GOP on defensive over Dem votes on policies geared toward women

Source: the hill

By Cristina Marcos - 03/31/19 10:30 AM EDT

House Republicans are playing defense as Democrats hold votes on a series of measures that could make it more difficult for the GOP to recoup losses with female voters in 2018.

The House on Wednesday approved the Paycheck Fairness Act, which strengthens penalties against employers that discriminate against female workers with lower wages.

And this week, the House is set to vote on a renewal of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) after it expired in late December.

Both measures have been top priorities for Democrats since they took over the House majority, which was fueled in large part by female voters. A Democratic aide said that leaders wanted to vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act ahead of Equal Pay Day on April 2 and to bring up the VAWA renewal soon after it advanced out of the House Judiciary Committee earlier this month.

But the two bills also give Democrats an opportunity to cast the GOP as unfriendly to women on both issues.

"We were put into the majority by the women of this country. And so I think it is only fair as we forge ahead with our 'For the People' agenda that we try to deal with some of these obstacles," said Rep. Lois Frankel (D-Fla.), co-chairwoman of the Democratic Women's Caucus.

Mulvaney: only 'something dramatic' will stop Trump closing Mexico border

US citizens who cross border for work or family fear hardship

At the border, those who frequently cross between countries for work or family reasons worried about the impact on their lives.

A surge of migrants from Central America has increased pressure on border ports of entry, leading to controversy over the way such people are held and treated.

.....................................................

White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney told ABC’s This Week the president had few other options in the absence of support from Democrats for more border security or legislative action to change immigration law.

“Faced with those limitations, the president will do everything he can,” Mulvaney said. “If closing the ports of entry means that, that’s exactly what he intends to do. We need border security and we’re going to do the best we can with what we have.”

Joe Biden Offered 'Expressions Of Affection' But Denies Inappropriate Behavior

Former Vice President Joe Biden on Sunday responded to allegations that he acted inappropriately when he kissed the back of a former Nevada Democratic assemblywoman's head at a campaign event in 2014, saying his behavior has been affectionate but never unseemly.

"In many years on the campaign trail and in public life, I have offered countless handshakes, hugs, expressions of affection, support and comfort. And not once — never — did I believe I acted inappropriately. If it is suggested I did so, I will listen respectfully," Biden said in a statement released by his spokesman on Twitter.

.................Biden's remarks come two days after Lucy Flores, who was running for lieutenant governor at the time of the alleged incident, published an essay about the encounter in New York magazine, and hours before she was set to make several interview appearances on Sunday.

"I may not recall these moments the same way, and I may be surprised at what I hear," Biden said. "But we have arrived at an important time when women feel they can and should relate their experiences, and men should pay attention. And I will."

...........................

"I will fight to build on the work I've done in my career to end violence against women and ensure women are treated with the equality they deserve," Biden said.

"I will continue to surround myself with trusted women advisers who challenge me to see different perspectives than my own. And I will continue to speak out on these vitally-important issues where there is much more progress to be made and crucial fights that must be waged and won."

The statement is the first direct response from Biden to the accusations. Earlier statements came from Russo, who previously said Biden had no memory of the alleged kiss and was unaware that he had made Flores feel uncomfortable. .............................

Reacting to conservative commentators and opinion hosts pushing for an investigation of the investigators following the completion of the Mueller report, Fox News anchor Chris Wallace burst Fox viewers’ bubble Friday, informing them that the Russia investigation did not begin with the infamous Steele dossier.

Following the release of Attorney General William Barr’s four-page summary of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report that said the Trump campaign did not conspire with Russia in its 2016 election interference, Republicans and right-wing media personalities have declared the need to open an investigation into how the Russia probe started, claiming it was part of a Deep State coup to stop Donald Trump. This culminated in conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh ranting to Fox News Thursday about the need for “accountability.”

“They began an investigation based on a phony dossier created and written by associates of Hillary Clinton. It was opposition research,” Limbaugh told Fox News anchor Bret Baier. “This is outrageous what has happened here. There needs to be an investigation into this. There needs to be accountability for everybody who participated in this.”

During Friday morning’s broadcast of America’s Newsroom, Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer highlighted Limbaugh’s remarks while noting that the Department of Justice inspector general is looking into how the FISA warrants were handled by the FBI. Wallace, meanwhile, said there was “one other point” he’d like to make.

Those who recently watched Fox News’ "The Ingraham Angle" may have gotten the wrong idea about whether some North Carolina sheriffs are breaking the law by ignoring detainers issued by immigration authorities.

Host Laura Ingraham on March 20 invited NC House Speaker Tim Moore, a Republican, to talk about a bill proposed by state lawmakers. Some North Carolina sheriffs are refusing to cooperatewith U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but the bill supported by Moore would require cooperation.

Before Ingraham asks Moore a question (around the 21-minute mark of this video), she plays a video clip of a speech by Buncombe County Sheriff Quentin Miller.

"We do not make or enforce immigration laws," Miller says in the video. "That is not part of our law enforcement duties. I will be attacked for this policy directive, maybe even by ICE. However, a detainer request is not a valid warrant.".....................

OUR RULING

Ingraham played a clip of Miller, who said an ICE detainer request "is not a valid warrant." Immediately after Miller’s statement, Ingraham asked Moore to respond and Moore said Miller was wrong. But the court system has mostly ruled that Miller is right. We rate this claim True.

House Oversight renews call to Wilbur Ross for documents on census citizenship question

Source: Politico

By MATTHEW CHOI 03/29/2019 08:16 PM EDT

House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) on Friday urged Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to agree by Monday to provide additional documents detailing why the Trump appointee added a citizenship question to the 2020 census.

Cummings complained in a letter that Ross has repeatedly snubbed the committee on document requests related to the contentious 2020 census question. Despite fierce backlash from the public and judiciary, Ross approved a question in the census asking for respondents' citizenship for the first time in 60 years.

Cummings suggested the committee would consider forcing cooperation by subpoena during the committee's Tuesday meeting if the secretary does not agree to the terms of the letter.

A federal judge ruled in January against asking about respondents' citizenship in the census, arguing doing so could potentially be discriminatory against non-citizens. The question has gone to the Supreme Court, which will hear arguments on the issue early next month.
