U.S. coronavirus death toll tops 300,000 on the day vaccine arrives

More than 300,000 people have now died from the coronavirus in the United States, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The milestone comes as the first Americans are receiving Pfizer's newly authorized coronavirus vaccine, which the nation hopes will turn the tables in the fight against the virus.

The vaccine's arrival comes at a time of crisis. The U.S. has set records for COVID-19 hospitalizations eight days in a row, and the number of patients requiring intensive care is up 80% from a month ago.

In California's Los Angeles County, new COVID-19 cases are up 370% in just one month — and there are no ICU beds left in the state's Central Valley. In New Jersey, which currently has the highest COVID-19 death rate in the nation, Governor Phil Murphy warned that the coming weeks "are going to be hell."

Former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb warned Sunday that coronavirus infections will likely peak in January, due in part to Americans ignoring warnings from health officials and traveling during the holiday season.

"The pressure is going to be on the health care system, and we need to keep the health care system from getting maxed out," Gottlieb said in an interview with "Face the Nation." "They're not going to see peak-burden on hospital resources probably until mid-January, late January."..............................

U.S. surpasses 300,000 coronavirus deaths

https://www.axios.com/coronavirus-covid-deaths-us-3b926c93-ee13-4c78-b11f-ead8b12de7f5.html

The U.S. topped 300,000 coronavirus deaths on Monday, per Johns Hopkins data.

The big picture: The U.S. is averaging 2,427 deaths a day — 300 more fatalities per day than during the pandemic's initial peak in the spring, per the COVID Tracking Project. It took less than three months for the U.S. to record another 100,000 deaths.......................................
.......................

The bottom line: If the U.S. death rate had matched that of other wealthy countries, between about 55,000 and 215,000 Americans would still be alive, an October analysis by Columbia University's National Center for Disaster Preparedness found..............................................

Gov. DeSantis suggests one dose of Pfizer vaccine may be enough

Gov. DeSantis suggests one dose of Pfizer vaccine may be enough

The government is allocating the vaccination on a per capita basis.

Gov. Ron DeSantis just a few days ago said that Americans need to unify behind the science that has led to the rapid development of vaccines. So it was a bit strange that DeSantis on Friday said that perhaps the number of Florida residents who receive COVID-19 vaccinations could be boosted — by not following Pfizer Inc.’s recommended instructions for its vaccine candidate.

The federal government is imminently expected to announce its approval of Pfizer’s vaccine candidate and, within 24 hours of approval, begin shipping the vaccine to Florida and other states. DeSantis said Florida will receive less of the supply than what was initially anticipated, so he came up with a possible way to stretch out the state’s inoculations.

Instead of giving two doses, as recommended by the pharmaceutical manufacturer, to high-risk populations such as nursing home residents and front-line hospital workers, perhaps one dose could do, the Governor suggested Friday.

DeSantis pointed to an article in The Wall Street Journal — it was an opinion piece written by neuroscientist Michael Segal — about the efficacy of the one-dose approach. DeSantis referred to the second dose as a “booster” shot, echoing Segal’s choice of words.

Wisconsin Supreme Court in rare Saturday session for Trump election case

Source: Chicago Tribune

Dec 12, 2020 at 12:07 PM

MADISON, WIS. — With time running out, and on the heels of a stinging defeat in the U.S. Supreme Court, President Donald Trump’s attorneys turned their attention to Wisconsin with rare Saturday arguments before the state Supreme Court.

Trump is trying to overturn his loss to Democrat Joe Biden in the state with a lawsuit seeking to disqualify more than 221,000 votes in Wisconsin’s two most heavily Democratic counties. Trump is not challenging any votes in counties he won.

Also Saturday, former Trump campaign attorney Sidney Powell asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear a federal case she lost in Wisconsin seeking to order the GOP-controlled Legislature to declare Trump the winner. Powell has also lost similar cases in Georgia and Arizona.

Wisconsin’s highest court agreed to take the case at Trump’s urgent request Friday, soon after a state judge ruled against him and with Monday’s Electoral College vote bearing down and the state’s 10 electoral votes about to go to Biden.

The court is controlled 4-3 by conservatives, but its willingness to take the case isn’t necessarily an indicator of how it will rule. The court previously refused to hear the case before it went through lower courts, and a majority of justices have openly questioned whether the remedy Trump seeks is appropriate.

Trump lawsuit in Wisconsin is thrown out in a fifth adverse ruling for the president in a little ove

Trump lawsuit in Wisconsin is thrown out in a fifth adverse ruling for the president in a little over a week

A state judge concluded Wisconsin's election was conducted properly Friday, dealing President Donald Trump and his allies their fifth legal defeat in a little over a week.

"There is no credible evidence of misconduct or wide-scale fraud," Reserve Judge Stephen Simanek said.

Simanek issued his decision from the bench 73 hours before the Electoral College is to meet Monday to officially deliver the presidency to Democrat Joe Biden. Wisconsin's slate of 10 electors for Biden has already been certified, and Simanek's decision upheld that finding.

Over the last week, courts in Wisconsin have thrown out four other lawsuits brought by Trump and his backers.

And after a daylong hearing Thursday, U.S. District Judge Brett Ludwig said he thought Trump might have taken too long to file yet another lawsuit. Ludwig is expected to rule in that case by Saturday.

The ruling came as Republicans in the state Legislature took testimony from partisans who criticized how the election was conducted. But among those who testified was Dean Knudson, a Republican on the state Elections Commission who, like Simanek, said there was no evidence of extensive voter fraud.....................................

Trump's Acting director--Tony Pham, of ICE to step down at the end of December

Short story-nothing else.

Acting director of ICE to step down at the end of December

By Priscilla Alvarez, CNN Updated 9:12 PM ET, Thu December 10, 2020

(CNN)....................

Tony Pham, who assumed the post in August, called his time at ICE "the single highest honor of my career" in a statement on Thursday.

"I am grateful for the Trump Administration for providing me the single highest honor of my career in serving my adopted country as both the Principal Legal Advisor and the Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Director at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement," he said.

.............................
................... However, at the end of the year, I will be returning home to Richmond, VA to be closer to my family."

While serving as acting chief of ICE, Pham traveled around the country singling out so-called sanctuary cities and signed off on putting up controversial billboards in the key swing state of Pennsylvania about immigration violators in the ramp-up to the presidential election....

We apologize to our readers for endorsing Michael Waltz in the 2020 general election for Congress.

We had no idea, had no way of knowing at the time, that Waltz was not committed to democracy.
...............................

Our bad.
................

Waltz, to our horror, was one of the nine Florida Republican members of Congress who, on Thursday, signed up to support a lawsuit brought by Texas in the U.S. Supreme Court that’s attempting to throw out the election results in Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania — all states where Donald Trump lost to Joe Biden.

Instead, Texas is arguing those states’ legislatures — which conveniently are controlled by Republicans — should appoint a slate of electors to the Electoral College.
.................................

Trump’s own lawyers have admitted before judges that their cases aren’t about fraud. U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr said the Department of Justice hadn’t uncovered anything that would alter the election’s outcome.
