This piece originally appeared on TomDispatch.

A new Wild West has taken root not far from Tombstone, Arizona, known to many for its faux-historical reenactments of the old West. We're talking about a long, skinny territory — a geographic gerrymander — that stretches east across New Mexico and down the Texan Rio Grande to the Gulf of Mexico. It also runs west across hundreds of miles of desert to California and the Pacific Ocean. Like the old Wild West, this one is lawless, save for the law of the gun. But that old West was lawless for want of government. This one is lawless because of it.

The Department of Homeland Security, under authority conferred by Congress, has declared more than 50 federal laws inoperable along sections of the U.S. boundary with Mexico, the better to build the border wall that Donald Trump has promised his "base."
Innumerable state laws and local ordinances have also been swept aside. Predictably, the Endangered Species Act is among the fallen. So are the National Historic Preservation Act, the Wilderness Act, laws restricting air and water pollution, and measures protecting wildlife, landscapes, Native American sacred sites, and even caves and fossils.

The new Wild West of the border wall is an authoritarian dreamscape where the boss man faces no limits and no obligations.
It's as though Marshall Wyatt Earp, reborn as an orange-haired easterner with no knowledge of the actual West, were back in charge, deciding who's in and who's out, what goes and what stays.

Prominent on the list of suspended laws is the 1970 National Environmental Policy Act, or NEPA, which, until recently, was the nation's look-before-you-leap conscience. The environmental analyses and impact statements NEPA requires might not force the government to evaluate whether a palisade of 30-foot-high metal posts — bollards in border wall terminology — were really a better way to control drug smuggling than upgrading inspection facilities at ports of entry, where, by all accounts, the vast majority of illegal substances enter the country. They would, however, require those wall builders to figure out in advance a slew of other gnarly questions like: How will wildlife be affected by a barrier that nothing larger than a kangaroo rat can get through? And how much will pumping scarce local water to make concrete draw down shallow desert aquifers?.........................................

Senate Republicans plan speedy Trump trial

01/20/2020 06:00 PM EST

Senate Republicans released their partisan impeachment trial resolution on Monday evening, a blueprint that could result in President Donald Trump’s swift acquittal. ..............

.............Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), said the resolution is a “national disgrace” and it is “clear Senator McConnell is hell-bent on making it much more difficult to get witnesses and documents and intent on rushing the trial through.” Schumer specifically dinged language in the resolution that doesn’t automatically admit the House’s evidence into the trial.

"Senator McConnell is saying he doesn’t want to hear any of the existing evidence, and he doesn’t want to hear any new evidence. A trial where no evidence - no existing record, no witnesses, no documents – isn’t a trial at all — It’s a cover up,” Schumer said.

But it was clear the president and his team were happy with the result.

“We are gratified that the draft resolution protects the [president's] rights to a fair trial, and look forward to presenting a vigorous defense on the facts and the process as quickly as possible, and seeking an acquittal as swiftly as possible,” said Eric Ueland, the White House legislative affairs director.

‘Things happen’: GOP still can’t answer key Trump scandal question

01/20/20 08:00 AM—Updated 01/20/20 12:40 PM Steve Benen

Should an American president be able to solicit foreign interference in U.S. elections with impunity? It’s a question that’s near the center of Donald Trump’s Ukraine scheme. It’s a question that’s been around for months. And it’s a question Republicans still don’t know how to answer.

On ABC News’ This Week, George Stephanopoulos posed the question to Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), who said, “I don’t know that has been actually proven. You know, that’s all in dispute.”

It’s really not. We know this for certain in part because the White House released an official call summary of Trump’s July 25 conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which the American president pressed his counterpart in Kyiv to “look into” Joe Biden. A week after that call summary was released to the public, Trump stood on the South Lawn of the White House and told reporters on camera, “China should start an investigation into the Bidens.” The Republican added soon after, “I would say that President Zelensky, if it were me, I would recommend that they start an investigation into the Bidens.”

Reminded of reality, Shelby suggested Trump’s rhetoric didn’t actually count, because it was “political.” It led to this exchange:

STEPHANOPOULOS: So it’s OK?

SHELBY: I didn’t say it was OK. I said people make them – people do things. Things happen.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, this is the president of the United States.

SHELBY: Well, still the president of the United States is human. And he’s going to make mistakes of judgment and everything else.

The senator added that he doesn’t believe Trump’s controversy “rises to the standard of an impeachable offense.”

It was a little painful to watch the Alabama Republican change direction so frequently, so quickly............................................................

Ex-White House aide describes Trump’s abusive tantrums when he doesn’t get his way: ‘Not normal at all’

Published 6 hours ago on January 19, 2020

.......................

Speaking with host Alex Witt, Omarosa — who wrote an insider’s account of life in the White House after she was unceremoniously fired — said there was little in the new book that surprised her.

Digging into her Oval Office days, the former adviser and longtime Trump associate described the president’s “zero to 200” screaming jags when displeased.

“What is it like when this president has one of his angry fits, gets upset, and [co-panelist] Sam Nunberg is smiling as well so I can ask you both, as it well-represented here in the Washington Post does he go off the rails?” host Witt asked.

“Oh, he does, he goes from zero to 200 over the most trivial things,” Manigault Newman said as she smiled. “He starts to scream, he turns orange-red, he starts to emote, and he doesn’t want you to leave, because everybody wants to kind of edge away. He would have these tantrums and there was no way to calm him down. and then an hour later, he would call you and try to have a normal conversation. It was not normal at all.”

“There is something neurological going on with Donald Trump,” she continued. “I’m not a doctor but I’ll tell you what I observed in 2003 when I first met the man and when I last spoke to him. There is some disconnect with his ability to process basic information
. It’s not that he doesn’t know the basic terminology of the government, of its structure and functions. He makes statements that have an impact around the world; that’s what he doesn’t grasp, his ignorance is destroying our country.”.....................................

Trump is trying Middle East Peace plan 2.0 after the first one flopped

Source: raw story

Published 3 hours ago on January 19, 2020

President Donald Trump is scheduled to submit his second Middle East peace plan after the first one senior son-in-law Jared Kushner came up with didn’t go over very well.

“We will get this done,” Trump claimed in May 2017.

“We’ll start a process which hopefully will lead to peace,” Trump said. “Over the course of my lifetime, I’ve always heard that perhaps the toughest deal to make is the deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians. Let’s see if we can prove them wrong, okay?”

Last summer, Kushner’s peace plan was said to be the “deal of the century.” But it not only fell flat, it drew ridicule for how long it took, how simplistic it was, and how much of a failure the rollout was.

Reverting to his usual level of dishonesty, Trump made 81 false claims last week

Source: cnn

Updated 10:42 AM ET, Sun January 19, 2020

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump made just 15 false claims two weeks ago, a holiday week during which he uttered few public remarks.

He gave fact checkers only a brief respite. Back to Washington and back to doing interviews and campaign rallies, Trump made 81 false claims last week. That is tied for the fifth-highest total in the 27 weeks we have counted at CNN.

It was an eclectic batch of dishonesty. Among other things, Trump took unearned credit for both the Ethiopia-Eritrea peace agreement and for the drop in the US cancer death rate, absurdly claimed that NATO "had no money" before his presidency, wrongly denied that his golf excursions cost taxpayers any money, and repeated his usual varied inaccuracies about impeachment, immigration and the nuclear agreement with Iran.

Trump made 27 of the false claims at his campaign rally in Toledo, Ohio. He made 16 more in a Fox News interview with Laura Ingraham. He made six in his speech on National Environmental Policy Act regulations, plus 10 in his exchange with reporters after the speech.

Trump's total of 81 false claims last week was above his average of about 61 per week. Trump is now up to 1,636 false claims since July 8, an average of about nine per day..........................................

Kansas City Radio Station Agrees To Play Russian Propaganda 6 Hours Per Day

Source: Crooks and Liars

1/19/20 12:06pm

A Kansas City area radio station has agreed to broadcast Russian state-owned media programming, the same outlet that U.S. intelligence called a “propaganda machine,” for six hours a day through a lease agreement struck by a local radio operator, reports The Kansas City Star.
.....................................

The lease agreement lets RM Broadcasting air its programming from 6 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. seven days a week, according to the Star.

KCXL’s website, which touts itself as the radio station that will “tell you the things that the liberal media wont (sic) tell you,” currently lists Radio Sputnik in its morning programming.

A 2017 report by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence that evaluated Russian efforts to influence the 2016 election described Sputnik as “another government-funded outlet producing pro-Kremlin radio and online content in a variety of languages for international audiences.”.............................................
