Bloomberg slams Trump on coronavirus: 'We don't have anybody to respond'

Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg noted that Donald Trump's administration has undermined the agencies now rushing to address the deadly new virus.

From the Feb. 25 Democratic presidential debate:

MIKE BLOOMBERG: If you have good public health, then you can do things.

And one of the great problems today: You read about the virus.

What's really happening here is the president fired the pandemic specialists in this country two years ago. So there's nobody here to figure out what the hell we should be doing.

And he's defunded Centers for Disease Control [and Prevention] — CDC — so we don't have the organization we need.

This is a very serious thing. As you see, the stock market is falling apart because people are really worried and they should be. We don't have anybody to respond.

WaPo last week: Trump has told advisers that he does not want the administration to do or say anything regarding the Coronavirus outbreak that would further spook the markets. He remains worried that any large-scale outbreak could hurt his reelection bid.

This makes me angry--but actually more sad than angry.

As Trump Barricades the Border, Legal Immigration Is Beginning to Plunge

The New York Times•February 24, 2020

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s immigration policies — like travel bans and visa restrictions or refugee caps and asylum changes — have begun to deliver on a long-standing goal: Legal immigration has fallen more than 11% and a steeper drop is looming.

While Trump highlights the construction of a border wall to stress his war on illegal immigration, it is through policy changes, not physical barriers, that his administration has been able to seal the United States. Two more measures took effect Friday and Monday, an expansion of his travel ban and strict wealth tests on green card applicants.

“He’s really ticking off all the boxes. It’s kind of amazing,” said Sarah Pierce, a policy analyst with the Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan research group. “In an administration that’s been perceived to be haphazard, on immigration they’ve been extremely consistent and barreling forward.”

The number of people who obtained lawful permanent residence, besides refugees who entered the United States in previous years, declined to 940,877 in the 2018 fiscal year from 1,063,289 in the 2016 fiscal year, according to an analysis of government data by the National Foundation for American Policy. Four years ago, legal immigration was at its highest level since 2006, when 1,266,129 people obtained lawful permanent residence in the United States.

............

But two more tough policies were to take effect by Monday. ...................................

Yikes! According to Forbes, in 2006 Bloomberg was worth $5.3B (#44); in 2009, his net worth had balooned to $20B (#8).. so while people were losing their homes, Bloomberg made nearly $15B off Wall Street software.

Trump justice: He's using his office to reward friends, punish enemies and tarnish America

Trump justice: He's using his office to reward friends, punish enemies and tarnish America

We count on an independent Department of Justice to look out for us and for America. But Trump has commandeered DOJ to protect his friends and allies.

“The Real Housewives” have nothing on the Department of Justice when it comes to drama. I don’t mean to be flippant. But if I can’t marvel at the absurdity of the nuclear meltdown that is gripping the institution to which I dedicated my professional career, I’m afraid I will cry.

I was concerned when the punchline “Donald Trump” came to be preceded by the title “president.” But my beloved DOJ was filled with career prosecutors whose dedication and integrity would keep the ship on course — even if the storm lasted four years.

I was confident that the traditions that made the Justice Department the most respected law enforcement organization in the world would surely allow it to weather any attorney general Trump could install.

But Trump has commandeered the department and sent a clear message: “Investigate me or people close to me and I will undercut years of your hard work, trash your reputation on Twitter, and create a Hobson’s choice between your integrity and your ability to earn a living. And if you pick the former, I will issue a pardon and undo all you worked for anyway.”

Destructive Trump-Barr alliance

Since Republican senators refused to remove Trump from office, there’s nothing in his path. Trump is certainly getting no pushback from Attorney General William Barr, who has revealed himself to be the second coming of the late Roy Cohn — Trump’s former personal attorney who was disbarred due to his sleazy legal tactics.

Barr’s first order of business was to release a misleading summary of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report — effectively urinating on what should have been a bonfire that burned Trump’s presidency to the ground. Then, Barr stonewalled congressional efforts to do what an honest reading of Mueller’s report should have done.

Things have only gotten worse since Trump survived his Senate impeachment trial. For a start, Barr has said that he must personally approve any investigation into corruption by a presidential candidate or campaign. That’s the DOJ equivalent of a GPS warning: "Red light camera ahead."
President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr

No agent or prosecutor is going to tap the attorney general on the shoulder to ask permission to investigate the man Barr lives to protect. That means Trump and his campaign can solicit assistance from foreign adversaries in this year’s presidential election, and no one will stop them.

As for existing investigations, Barr is second-guessing his department’s work and even changing it to be more favorable to Trump. After Trump tweeted his dissatisfaction with DOJ’s sentencing recommendation against political ally Roger Stone, Barr ordered prosecutors to propose “far less” time in prison.

His order was such an abuse of power, all four of the Stone prosecutors withdrew from the case and more than 2,600 former federal officials, myself included, published a letter asking Barr to resign.

Failing institutions:Stone prison term: Will courts hold Trump accountable after Congress, Mueller fall short?

But it was mission accomplished for Trump and Barr. On Thursday, Stone was sentenced to 40 months in prison, substantially less than the seven to nine years requested by the prosecutors.

A similar sequence occurred after Trump expressed unhappiness with the prosecution of former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Prosecutors who had recommended up to six months in prison later said probation would be appropriate. And Barr has now ordered a “reinvestigation” of Flynn’s case, presumably to undermine Flynn’s guilty plea. ...................

Under Trump, America is less prepared for a coronavirus outbreak by Chelsea Clinton and Devi Sridhar

Under Trump, America is less prepared for a coronavirus outbreak

Opinion by Chelsea Clinton and Devi Sridhar Updated 8:03 PM ET, Mon February 24, 2020

...............Two aspects in particular worry us about the White House's response, or lack thereof. We have a President uninterested in global health concerns, broadly disdainful of experts and recently obsessed with and distracted by his impeachment.
Trump has often shown deep ignorance and cruelty on issues of global health. During the Ebola outbreak, when he was still a reality TV host, he said the US should not allow Ebola-infected citizens and aid workers to come back to the US and should let them "suffer the consequences."

He even deliberately spread misinformation, saying Ebola was: "Spreading all over Africa-and fast. Stop flights" and "The U.S. must immediately stop all flights from EBOLA infected countries or the plague will start and spread inside our 'borders.' Act fast!" He said this even though halting flights would bring potentially harmful consequences, like "hindering info-sharing, medical supply chains and harming economies," according to the World Health Organization director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

In 2014-2015 during the Ebola outbreak, his apparent disdain lived largely on Twitter. Now, in addition to sharing his often false opinions on Twitter, he claimed earlier this month that the coronavirus would weaken in the warmer weather despite no evidence to that effect.

The Trump administration is chronically inept at, and seemingly uninterested in, any type of long-term planning, given the numerous positions in government that remain vacant as well as the constant rotation of key cabinet positions and the ad hoc decisions made on the basis of a conversation or Fox News clip.

That posture, colliding with an anti-science and anti-expert bias, has corroded our epidemic preparedness. Columbia University has even tracked more than 400 cases of the Trump administration's efforts to restrict or dismiss scientific research, education or discussion, or the publication or use of scientific information since 2016.

The dissolution of the entire global health security unit and removal of global health security expert Timothy Ziemer from the National Security Council was the final step in a process of undermining one of the Obama administration's key decisions on global health.

The unit monitored epidemics and ensured that public health planning was coordinated within the more traditional security infrastructure. The lack of a clear chain of command for pandemic response is exactly the opposite of what is needed during an outbreak: clear governance, strategic thinking and forward-planning.

Here’s some good news today out of Kentucky courtesy of Amy McGrath’s (D. KY) U.S. Senate campaign:

Two statewide polls conducted last month show the U.S. Senate race in Kentucky is winnable for former Marine combat pilot Amy McGrath against Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

In January, Garin-Hart-Yang conducted a live telephone survey among a representative sample of 802 likely voters (margin of error +3.5%), and Change Research conducted an online survey the following week among 1,281 likely voters (margin of error +2.8%).

Both polls show a strong dissatisfaction with Sen. Mitch McConnell and his vulnerability to Amy McGrath’s candidacy, and highlight a very competitive Senate race, with McGrath and McConnell tied in the Change Research poll and McConnell only up by 3% in the Garin-Hart-Yang poll, well within the margin of error.

Here’s the breakdown:

Garin-Hart-Yang:

Amy McGrath (D) 40%

Mitch McConnell (R) 43%

Brad Barron (L) 5%

Undecided (12%)

Change Research

Amy McGrath (D) 41%

Mitch McConnell (R) 41%

Brad Barron (L). 7%

Undecided 11%

A record number of Kentucky residents are registered to vote as of Jan. 31, Secretary of State Michael Adams (R) announced on Tuesday.

More than 3.4 million Kentuckians are now registered, marking a new high for the state.

................................
In 2019, Kentucky voters ousted Republican Matt Bevin from the governor's mansion, voting for Democrat Andy Beshear. In one of his first acts as governor, Beshear signed an executive order restoring the voting rights to roughly 100,000 nonviolent felons in the state.

A plurality of Democrats believe that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has the best shot at defeating President Trump in November, according to a new national poll.

The latest Morning Consult survey, which was conducted after Sanders’s dominant victory in the Nevada caucuses, found 33 percent of Democrats view Sanders as the best candidate they could put up in a head-to-head matchup against Trump.

Twenty-three percent of Democrats said former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg would do best against Trump, and 18 percent said former Vice President Joe Biden.

.............
.....................
The Morning Consult poll also found Sanders overtaking Biden among black voters nationally for the first time. One-third of black Democratic voters said they support Sanders, compared to 29 percent for Biden.
