Betsy DeVos wants to change campus sexual assault policies. Slotkin has plan to stop her.

Seems most things in our USA are going to bonkers since Trump team arrived on the scene.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Holly, proposed legislation Tuesday to stop Education Secretary Betsy DeVos from advancing rules that critics say could hurt efforts to fight sexual harassment and assaults on college campuses.

Slotkin is one of three members of the Democratic majority in the U.S. House pushing a bill that would prevent the Education Department from implementing proposed rule changes to Title IX, the regulation that sets policies on sex discrimination and assaults at educational institutions receiving federal funds.

DeVos last year proposed changes to Title IX in response to those made years earlier during President Barack Obama's administration to force colleges and universities to take a stronger approach to handling accusations of sexual assault and harassment.

Critics argue DeVos' plan, which has not been finalized, would go too far in the other direction, raising legal standards for what constitutes sexual harassment, increasing due process rights for those accused and making it harder for accusers to report and prosecute claims on college campuses. They also argue the definition of what qualifies as harassment would be narrowed and colleges and universities would have to respond to fewer kinds of claims.

Slotkin introduced the legislation Tuesday along with Democratic Reps. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Jackie Speier of California and Annie Kuster of New Hampshire.

Justice Department watchdog investigating possible FBI leaks to Giuliani in 2016

Inspector general: FBI properly opened its investigation

Washington (CNN)The Justice Department inspector general continues to investigate potential leaks by FBI officials in New York to President Donald Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani before the 2016 election.

Inspector General Michael Horowitz told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday that the investigation is ongoing, and is broader than just Giuliani, but suggested his team was struggling to prove that there were illegal leaks.

Shortly before the election, Giuliani claimed that he heard about big problems coming soon for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. That was shortly before then-FBI Director James Comey announced he was reopening the criminal probe into Clinton's email server, which didn't lead to any criminal charges. The polls shifted after Comey's comments, and Clinton has said it was a main reason for her defeat.

Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont noted on Wednesday that Comey previously confirmed to him that the matter was under investigation, and asked Horowitz for an update about FBI "leaks to Rudolph Giuliani and others."

Horowitz replied, "we were very concerned about that," and he noted that he mentioned some of those potentially improper contacts in the report he put out last year reviewing the Clinton email probe...........................

Grassroots Progressive Group Gives Warren Top Marks Among 2020 Democrats

December 11, 20195:00 AM ET

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., received top marks from the progressive grassroots organization Indivisible's rankings of the Democratic presidential candidates released on Wednesday.

The former law professor in the 2020 field is the only presidential candidate to earn an A in a new scorecard, released on Wednesday by the grassroots progressive group Indivisible
.

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren earns 95% in a ranking which evaluates candidates' stances on the top progressive issues that Indivisible's hundreds of local chapters prioritize, chief among them "democracy reforms" like ending the Senate filibuster, expanding voting rights and increasing the size of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Former Vice President Joe Biden came in dead last among the eight Democratic candidates Indivisible rated, with less than 50%.

The group shared its scorecard results exclusively with NPR ahead of their publication.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is a close second behind Warren at 89%. ...............................

Trump Pays $2 Million to 8 Charities for Misuse of Foundation

Under a settlement, the president admitted he had used his charity to bolster his campaign and settle business debts.

...........................

The payments were part of a settlement announced last month that capped a drawn-out legal battle. In the end, the president admitted in court documents that he had used the foundation to settle legal obligations of his businesses and even to purchase a portrait of himself.

...................
The president wired payments directly to the organizations a few weeks ago, but the payments were not made public until this week, an official in the attorney’s office said......................

...........

The nonprofit groups that received payments were the Army Emergency Relief, the Children’s Aid Society, Citymeals on Wheels, Give an Hour, Martha’s Table, the United Negro College Fund, the United Way of the National Capital Area, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Each received a total of $476,140.01.

.......

..........
In a mid-November filing, the attorney general’s office requested that the judge, Justice Saliann Scarpulla of State Supreme Court in Manhattan, order Mr. Trump not to write off the payments as charitable contributions in his tax filings, but the judge did not do so.

As part of the settlement, Mr. Trump, who at first dismissed the suit as a political attack, made 19 detailed admissions, acknowledging, for example, that the foundation had purchased the $10,000 portrait of himself that was ultimately displayed at one of his Florida hotels.

.......................

.....................

..............................
As part of the settlement, Mr. Trump’s three children who were officers of the foundation — Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump — were ordered to undergo mandatory training to ensure they do not engage in similar misconduct in the future.

On Tuesday, the attorney general’s office confirmed the children had undergone the training.

Rep. Stephanie Murphy says freshman class is more than just progressive firebrands

"There are actually quite a few women who are in the moderate, center-left kind of space,” the Florida Democrat says.

Updated: 12/10/2019 11:06 AM EST

Rep. Stephanie Murphy on Tuesday asserted that ideological differences between progressive freshman congresswomen and less liberal Democratic lawmakers have not inhibited consensus-building among the party’s members in the House of Representatives.

“I don’t think so, and I actually would challenge the notion that the women that have come in are on the progressive end,” the Florida Democrat said at POLITICO’s Women Rule Summit in Washington.

“I think we have a nice, you know, spread across the ideological spectrum within our Democratic caucus, and there are actually quite a few women who are in the moderate, center-left kind of space,”
added Murphy, who is a co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition, a caucus of House Democrats who prioritize fiscal responsibility and national defense.

The 2018 midterm elections saw several female Democratic candidates, many with backgrounds in the military or intelligence community, emerge victorious in competitive races to capture previously Republican-held seats — including Reps. Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, Elaine Luria of Virginia, Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey, Elissa Slotkin of Michigan and Abigail Spanberger of Virginia
.

But Murphy acknowledged that much of the media’s coverage of the new class of lawmakers has focused on the party’s progressive wing. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan have garnered significant attention for their far-reaching policy proposals and the racist attacks on them by President Donald Trump.

Trump campaign tweets video of Trump as 'Avengers' villain Thanos

By Zack Budryk - 12/10/19 04:31 PM EST

President Trump’s campaign tweeted a doctored clip of the president as Thanos, the villain in the Avengers film franchise.

The clip depicts Trump as Thanos saying “I am inevitable” before snapping his fingers, causing Democratic House leadership to disintegrate in the manner of the climax of “Infinity War,” during which the character dispatches several of the heroes, and half the world’s population, in a similar way.

“House Democrats can push their sham impeachment all they want. President Trump's re-election is,” the account tweeted................................
