GOPers Fume At Republican Colleagues On Senate Intel Over Don Jr Subpoena

Source: TPM

May 9, 2019 7:59 am

Two top GOP lawmakers are not pleased that their colleagues on the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee haven’t let the Russia probe die as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell instructed earlier this week.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) scolded the committee, which is led by Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), for its decision to subpoena Donald Trump Jr. on Tuesday.

“It’s time to move on,” he said in a tweet, just after news broke that the committee wanted to bring the president’s son back to testify. Several Democratic members of the committee have been pushing to review Trump Jr.’s testimony against key findings of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report, specifically his statements about the Trump Tower Moscow deal. In past Senate Intelligence Committee testimony, he claimed he knew very little about the plans.................................

Trump turns shooting migrants into a punchline at Florida rally

“Only in the Panhandle, you can get away with that statement!”
By Aaron Rupar@atrupar May 9, 2019, 10:10am EDT

......................................
Referring to border agents who deal with undocumented border crossers, Trump brought up the possibility of using deadly force, but quickly ruled out the idea, saying he “would never do that.”

“And don’t forget — we don’t let them and we can’t let them use weapons. We can’t,” Trump said. “Other countries do. We can’t. I would never do that. But how do you stop these people? You can’t. There’s—”

Before Trump could finish his thought, a woman in the audience yelled out. While it was unclear exactly what she said during television coverage of the event, numerous eyewitnesses reported she said, “Shoot them!”

Trump apparently found the suggestion amusing. He gestured at the person who yelled and said, “That’s only in the Panhandle, you can get away with that statement. Only in the Panhandle!”

Trump Goes Cold On Bolton Over Venezuela: He Wants To Get Me 'Into A War'

Source: TPM

May 9, 2019 8:39 am

....................

According to administration officials and people close to the White House who spoke to the Post, Trump’s ire is directed at John Bolton primarily over Bolton’s penchant for intervening in other country’s wars.

While Trump jokingly suggested this week that Bolton wants to get him “into a war,” he’s also been complaining that Bolton may have miscalculated Maduro and pushed Trump “into a corner,” in the Post’s words. Despite the irritation, Trump doesn’t plan to oust his national security adviser anytime soon, two senior administration officials told the Post.

This sixth grader wanted to 'go down fighting' so he grabbed a bat during a school shooting

Source: cnn

Updated 8:13 PM ET, Wed May 8, 2019

(CNN)Children burst into tears in sixth-grader Nate Holley's classroom as gunfire erupted at his school Tuesday.

Two people believed to be students at STEM School Highlands Ranch had opened fire in two classrooms in the suburban Denver school.
"It was really chaotic," the 12-year-old said. "Most of the kids didn't know what to do."

Nate said he froze as gunshots shattered a window. A siren rang and someone in his classroom cracked a joke. His teacher shushed the student and moved them behind a desk and then to the closet.

"I had my hand on a metal baseball bat just in case," Nate told CNN's Brooke Baldwin. "'Cause I was gonna go down fighting if I was gonna go down."
Nate's wrenching account is a tragic reminder of what it's like to be a child in the United States in the age of school shootings. .................................

Real estate developers in the 1980’s & 1990’s, more than 30 years ago, were entitled to massive write offs and depreciation which would, if one was actively building, show losses and tax losses in almost all cases. Much was non monetary. Sometimes considered “tax shelter,” ......

FINLAND-US-DIPLOMACY

...........................As for Pompeo, well, he sees the climate crisis as it pertains to the Arctic sea ice as a rare opportunity to get at deposits of those fossil fuels that are at the root of the climate crisis in the first place. Everything's coming up oil wells! From CNN:

"The Arctic is at the forefront of opportunity and abundance," Pompeo said in remarks in Rovaniemi, Finland. "It houses 13 percent of the world's undiscovered oil, 30 percent of its undiscovered gas, an abundance of uranium, rare earth minerals, gold, diamonds, and millions of square miles of untapped resources, fisheries galore...

Of course, fisheries, galore or not, often do not react well to the presence of oil and gas wells, to say nothing of nearby gold and uranium mining. (One might check with some shrimpers in and around Louisiana for details on this.) What in the hell is this man talking about?

Former Bush Ethics Chief Calls for Mnuchin to Release Trump's Tax Returns or Go 'To The Slammer'

Source: Newsweek

By Daniel Moritz-Rabson On 5/7/19 at 4:55 PM EDT

A chief ethics lawyer under President George W. Bush has called for Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to release Donald Trump's tax returns or go to jail.

.....................

....................

Facing mounting pressure from congressional Democrats, the treasury secretary has refused to release Trump's tax returns to Congress.

In a letter sent on Monday to the Democratic chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Mnuchin wrote, "I have determined that the committee's request lacks a legitimate legislative purpose, and pursuant to section 6103, the department is therefore not authorized to disclose the requested returns and return information."

Mnuchin also wrote that the request presented "serious constitutional questions." His refusal to release Trump's tax returns could end up in the Supreme Court.

Critics of Mnuchin's decision not to release the president's financial records have pointed to a 1924 law giving the House Ways and Means chairman the ability to request taxpayer information from the IRS. The legislation says the treasury secretary "shall furnish" the information to Congress.........................

Mnuchin has had more than ample time to comply even if, for some reason, he needed guidance. A vote should have happened yesterday, and he should in jail today. Charles Rettig should be forced to produce the requested documents immediately or face incarceration as well.

USMCA trade deal could cost Georgia produce growers nearly $900 million, report says

Source: cnbc.com

Published 3 hours ago

Key Points

Unless the proposed U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement is changed, it could “cause extensive economic damage to Georgia” and its fresh produce industry, according to a report from the University of Georgia.
“While the deal may be an overall positive for the United States, it exposes U.S. fruit and vegetable growers to a high risk of substantial harm through unfair competition from Mexican imports,” the UGA report said.
The report also said there’s the potential for “catastrophic damage” to Georgia growers from the USMCA, including annual economic losses for the industry that could approach nearly $900 million.

..............................................

.........................................

The report projected annual economic losses to Georgia’s small fruit and vegetable industry under USMCA could be $340 million to nearly $900 million. It also said there could be job losses of about 3,300 to more than 8,600 under the proposed replacement to the 25-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement.

According to the report, Georgia’s blueberries usually have a market presence in Northern states ahead of local producers due to climate advantage. Similarly, it said Georgia’s climate is ideal to grow fall vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, and eggplant...........................

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue was not available for comment. Perdue is a former governor of Georgia and agribusinessman.

But he recently defended the Trump administration deal.

“Not only does USMCA expand market access for commodities and crops, but also the agreement specifically addresses agricultural biotechnology, including new technologies such as gene editing, to support innovation and reduce trade-distorting policies,” Perdue wrote in a guest column this week in the Gazette paper in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.............................................
