Reid: FBI director's letter cost Democrats the election, Senate

Source: cnn

Story highlights

Retiring Sen. Harry Reid said he urged FBI director James Comey to address Russian hacking
The President-elect has brushed off the CIA's conclusion that Russia hacked

(CNN)Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said Monday FBI Director James Comey was "heavily involved as a partisan" in the weeks leading up to the election and that Comey's actions handed the presidency to Donald Trump.

The retiring Nevada Democrat said Democrats "would have won the majority in the Senate and would have won the presidency but for Comey."

"It's obvious he was a partisan in all this," Reid told CNN's Manu Raju in an interview. "There's information out there. He had it, I'm confident. And he ignored it."

He said Comey "significantly" helped make Trump the President-elect, faulting his failure to condemn Russian hacking of Democratic operatives and his handling of the investigation into Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's email server.

Reid said he urged Comey to address the hacking, which intelligence agencies have concluded was the result of Russian efforts to tilt the election toward Trump.
"I am saying the FBI did nothing -- did nothing....................

Press Releases 12.12.16
Pelosi Statement Calling for a Bipartisan Investigation on Russian Interference in U.S. Elections

San Francisco – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement calling for a bipartisan Congressional review following the U.S. intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia interfered in U.S. elections for the purposes of affecting the outcome. Pelosi, the longest serving Member of the House Intelligence Committee, is a former Ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.

“The U.S. intelligence community has determined that Russia interfered in U.S. elections. There must be no equivocation or ignoring the seriousness of the intelligence community’s conclusion about Russia’s actions. Regardless of the outcome of the election, the American people deserve to know the truth and a commitment to protect our democracy from foreign meddling.

“Congress has a responsibility to investigate Russian hacking into our election. I also support the proposal by House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Ranking Member Elijah Cummings and Intelligence Committee Member Eric Swalwell to establish a bipartisan, independent commission.

“Speaker Ryan must join the bipartisan call for a formal investigation into Russia’s unprecedented assault on our democracy.”

Geert Wilders, the head of the Netherlands’ far-right, anti-immigration Party for Freedom and a legitimate contender for prime minister, has been convicted of inciting discrimination for remarks he made at a campaign rally in 2014, when he said the country would be safer with fewer Moroccans. From the New York Times:

Mr. Wilders was found not guilty of hate-speech charges in connection with comments he made about Moroccans in a nationally broadcast TV program filmed at a public market a week earlier, but he was found to have violated laws on inciting discrimination when he led a crowd at a political rally in chanting “fewer, fewer” to the question, “Do you want more or fewer Moroccans in this city and the Netherlands?”

.......................................

Trump’s campaign and victory have been invigorating for Wilders, who has adopted the slogan “Make the Netherlands Great Again.” “We are witnessing the same uprising on both sides of the Atlantic,” he wrote in a Breitbart op-ed the day following Trump’s election. “The Patriotic Spring is sweeping the Western world. People are standing up and liberating themselves.”

Unless you catch "hackers" in the act, it is very hard to determine who was doing the hacking. Why wasn't this brought up before election?

Trump Told Russia To Blame for Hacks Long Before Debate

Clinton: 'We Deserve Answers' on Russian Involvement 0:46

During Sunday's debate, Donald Trump once again said he doesn't know whether Russia is trying to hack the U.S. election, despite Friday's statement by the U.S. intelligence community pointing the finger at Putin -- and despite the fact that Trump was personally briefed on Russia's role in the hacks by U.S. officials.

A senior U.S. intelligence official assured NBC News that cybersecurity and the Russian government's attempts to interfere in the 2016 election have been briefed to, and discussed extensively with, both parties' candidates, surrogates and leadership, since mid-August. "To profess not to know at this point is willful misrepresentation," said the official. "..................

On Sunday, Trump disputed the idea there was any hack at all. "I notice, anytime anything wrong happens, they like to say the Russians are — [Hillary Clinton] doesn't know if it's the Russians doing the hacking. Maybe there is no hacking," Trump told moderator Martha Raddatz of ABC News. "But they always blame Russia. And the reason they blame Russia because they think they're trying to tarnish me with Russia. I know nothing about Russia."

It's the second time in two debates that Trump has declined to acknowledge that the hacks, mostly on Democratic targets, are real, much less that Russia is behind them.

"I don't think anybody knows it was Russia that broke into the DNC. She's saying Russia, Russia, Russia, but I don't -- maybe it was. I mean, it could be Russia, but it could also be China," he told NBC's Lester Holt on Sept. 26. "It could also be lots of other people. It also could be somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds, OK?"

But weeks prior to the first debate, Trump had already been told privately by the intelligence community that the Russians were implicated. ..........................

Where Trump Critics See Conflicts, Partners See Golden Opportunities

Source: abc

Dec 11, 2016, 9:27 AM ET

For President-elect Donald Trump’s global business partners, the deals that some have called a conflict of interest are looking a lot like money in the bank.

“His brand has become stronger, more global,” said Hussain Sajwani, the chairman of a Dubai company that is preparing early next year to open the clubhouse for the first of two 18-hole Trump golf course developments. “We definitely are benefiting from that – the strength of that brand.”

In the days after Trump’s electoral victory, Sajwani told ABC News he announced an expansion of the Dubai development, and on a trip to New York he met with Trump’s daughter Ivanka to discuss the ongoing ventures. The Dubai company is in the midst of marketing memberships to Trump International Golf Club, Dubai, and selling the luxury villas that surround the course.

At the same time they are planning construction of a second course designed by Tiger Woods. ...................................
