Revealed: Amy Coney Barrett supported group that said life begins at fertilization

Source: the guardian

Barrett signed newspaper ad in 2006 sponsored by St Joseph County Right to Life, an extreme anti-choice group

Thu 1 Oct 2020 08.45 EDT

Amy Coney Barrett, the Trump administration’s supreme court nominee, publicly supported an organization in 2006 that has said life begins at fertilization. It has also said that the discarding of unused or frozen embryos created in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process ought to be criminalized, a view that is considered to be extreme even within the anti-abortion movement.

The revelation is likely to lead to new questions about how Barrett’s personal views on abortion may not only shape reproductive rights in the US for decades to come if she is confirmed by the Senate, but how her appointment could affect legal rights for women undergoing fertility treatment, as well as their doctors.
Religious group scrubs all references to Amy Coney Barrett from its website

In 2006, while Barrett worked as a law professor at Notre Dame, she was one of hundreds of people who signed a full-page newspaper advertisement sponsored by St Joseph County Right to Life, an extreme anti-choice group located in the city of South Bend, which is in the region know as Michiana.

The advertisement, which appeared in the South Bend Tribune, stated: “We, the following citizens of Michiana, oppose abortion on demand and defend the right to life from fertilization to natural death. Please continue to pray to end abortion.”

The statement was signed by Barrett and her husband, Jesse.

In an interview with the Guardian, Jackie Appleman, the executive director of St Joseph County Right to Life, said that the organization’s view on life beginning at fertilization – as opposed to the implantation of an embryo or a fetus being viable – did have implications for in vitro fertilization, which usually involves the creation of multiple embryos......................................

And so it begins. damn

NEW: Amy Coney Barrett signed her name to a full-page ad run by a group that says it believes abortion providers should be prosecuted.

This does not appear to have been disclosed in her questionnaire submitted to the Judiciary Committee.

The ad that Barrett signed her name to was actually a two-page spread in the South Bend Tribune, and the full ad specifically calls for "an end to the barbaric legacy of Roe v. Wade".

This is as clear a position as you'll ever see from a judicial nominee.

Here is the full ad:

So she's already being deceitful? Another reason to not be so hasty to appoint her. Seems enough time for vetting is in the best interest of the voters, not the only consideration is that she's a Trump pick. That alone should be a disqualifier.

Can The U.S. Use Its Growing Supply Of Rapid Tests To Stop The Virus?

This will NEVER happen under Trump who believes more testing means more cases means he is more afraid of losing the election.

Coronavirus By The Numbers

Can The U.S. Use Its Growing Supply Of Rapid Tests To Stop The Virus?

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/10/01/915793729/can-the-u-s-use-its-growing-supply-of-rapid-tests-to-stop-the-virus

October 1, 20205:03 AM ET

A new generation of faster, cheaper coronavirus tests is starting to hit the market. And some experts say these technologies could finally give the U.S. the ability to adopt a new, more effective testing strategy.

"On the horizon — the not too distant horizon — there are a whole series of testing modalities coming on line," says Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown School of Public Health. "And that gives us hope we can really expand our testing capacity in the nation."

Until now, testing has been primarily used to diagnose people who may have COVID-19 and any of their close contacts who may also be infected. But a stubborn shortage of the molecular tests most commonly used — and slow turnaround time for results — has hobbled the nation's ability to stop outbreaks and contain the pandemic.

That could change, argue Jha and other public health researchers, as new rapid tests — primarily antigen tests — become more widely available, enabling communities to start widespread screening of the highest-risk people.

"It is a paradigm shift," Jha says. "What I think new testing capacity allows us to do is actually play offense — go and hunt for the disease before it spreads to identify asymptomatic people before they spread it to others. It really becomes about preventing outbreaks — not just capturing them after they've occurred."...........................

........................

That ideal scenario would allow communities to expand regular testing to most K-12 students that are in school (excluding those in communities with a high rate of infection, where schools would be closed); as well as health care workers, food service employees, cashiers and retail store clerks.

Some hospitals forced to wait-list or transfer patients as Wisconsin's coronavirus surge continues

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

A "Heroes work here" sign on display in front of Bellin Hospital on April 18, 2020, in Green Bay, Wis.

Some Wisconsin hospitals are resorting to wait-listing patients, or sending them to other facilities, as the state's coronavirus surge continues to rage.

Hospitals have been especially overwhelmed in Green Bay, Wausau and the Fox Valley, which are among the state's latest COVID-19 hot spots.

Officials at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, for example, said the facility was at 94% capacity as of Tuesday, just days before a Saturday campaign rally for President Donald Trump that could draw thousands of supporters to the city.

State health officials on Tuesday also acknowledged Wisconsin is closer than ever to opening a state-run field hospital due to the surge in cases — even as they stressed they still hope the overflow facilities won't be needed.

The number of people hospitalized in Wisconsin due to the virus reached a new high Tuesday, with 646 coronavirus patients occupying beds across the state, including 205 patients in ICU beds.............................

MILWAUKEE — Wisconsin set a new record for COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday and the surge in cases in the state threatened to overwhelm some hospitals.

Health officials reported 27 new deaths, breaking the state’s old record of 22 deaths set on May 27. The disease has killed or played a role in the death of 1,327 people in the state since the pandemic began.

Health officials reported 2,319 newly confirmed cases, bringing the total number of cases in Wisconsin to 122,274 since the pandemic began.

Wisconsin had the third-highest positivity rate of any state as of Wednesday. Hospital officials in some areas said they were close to being overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients — a scenario that health officials have been warning could happen since the pandemic began but that only now seems like it could happen..............................

Coronavirus Wednesday update: 16 more Minnesota deaths, 689 new cases

Source: Pioneer Press

Most daily fatalities reported since August

Pioneer Press UPDATED: September 30, 2020 at 5:36 p.m.

Labor Day celebrations and students going back to school are partly to blame for Minnesota’s recent surge in coronavirus cases, but a major source remains residents who disregard public health rules.

Community transmission, when someone gets sick without an obvious source of the infection, accounts for about one-third of recent coronavirus cases and roughly a quarter of all Minnesota infections. In the past week, Minnesota added about 128 new coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents, compared with about 87 cases per 100,000 in late July.

Community transmission can be reduced if people wear masks, keep their distance from others and avoid large gatherings. But lax compliance throughout the summer and fall has created an infection “ripple effect.”

The holiday weekend and start of a new school year contributed to coronavirus spread, she said, but community transmission seeded by gatherings and events continues to be a key driver of the outbreak......................................

Moderna CEO says its coronavirus vaccine won't be ready until spring of next year

Source: cbs news

Updated on: September 30, 2020 / 5:41 PM / MoneyWatch

Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel said Wednesday that his company's coronavirus vaccine won't be ready for widespread public distribution until spring of next year, according to a report. The drugmaker also won't seek emergency authorization for the vaccine for frontline medical workers and other at-risk individuals until November 25 at the earliest, he told the Financial Times.

Speaking at a health conference on Wednesday, Bancel said Moderna would not be ready to seek Food and Drug Administration approval for the vaccine for use in the general population until at least late January. If the vaccine is proven to be safe and effective, approval is unlikely until late March or early April.
................

..................

The timeline is a setback for Moderna, which said earlier this month that it could seek emergency authorization for a vaccine as soon as November 1. It also deals a blow to claims by President Donald Trump, which he repeated on Tuesday in his debate with Joe Biden, that a vaccine could be ready in a matter of weeks, or before the November 3 presidential election.

"We're weeks away from a vaccine," Mr. Trump said on Tuesday night during the.........

Trump Family Goes Without Masks to Presidential Debate, Disregarding Guidelines

Source: daily beast

Published Sep. 29, 2020 9:36PM ET

The majority of President Donald Trump’s family sat in the audience at the first presidential debate without masks despite rules requiring that attendees wear them as a precaution against the new coronavirus. Moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News announced at the debate’s outset that doctors from the nearby Cleveland Clinic had formulated guidance to protect those present, namely requiring masks and forbidding cheering. Despite the guidelines, Eric, Tiffany, Ivanka, and Donald Trump, Jr. sat front row without the face coverings. Melania Trump did wear a mask. By contrast, those in the front row of the Democratic side appeared to have donned masks.

Trump doesn't denounce white supremacists and militias during debate

Trump called on Proud Boys to "stand by," when pressed by moderator.

September 29, 2020, 11:02 PM

President Donald Trump was given a chance during the first presidential debate to denounce white supremacists and militias that have been responsible for incidents of violence and death at rallies during the last few months.

Instead, he deflected and told one of those groups to, "stand back and stand by."

Moderator Chris Wallace brought up the militias and hate groups during the part of the debate focused on "law and order," and asked the president if he would call on those groups to end their violence. During an Aug. 25 protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, following the shooting of Jacob Blake, an Illinois teen who was allegedly part of a militia, shot three protesters, killing two, according to police.

Militia groups have also been accused of attacking protesters in Portland, Oregon, over the summer.............................................................
