House Republicans shut down investigation into Flint water crisis, blame EPA instead
Source: salon.com

After three hearings about how thousands of residents had their water contaminated, the GOP is satisfied
Sophia Tesfaye
As President Barack Obama signed a bill on Friday authorizing $170 million to address the problem of the lead being found in drinking water in Flint, Michigan, Republicans in the House quietly closed a nearly yearlong investigation of the disaster without receiving crucial information from Republican Gov. Rick Snyder.
....................
But on Friday just hours after the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, Marylands Rep. Elijah Cummings, called for a subpoena of the Republican governor of Michigan responsible for appointing the emergency manager who had switched Flints water supply, Chaffetz announced he was ending the congressional investigation. Chaffetz said he had concluded that a series of failures at all levels of government caused, and then exacerbated, the water crisis.
............................
Arguing that the federal regulatory framework is so outdated that it sets up states to fail, Chaffetz called for EPA funds designated for use for studying and combatting climate change be redirected to water pipe improvement projects across the nation. Chaffetz also called for removing the requirement that federally funded drinking-water construction projects pay prevailing wages under the Davis Bacon Act...................
Democrats, however, have pushed back on the Committees rushed assessment, criticizing Chaffetzs sudden lack of interest in thorough investigations. (Under Chaffetz chairmanship, the Republican-led House Oversight Committee has chased the Planned Parenthood hoax, sought to impeach the IRS commissioner over the agencys scrutiny of Tea Party-affiliated groups that sought tax-exempt status and vowed to continue investigating Hillary Clinton over her use of a private email server even after the election.)

McCain: Russian election-related hacks threaten to 'destroy democracy'
By Eric Bradner, CNN

McCain: This is 'unraveling of post-WII peace'
Washington (CNN)Sen. John McCain said Russian election-related hacks threaten to "destroy democracy" and faulted the American response as "totally paralyzed."
McCain, the Arizona Republican who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, again called for a select committee to investigate the CIA's finding that Russia hacked Democrats' emails in a bid to help President-elect Donald Trump defeat Hillary Clinton.
"This is the sign of a possible unraveling of the world order that was established after World War II, which has made one of the most peaceful periods in the history of the world," McCain told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union." "We're starting to see the strains and the unraveling of it, and that is because of the absolute failure of American leadership."
"When America doesn't lead, a lot of other bad people do," he added.

Russias ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, was reportedly shot and killed today while visiting an art gallery in Ankara. According to Turkish media reports, the gunman chanted Islamist slogans after firing the shot. Photographs from the scene show a man in a black suit holding a pistol near the podium where Karlov was shot. The video below appears to show the moment of the attack:

Not much is known about the attack yet, but it comes after widespread anger and days of protests in Turkey against the Russian-backed Syrian regime assault on the city of Aleppo. Turkey has seen a number of major terrorist attacks this year, by both Islamist groups, including ISIS, and Kurdish militants.
Russia and Turkey have been at odds for years over the conflict in Syria, with Moscow as the primary foreign backer of Bashar al-Assads government and Turkey aiding the rebellion against him. Relations between the two countries hit a nadir late last year after Turkey shot down a Russian fighter on the Syria-Turkey border. While the underlying dispute remains, ties have improved over the past year between Russias Vladimir Putin and Turkeys Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The foreign and defense ministers of Russia, Iran, and Turkey are due to meet in Moscow tomorrow to discuss the future of Syria.
Russia has justified waging war in defense of Assads regime on the ground that it is fighting terrorism. But while Putin and Assad are definitely crushing the rebels as a force that can effectively fight and control territory in Syria, those fighters may now turn to traditional terrorist tacticsbombings, assassinationsand not just within the borders of Syria.........................
Update 12:39 p.m.: Longer video from the scene shows the gunman yelling about Syria and Aleppo:

A new poll shows an astonishing 52% of Republicans incorrectly think Trump won the popular vote
Source: washington post
By John Sides December 18 at 6:00 AM
President-elect Donald Trump. (Alice Li/The Washington Post)
...........Clintons lead now exceeds 2.8 million votes (more than 2.1 percent of the total vote) and continues to grow. Many Democrats hope this fact alone might persuade Republican electors to reject Trump in favor of some alternative.
But this hope faces a serious challenge: Half of all Republicans actually think Trump won the popular vote.
In a nationally representative online survey of 1,011 Americans conducted by Qualtrics between Dec. 6 and 12, we asked respondents, In last months election, Donald Trump won the majority of votes in the electoral college. Who do you think won the most popular votes?
Twenty-nine percent said Donald Trump won the popular vote. This is a slightly larger proportion than in a recent Pew survey in which 19 percent said Trump won the popular vote.
Respondents correct understanding of the popular vote depended a great deal on partisanship. A large fraction of Republicans 52 percent said Trump won the popular vote, compared with only 7 percent of Democrats and 24 percent of independents. Among Republicans without any college education, the share was even larger: 60 percent, compared with 37 percent of Republicans with a college degree.

Hate Group Leader Calls on Trump to Lead Witch-Hunt of Pro-LGBT Officials

Trump needs to make clear 'activists' within the State Department promoting" pro-LGBT policies "will be ferreted out and will be replaced"
Hate Group Leader Calls on Trump to Lead Witch-Hunt of Pro-LGBT Officials
The Family Research Councils Tony Perkins is the leader of a hate group and it comes as no surprise then that he looks to Trump to push his own hate-filled agenda. According to Perkins, writing at FRCs Washington Update, Foreign officials have complained about the strong arming by the State Department to forcing them to accept its liberal view on social issues.
And he wants Trump to do something about it: time for a witch-hunt. Because letting people act in ways contrary to his religious beliefs is, for Perkins, somehow an attack on religious freedom. Perkins calls it a fundamental human right but he seems to think its fundamental only for Evangelicals.
Perkins claims,
Ive personally heard the concerns from foreign ambassadors and frequently hear from Members of Congress who have received complaints for foreign officials over how the administration has linked foreign aid to the adoption of the State Departments LGBTQ and pro-abortion agendas.
Perkins singles out Obama as pursuing some sort of unholy agenda by promoting pro-LGBT policies most nations of the West agree is right. Far more countries support LGBT rights than oppose them. Which makes Perkins, not Obama, the outlier:
To carry out this extreme agenda, the Obama............
