Democratic Senators Manchin and Sinema WON'T back changing filibuster to codify abortion: Biden's plan to protect Roe in Congress looks dead in the water after criticizing 'outrageous' and 'destabilizing' Supreme Court

Biden said he would support a filibuster carve-out to pass legislation protecting abortion rights
Manchin's and Sinema's offices told DailyMail.com the president's comments did not change their positions

'One thing that has been destabilizing is the outrageous behavior of the Supreme Court,' he said

Rights previously protected in Roe v. Wade, he said, should be codified into law

He also hinted at executive action to come on abortion rights: I'm going to do everything in my power, which I legally can do in terms of executive orders'
Biden also said he would be meeting with US governors to discuss the the issue on Friday
He flew out of Madrid on Thursday afternoon at the end of a six-day trip to Europe that included a G7 summit

Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema remain steadfast in their defense of the filibuster, their offices said, despite public pressure from all the way up to President Biden.

Manchin's office told DailyMail.com that the West Virginia Democrat's position had not changed in light of the president's new comments, and Sinema's office referred DailyMail.com to a statement the Arizona Democrat made after the leaked Supreme Court decision: 'Protections in the Senate safeguarding against the erosion of women's access to health care have been used half-a-dozen times in the past ten years, and are more important now than ever.'

In new comments during a press conference in Madrid on Thursday Biden said he would back an exception to the filibuster to pass federal abortion legislation and blasted the Supreme Court's 'outrageous' repealing of Roe v. Wade...........................................................

Texas AG Ken Paxton says he's "willing and able" bring back state ban on gay sex

"They won't stop till they roll back all of our civil rights," Paxton's Democratic challenger said
By Alex Henderson

Civil libertarians have been warning that if Roe v. Wade was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, other civil liberties would be in danger as well. And sure enough, when the High Court announced, on Friday, June 24, that it was overturning Roe, Justice Clarence Thomas recommended that the Court "reconsider" some landmark right-to-privacy decisions on contraception and gay rights.

One of the cases that Thomas specially mentioned was Lawrence v. Texas, a 2003 ruling that struck down a sodomy law in the Lone Star State and, by extension, similar laws in other states. Now, far-right Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is indicating that he is open to the possibility of criminalizing gay sex in Texas once again if Lawrence is ever overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Sydney, Australia's 9News reports that when Paxton, during an interview, was asked if he would be willing to take a challenge to Lawrence v. Texas to the U.S. Supreme Court, he indicated that he would. And Paxton also indicated that he would enforce Texas' old sodomy law if Lawrence were overturned.......................

...............

When the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its 6-3 Lawrence ruling in 2003, Thomas was among the three dissenters; the other two were the late Justice Antonin Scalia and then-Chief Justice William Rehnquist. The majority opinion in Lawrence was written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, a right-wing libertarian and Ronald Reagan appointee who was a strong supporter of right-to-privacy decisions — and Kennedy, in Lawrence, used the right-to-privacy framework that had been a part of not only Roe, but also, other U.S. Supreme Court decisions such as 1965's Griswold v. Connecticut (which established access to contraception as a constitutionally protected right for married couples), 1969's Stanley v. Georgia and 1972's Eisenstadt v. Baird (which expanded Griswold to unmarried couples)....................................

Democrats' lose grip on Senate while Leahy recovers from fall

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - .......................

...................

Leahy, who is third in line to the U.S. presidency given his role as Senate president pro tempore, broke his hip at his house in the northern Virginia suburbs outside Washington, his office said on Thursday, adding that he is expected to make a full recovery.

"Having been born blind in one eye, the Senator has had a lifelong struggle with reduced depth perception. He has taken some remarkable dingers over the years but this one finally caught up with him," his office said in a statement.

While Leahy has said he will not seek re-election in the Nov. 8 midterm elections, his vote is critical in the 50-50 split Senate where Democratic U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris holds the tie-breaking vote.

Democrats are seeking to maintain their hold on the chamber in November, and the seat Leahy has held since 1974 is still seen as leaning Democratic...................

I wish Leahy well but it takes a long time to heal elderly bones. I know--my very elderly mom took a tumble a few years back, it was a summer of nothing but problems for her.. Yes. she has recovered and is toddling around the house with her walker.

The billionaire blocking off Montana's wildlife: 'Like fencing people out of Walmart'

The billionaire blocking off Montana’s wildlife: ‘Like fencing people out of Walmart’

The fences Joe Ricketts erected around his ranch in the middle of the Blackfeet reservation are a deadly hazard for wildlife

Almost immediately after their new billionaire neighbor put up miles of 5ft fences around his Montana ranch, complaints started coming in to the Blackfeet tribe.

In photos and videos captured by Blackfeet tribal members and reviewed by the Guardian, animals such as elk, deer, moose and grizzly bears can be seen struggling to navigate around or over the fences as they follow a historical migration path. Sometimes, they are trapped in corners of the fences, or wounded and limping after failed attempts to jump over the barriers. On numerous occasions, mother moose have been seen separated from their young.

“It would be like fencing people out of Walmart,” says Buzz Cobell, the director of the Blackfeet fish and wildlife department and Blackfeet tribal member. “It wouldn’t take long for people to start screaming bloody murder.”

The fences are owned by the founder of the financial services firm TD Ameritrade, Joe Ricketts, and they enclose his commercial bison ranch, Grizzly Ridge Bison Ranch. It’s a sprawling 32,000-acre property on Blackfeet reservation land. Tribal members complain that Ricketts is a terrible neighbor, failing in his responsibility to work with the tribe to keep wildlife safe.

Yet the existence of Grizzly Ridge Bison Ranch is a reminder of a brutal history. The ranch is a byproduct of the 1887 Dawes Act, an anti-Indigenous piece of legislation that aimed to break up tribal land and assimilate tribes into western private property ideologies. The law allowed the US government to divide reservations into parcels of land and allot it to tribal members and non-tribal homesteaders, breaking up both the land and the communal living traditions that are fundamental in Native communities.

As a result of the Dawes Act, tribes ultimately lost control of two-thirds, or 90m acres, of the original land designated for tribal reservations. Such land is still considered part of the reservation but is not owned or managed by the tribe. Many tribes across the US, including the Blackfeet Nation, are making concerted efforts to buy this land back........................................................................

Nearly 290 people were aboard an Amtrak train when it derailed in Missouri Monday and among them were two Boy Scout troops heading home to Wisconsin from New Mexico, the Boy Scouts of America confirmed to “Good Morning America.”

Members of Troops 12 and 73 of Boy Scouts of America Bay-Lakes Council in the Appleton, Wisconsin, area were riding along with 251 other passengers when their train struck a dump truck in Mendon, Missouri, and derailed at approximately 12:42 p.m. local time. The two troops included 16 children between the ages of 14 and 17 and eight adult leaders, according to Scott Armstrong, the director of national media relations for the Boy Scouts of America.

“I got alerted from the Council in Wisconsin of the accident and was immediately contacted as well by Roger Hoyt who's the general manager of Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, which is where the scouts spent the last 10 days or so hiking the high desert mountains in New Mexico on an adventure of a lifetime frankly, and they got a little more adventure than they bargained for on the way home with a train derailment yesterday,” Armstrong told “GMA.”...................................

Allies of former President Donald Trump have tried to intimidate people with knowledge of what was going on inside the White House around the time of the Capitol attack, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) revealed Tuesday at the conclusion of a shocking congressional hearing.

Cheney, who serves as vice chair of the House committee investigating the attack, said the panel commonly asks its witnesses whether anyone has contacted them for the purpose of influencing their testimony.

At least two said yes. Cheney shared their experiences while shielding their identities.

“What they said to me is, ‘As long as I continue to be a team player, they know that I’m on the team, I’m doing the right thing, I’m protecting who I need to protect, you know, I’ll continue to stay in good graces in Trump World,’” she said one witness told the committee. “And they have reminded me a couple of times that Trump does read transcripts and just to keep that in mind as I proceeded through my depositions and interviews with the committee.”

Another witness received a veiled threat over the phone.

Republicans Sought To Undo Lifetime Gun Ban For Misdemeanor Domestic Violence

Source: huff post

The new gun law closes the "boyfriend loophole," but dating partners convicted of domestic violence can get their guns back after five years. Convicted spouses can't.

WASHINGTON .....................

....................

Prior to the deal becoming law on Saturday, federal restrictions banned gun ownership for those convicted of a domestic violence misdemeanor against a spouse or intimate partner with whom they lived or shared a child, but did not include dating partners.

The final compromise bill closed the so-called boyfriend loophole, but it came with a catch: After a five-year period, the convicted person can get their gun rights back so long as they avoid committing another violent crime during that time.

The conditional five-year limit on the abuser gun ban was a key concession by Democrats in order to secure Republican support for closing the loophole, a longtime goal of gun safety advocates that Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) championed in the negotiations.

Republicans wanted to create a way for spouses and other intimate partners to get their guns back, too. But a source familiar with the negotiations described that as a “no go” for Democrats. ..........................................

Trump Knew Supporters Had Weapons On Jan. 6 But Didn't Care, Top Aide Testifies

Former President Donald Trump said he didn't "f-ing care" that supporters had weapons before the Capitol riot.

Former President Donald Trump knew his supporters were armed with weapons during the Jan 6, 2021, Capitol attack, but insisted they be allowed to watch him speak before the riot.

“I don’t f-ing care that they have weapons,” Trump said, according to testimony from a former top White House aide. “They’re not here to hurt me. Take the f-ing mags [metal detectors] away. Let my people in.”

The new explosive testimony came from former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson during a surprise hearing on Tuesday. Hutchinson recalled that Trump had been informed by Secret Service that his supporters had brought weapons to his rally shortly before the attack on the Capitol. Those weapons included bear spray, spears, guns and flagpoles used as weapons.

Trump, however, was apparently fixated on the crowd size and demanded more of his supporters be allowed to bypass metal detectors to watch him speak, Hutchinson testified.

Trumps ego was all that mattered. Trump did not care if others--Congresscritters may get hurt. Only he mattered and his crowd size!!
