-0 opinion, following a hearing Tuesday afternoon, saying the state Board of Canvassers never should have allowed the recount to proceed because Stein -- who received just over 1% of the vote -- did not qualify as an "aggrieved candidate" under state law..........................

McConnell: We'll start Obamacare repeal on day one

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) says legislation repealing the Affordable Care Act will be the first order of business in the new Congress.
McConnell announced the agenda Tuesday, after meeting with Vice President-elect Mike Pence and Senate GOP colleagues over lunch.
"When we come back Jan. 3 we'll be moving to the ObamaCare replacement resolution, the ObamaCare repeal resolution will be the first item up in the New Year," McConnell said, referring to repeal legislation that is expected to pass with a simple majority vote under special budgetary rules.

There is a dispute between GOP Senate and House conservatives whether the repeal of the law should be phased in over three years — a timeline senators favor — or more quickly than that.

3 Million People In Red States Are Going To Lose Their Health Insurance Thanks To Trump

A new study found that 3 million Americans who live in red states are receiving subsidies to help pay for their health insurance, but once Donald Trump and the Republican congressional majority repeal Obamacare, these people will most likely not be able to afford insurance.
A prime example of people voting against their own self-interest can be found in the latest Kaiser Family Foundation study showing how many people in each state are getting subsidies for their health insurance.
Greg Sargent of The Washington Post added up the numbers for people in red states, “In red states, a total of at least 3 million people are currently getting subsidies. This doesn’t include the swing states that Donald Trump won. If you add those in, that swells the total to over six million people.”
The fact that three million people are going to lose their health insurance after the ACA is repealed, just in red states, is why Republicans are intending to rush through a repeal bill while delaying replacement of the ACA for years. It is no accident that Republicans are punting on replacing Obamacare for exactly three years. Congressional Republicans don’t want to face the wrath of voters who lost their health insurance in the 2018 midterm election, so they pushed it back.............................

Michael G. Flynn, the son of retired Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn, has served as his father's top aide and chief of staff. CNN's KFile previously reported that he pushed extreme conspiracies theories on Twitter and Facebook.
An email sent to Lt. Gen. Flynn at an address he used for his consulting group bounced back with a message saying, "This email account will be suspended indefinitely." The email pointed to official .gov emails both the older and younger Flynn.

On Sunday evening, the younger Flynn defended the baseless "PizzaGate" conspiracy, the name given to a theory peddled online that claims Comet Ping Pong restaurant and its owner were involved in a child sex operation. The owner has vehemently denied the charges. Earlier in the day, DC police arrested a man with an assault rifle who admitted to coming to the restaurant to investigate the online conspiracy.
"Until #Pizzagate proven to be false, it'll remain a story. The left seems to forget #PodestaEmails and the many 'coincidences' tied to it," he tweeted.

The conspiracy theory may sound absurd, but it has won over lots of believers, who keep turning up at the restaurant looking for enslaved children.
“They putting a lot of curses and spells over the city,” said a woman who declined to give her name. “All this underground tunnel that helps them take the kids and transport them back and forth so they can do these rituals.”
She pounded on the wood patio in front of the restaurant.
The user-generated news site Reddit has now shut down the PizzaGate thread, and said it will not be a party to witchhunts.

Police in Roxboro, North Carolina, will hold a press conference Monday to address community concerns after a band of KKK members drove through the small town Saturday celebrating President-elect Donald Trumps victory in the recent election.
The parade was originally going to take place in Pelham, 40 minutes away from Roxboro. But organizers moved the event after protesters gathered in Pelham Saturday morning to confront the Klansmen, according to the Charlotte News Observer.
Two men were also arrested on Friday night after a stabbing at a KKK meeting in Caswell County, where Pelham is located.
Local police and state troopers blocked several intersections in a bid to keep the peace as the parade of vehicles waving American, Confederate and KKK flags zipped through the town of some 8,000 people. Men and women shouted White power! and Hail victory! Only a handful of bystanders watched. The parade was over in minutes, officials said. ......................
