Oprah Winfrey Set to Interview Beto O'Rourke

9:53 PM PST 2/4/2019 by the Associated Press

The Texas pol's appearance Tuesday on 'Oprah's SuperSoul Conversations from Times Square' comes ahead of a possible presidential campaign.

Beto O'Rourke's weeks of near-silence end on a massive stage when he sits down for an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The appearance Tuesday on Oprah's SuperSoul Conversations from Times Square comes ahead of a possible presidential campaign and puts O'Rourke's charisma put to the test.

O'Rourke dazzled Democrats last year by nearly defeating Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in the country's largest red state. But his presidential prospects have been overshadowed more recently with the generally well-received 2020 campaign launches of Sens. Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Cory Booker of New Jersey.

After months of on-again off-again flirtation with a campaign, O'Rourke's supporters say they're ready for some clarity.

"A lot of people have been projecting their own desires to see him run and they're hoping that he will announce on Oprah, which would be so fitting," said Nate Lerner, co-founder of Draft Beto, a group of Democratic activists who are raising money and building a potential campaign infrastructure should O'Rourke run. "I'm hoping he at least does give some indication of where he's at."

Lerner may not even get that much, though. O'Rourke's aides say he is still making up his mind on a White House run and isn't expected to announce a decision during Tuesday's taping.........................

Though the taping is Tuesday, the interview won't air on Winfrey's network until Feb. 16. After that, O'Rourke doesn't have another headline-grabbing event on his schedule — at least not yet.

Pentagon report warns about the future of ISIS in Syria, as Trump says US troops can return 'very quickly'

Feb 4, 2019, 6:53 PM ET

A Pentagon report released on Monday indicated that the Islamic State remains an active insurgent group in Iraq and Syria and that, without sustained pressure, the group could reconstitute in Syria within six to 12 months.

The report comes just one day after President Donald Trump said in an interview with CBS News' "Face the Nation," that the U.S. would send troops back to Syria if needed, even as the administration continues its plan to withdraw 2,000 U.S. forces from Syria.

"We have very fast airplanes, we have very good cargo planes. We can come back very quickly, and I'm not leaving," he said.

In the same interview, the president also said the purpose of the U.S. military presence in Iraq includes "watching" Iran -- a comment that drew consternation from Iraqi leadership.

................................

"Currently, ISIS is regenerating key functions and capabilities more quickly in Iraq than in Syria, but absent sustained [counterterrorism] pressure, ISIS could likely resurge in Syria within six to twelve months and regain limited territory in the [Middle Euphrates River Valley (MERV)]," CENTCOM added ..................................

New York prosecutors seek records from Trump inauguration committee: Sources

Another probe that could hamstring the president and his lawyers is widening.

Prosecutors in New York’s Southern District have subpoenaed documents from President Donald Trump’s inauguration committee, sources with direct knowledge told ABC News, indicating that even as the special counsel probe appears to be nearing an end, another investigation that could hamstring the president and his lawyers is widening.

The contact from the Southern District, which came from its public corruption section, is the latest activity focusing on Trump’s political fundraising both before and immediately after his 2016 election.

“We have just received a subpoena for documents. While we are still reviewing the subpoena, it is our intention to cooperate with the inquiry,” a spokesperson for the inauguration told ABC News.

Prosecutors are seeking documents and records related to the committee’s donors to the massive inauguration fund, according to sources familiar with the request. Prosecutors are also seeking attendees to the events surrounding the inauguration including benefits to top level donors such as photo opportunities with President Trump, sources said...................................

CNN panel falsely claims that Democrats haven't offered a plan on border security

CNN panel falsely claims that Democrats haven’t offered a plan on border security

Less than one week after CNN reported on a border security proposal by Democratic leadership, a CNN host and panelist falsely claimed that Democrats “haven’t offered any kind of plan whatsoever” on border security. The Democrats’ proposal includes 1,000 new U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers; “new imaging technology at land ports of entry to scan for drugs, weapons, and contraband”; “increased resources and technology at mail-processing facilities to intercept opioids and fentanyl”; and the “expansion of Air and Marine Operations on the border and in US waters.”.....................................

From the February 4 edition of CNN’s Inside Politics:

ANNIE LINSKEY (WASHINGTON POST POLITICAL REPORTER): There also is some polling though, that Republicans have lost ground on the border, which I found quite interesting. The Washington Post did a poll earlier in the last few days that showed Democrats, amazingly, had a slight edge among -- Americans believe that Democrats have a slight edge on how they would handle immigration, which is something that Democrats traditionally have had been down by nine points. So there is quite a lot of turmoil right now on that issue, and I think that you're right, that the president is going to want us to recapture it because it would be quite concerning to see Democrats, suddenly -- especially since they haven't offered any kind of plan whatsoever, but if Americans are beginning to think, “Wow, Democrats might do a better job.”

DANA BASH (GUEST HOST): You know, you mentioned the Democrats haven't offered a plan. That's a really important point and it has gotten a little bit lost in the fact that there was such a robust political fight over on the president's terms, on what he wants. And if it had gone on longer, perhaps more discussion would have happened over, “Well, what are the Democrats offering?”

Howard Schultz's Own Polling Finds His Campaign Would Reelect Trump

Source: nymag.com

4:07 P.M. By Jonathan Chait

Howard Schultz’s presidential campaign opened up to mixed reviews — within the prized demographic of socially liberal, fiscally moderate billionaire moguls. (Michael Bloomberg expressed disapproval, while Schultz himself expresses strong enthusiasm.) Every other demographic category has registered a catastrophically negative response. Change Research found Schultz’s favorable rating among the public is 4 percent, with 40 percent viewing him unfavorably, and the rest not knowing who this person is.

The poll even tested prompting respondents with favorable descriptions of Schultz — “Howard Schultz is a true American success story … He believes that the system is broken and there are extremists on both sides, and only an independent centrist can solve the problems that Republicans and Democrats refuse to fix.” — which nonetheless failed to coax more than 9 percent of the public to express support for Schultz’s campaign against any opponent. The polling still found that Schultz’s dismal percentage of support was nonetheless enough to swing the election to Donald Trump against most possible Democratic opponents. So it is simultaneously true that almost nobody likes Schultz and that he could pull enough votes to reelect Trump.

Perhaps in an effort to push back against this data, Schultz’s team released very partial internal polling data. Somewhat suspiciously, the data did not show what information the respondents were given about Schultz, to possibly prompt them to support him. The bottom-line figures showed Schultz drawing a whopping 17 percent of the national vote in a three-way race with Trump and either Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren. The same figures showed Trump beating both Democrats 33 to 32 percent.

In other words, Schultz’s own polling indicates he would lose badly, and would throw the race to Trump. The independent polling is even worse than that.

Partisan Republicans have supplied one of the few sources of support for Schultz’s candidacy......................................................

Right now, Republican senators are trying to repeal the estate tax – the next step in their quest to make the rich richer.

There is no world in which the Senate should act on that before we ensure every federal contract worker receives backpay after 35 days of lost wages.

Senate Dems introduce bill to block Trump from using military funds to build wall

Source: the hill

By Jordain Carney - 02/04/19 02:52 PM EST

Senate Democrats introduced legislation on Monday to prevent President Trump from using military and disaster relief funds to construct the U.S.-Mexico border wall should he declare a national emergency.

The legislation would prevent Trump from using funding from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers civil works funds and military construction funding "for the construction of barriers, land acquisition, or any other associated activities on the southern border without specific statutory authorization from Congress" if he declared a national emergency.

Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) said that while an emergency declaration to construct the U.S.-Mexico border wall would be challenged in court, "Congress should not wait for the courts to act."

"We must stand up and assert our role as a co-equal branch of government, and we must prevent the president from going around Congress to raid critical funds … for a politically-motivated, unjustified national emergency declaration that isn’t based in reality," he said.

Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) added that the bill would "prevent funds designated for critical military construction and disaster response" from being used to build the wall in the event Trump declares a national emergency...............................

Baldwin: 'We will rue the day' Trump declares national emergency for border wall

Source: Politico

By CAITLIN OPRYSKO 02/04/2019 09:14 AM EST

Sen. Tammy Baldwin said Monday that the prospect of a national emergency declaration from President Donald Trump to begin construction on his long-promised border wall has "many Republicans shaking in their boots" because of the precedent it could set for future Democratic presidents.

The Wisconsin Democrat told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Monday that such an emergency declaration, a step Trump has said he could take if lawmakers fail to pass legislation that includes funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, would be quickly tied up in court with legal challenges. The declaration would unlock military resources for wall construction and, Baldwin cautioned, set a standard for executive action that Republicans could come to regret.

“I think everyone’s clear that's going to get litigated, not the question of whether his opinion of an emergency is the same as other people's but we will rue the day when we let a president start taking money for one purpose, declaring an emergency and using it for another,” she said. “I'm sure there are many Republicans shaking in their boots about that happening with a future Democratic president.”

While some Republicans have taken the same line of reasoning against a national emergency declaration, expressing discomfort with the idea of the president acting unilaterally to fulfill his signature 2016 campaign pledge, other allies of the president have supported his plan despite decrying the “overreach” of Trump’s Democratic predecessor, President Barack Obama.
