Wildfires in Anchorage? Climate change sparks disaster fears

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Research on a flat spot for air evacuations. Talk of old-style civil defense sirens to warn of fast-moving wildfires. Hundreds of urban firefighters training in wildland firefighting techniques while snow still blankets the ground.
This is the new reality in Alaska’s largest city, where a recent series of wildfires near Anchorage and the hottest day on record have sparked fears that a warming climate could soon mean serious, untenable blazes in urban areas — just like in the rest of the drought-plagued American West.
The risk is particularly high in the city’s burgeoning Anchorage Hillside neighborhood, where multi-million dollar homes have pushed further and further up steep slopes and to the forest’s edge. Making the challenge even greater is that many of these areas on the Hillside — home to about 35,000 people — have but one road in and out, meaning that fleeing residents could clog a roadway or be cut off from reaching Anchorage at all.
The prospect of a major wildfire there keeps Anchorage Fire Chief Doug Schrage awake at night when conditions are hot and dry.
“I’ve characterized this as probably the single largest threat to the municipality of Anchorage,” he said............................................................

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) says climate change will be good for the U.S. because it will be less cold: "Global warming will actually be beneficial ... Why wouldn't we take comfort in that? ... Y'know, concerned if you're in the hot region of Africa ... but we're in good shape."

Student charged after teacher grazed when gun discharged at West High School

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Authorities are investigating after a teacher was “grazed” when a firearm discharged in a classroom at West High School on Friday, according to the Knoxville Police Department. KPD later released that one student was charged.
Knoxville Police say the student charged was identified as a 14-year-old male, however, his identity was withheld because he is a juvenile.
According to police, the gun was inside the backpack of a student at West High School when it discharged in a classroom, according to a Knoxville Police preliminary investigation.

A student is in police custody and the gun is accounted for. Knoxville Police says the student was charged with reckless endangerment, reckless aggravated assault and possession of a weapon on school grounds. Florida doctors and insurers could soon opt-out of performing or paying for medical services if they believe it violates their religious, ethical or moral beliefs.
The bill ensures medical professionals and insurers will be held harmless both professionally and legally if they opt-out from participating in or paying for a health care service due to their belief it violates their religious, moral or ethical conscience.
“This bill screams, reeks of discrimination,” State Senator Tracie Davis (D-Jacksonville) said while debating the bill on the Senate floor Friday......................
