The 12 races that will decide the Senate majority
The November election is 137 days away. But we now have a very clear idea of what the Senate landscape -- the playing field on which the battle for control will take place -- is going to look like.
Primaries have, largely, sorted themselves out in the most competitive Senate races in the country with Republicans -- so far -- avoiding the perils of 2010 and 2012 in which the party nominated a number of candidates who had major electability problems in the general election. The recently concluded Iowa primary gave Republicans their strongest nominee and the Georgia primary produced two runoff participants without the general election baggage of some of the GOP candidates in the running.
What we are left with is 12 races that can be considered truly competitive -- meaning that either one (or both) of the national parties and/or the various outside groups have or will spend money in them. The races are tipped heavily toward Democratic-held seats; 10 of the 12 contests -- including the six most vulnerable -- are currently in Democratic hands. Of the 12 states, Mitt Romney carried nine of them in 2012 -- with Michigan, Iowa and Colorado the trio that went for President Obama.
Republicans insist the playing field is actually 14 not 12 -- adding Minnesota and Oregon to the list. We remain unconvinced that Republican challengers in either of those Democratic-leaning seats have shown the ability to make the races genuinely competitive just yet. Similarly, Democratic optimism in Mississippi seem overly optimistic to us -- even if state Sen. Chris McDaniel ousts Sen. Thad Cochran in the GOP runoff next Tuesday.

Justice Sotomayor: Inequality Could Trigger 'Unrest' In U.S.In a conversation on civil rights on Thursday, Surpeme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor offered an ominous forecast for America amid ever-rising income inequality.
Addressing the American Constitution Society in Washington, Sotomayor warned that [a]s the wealth difference grows, were going to see, I suspect, many of the problems other countries have, the unrest other countries have, the National Law Journal reported Thursday.
The remark was a response to her fellow speaker, civil rights leader Theodore Shaw, who said that preserving America's social mobility is one of the most, if not the most, challenging issues of the 21st century.
Sotomayor listed factors contributing to the country's wealth gap, focusing particularly on the rising cost of education: "[T]heres a lot more of kids across the spectrum who no longer have the hope to attend the schools we did.

REPORT: OFFSHORE SHELL GAMES 2014
The Use of Offshore Tax Havens by Fortune 500 Companies
RELEASED BY: U.S. PIRG ED FUND & CITIZENS FOR TAX JUSTICE
Executive Summary:
Many large U.S.-based multinational corporations avoid paying U.S. taxes by using accounting tricks to make profits made in America appear to be generated in offshore tax havens countries with minimal or no taxes. By booking profits to subsidiaries registered in tax havens, multinational corporations are able to avoid an estimated $90 billion in federal income taxes each year. These subsidiaries are often shell companies with few, if any employees, and which engage in little to no real business activity.
Congress has left loopholes in our tax code that allow this tax avoidance, which forces ordinary Americans to make up the difference. Every dollar in taxes that corporations avoid by using tax havens must be balanced by higher taxes on individuals, cuts to public investments and public services, or increased federal debt.
This study examines the use of tax havens by Fortune 500 companies in 2013. It reveals that tax haven use is ubiquitous among Americas largest companies, but a narrow set of companies benefit disproportionately.
