Biden marks International Transgender Day of Visibility by blasting Republicans targeting trans youth

President Joe Biden is using International Transgender Day of Visibility on Friday to sharply criticize acts of violence and discrimination against Americans who identify as trans and nonbinary, zeroing in on the growing number of Republican-led bills targeting trans youth.
In a presidential proclamation on Thursday and a subsequent statement on Friday, Biden acknowledged “a wave of discriminatory state laws” aimed at trans Americans, squarely blaming “MAGA extremists” for “advancing hundreds of hateful and extreme state laws that target transgender kids and their families.”
“Let me be clear: These attacks are un-American and must end,” Biden said in his statement issued on Friday. “The bullying, discrimination, and political attacks that trans kids face have exacerbated our national mental health crisis.”

The president’s comments came as an unprecedented number of measures have been introduced in state legislatures this year seeking to restrict LGBTQ rights. The proposed bills cover a wide range of policies, including some that seek to restrict transgender people from competing on sports teams or using bathrooms that align with their gender identity. Youth and medical care is a growing legislative focus.
At least 385 bills targeting LGBTQ rights and queer life have been introduced around the country through March 7...............................................

Republicans are stepping up their war against Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg as he considers charges against Donald Trump.
House speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has already called for committees to delve into Bragg's investigation of Trump's hush money payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels, and GOP lawmakers are weighing subpoenas for the county prosecutor to testify about his probe, reported The Daily Beast.
“It is pretty clearly a wrongful persecution of a free American citizen who happens to be the former president of the United States,” Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) told the website. “Because of those circumstances, I think it’s appropriate for Congress to inquire into what drove that decision making process for Bragg."
Higgins suggested that Republicans would coordinate their timing on a potential Bragg subpoena with the former president's legal team to avoid interfering with their defense.................................

“Following her visit to Ohio today to meet with military families, the First Lady will travel to Nashville, Tennessee to join a candlelight vigil to honor and mourn the lives of the victims of The Covenant School shooting,” Biden spokesperson Vanessa Valdivia said in a tweet.
The first lady’s visit will mark the first in-person overture from the White House to the grieving community. It holds additional significance given Dr. Biden’s lifelong work as an educator.

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden said the White House was working through what kind of visit “helps the most.” President Biden has spoken with local officials, including Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, Nashville Mayor John Cooper, Tennessee Sen. Bill Hagerty, and Nashville Police Chief John Drake. The president also spoke with the two officers who charged into the school and killed the shooter – Metro Police Officers Michael Collazo and Rex Engelbert.
The first lady has traveled to the sites of mass shootings in the past, including meeting with families who lost children in the massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, last May. She has also reflected on what teachers and students endure at a time when active shooter training has become standard practice in many schools.
“As a teacher, I’ve imagined that scene in my own classroom, again and again,” Dr. Biden said last year at the National Parent Teachers Association’s 125th Anniversary Convention. “At the start of each semester, I’m sure all of you in here who are teachers do this, you explain to your students on the first day a path, a pathway, to get out if a shooter comes into the school so that they’re prepared.” ...............................

Guns are the leading cause of death for US children and teens, since surpassing car accidents in 2020.
Firearms accounted for nearly 19% of childhood deaths (ages 1-18) in 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wonder database. Nearly 3,600 children died in gun-related incidents that year. That’s about five children lost for every 100,000 children in the United States. In no other comparable country are firearms within the top four causes of mortality among children, according to a KFF analysis.
Children are more likely to be killed by a gun than in a car accident
Firearms have been the leading cause of death for US children and teens since 2020, representing 19% of all deaths for children 18 years and younger in 2021.
