PARIS (AP) The man behind a deadly knife attack in central Paris was born in Chechnya and had been on police radar for radicalism, and his parents have been detained for questioning, French authorities said Sunday.
Counterterrorism investigators are working to determine whether the man who stabbed five people in a busy neighborhood in the heart of the French capital Saturday night had any help. The attacker killed a 29-year-old man and wounded four others, before being shot by police.
Among the injured was a 34-year-old man from Luxembourg, the foreign ministry of the small country north of France said in a statement. After emergency treatment, he was out of danger.
Witnesses reported hearing the man shouting Allahu akbar, the Arabic phrase for God is great, during the attack. The Islamic State group claimed the attacker was one of its fighters, but provided no evidence or details about his identity.

Trump Appointee Ran Charity That Donated to Middle Eastern Terrorist Group
by Colin Kalmbacher | 1:57 pm, May 12th, 2018
President Donald Trumps hand-picked ambassador to Israel was the president of a charity when it allegedly donated tens of thousands of dollars to a far-right terrorist group based in the Middle East.
According to a Friday report by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, David Friedman led the American Friends of Bet El Yeshiva Center (also known as American Friends of Bet El Institutions) when it donated some $12,000 to the Qomemiyut Movement, a U.S. State Department-designated terrorist organization more commonly known by its prior name, Kahane Chai.
An article in Israels paper of record, Haaretz, pegged the amount of funds donated by Friedmans group to Qomemiyut quite a bit higher: roughly $93,000 between 2008 and 2013. The payments were originally noted by anti-racist Israeli NGO Democratic Bloc.
Based on the ideology and personality cult of anti-Arab Rabbi Meir Kahane, Kahane Chai and its associated fellow travelers support de jure and de facto discrimination against Arabs living in Israel, the revocation of Israeli citizenship for those not of Jewish descent and a ban on Jewish-Gentile intermarriage and sexual relations, in line with a fundamentalist interpretation of scripture.
On February 25, 1994, Baruch Goldstein, a friend and political adherent of Kahanes, opened fire on dozens of Palestinian Muslims while they were praying inside of the Ibrahimi Mosque at the Cave of the Patriarchs in the city of Hebron. Goldsteins assault took 29 lives and wounded 125 othersincluding many childrenbefore he was beaten to death by survivors. Kahanes movement expressed support for this attack and was subsequently outlawed in Israel.
After being outlawed as a political party, the group turned to terrorism and has been on the U.S. State Departments official list of terrorist organizations since 1997 where it is listed as the Qomemiyut Movement. In 2013, when Qomemiyut was clearly listed as a terrorist group on that same government watch list, Friedmans organization made the $12,000 donationin shekelimto the group.

Salmonella sickens nearly three dozen people following recall of more than 200 million eggs
Source: The Washington Post
By Kristine Phillips May 12 at 2:05 PM
A salmonella outbreak that led to a recall of nearly 207 million eggs has now sickened nearly three dozen people in states along the East Coast.
Thirty-five people up by 12 over the past few weeks have been sickened by Salmonella braenderup, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week. The outbreak, which has been traced to a single egg producer, has resulted in 11 hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported.
In April, Rose Acre Farms recalled its products after federal officials tied the illnesses to the company's facility in North Carolina, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said. The recalled eggs were sold under brand names such as Great Value, Country Daybreak and Crystal Farms. They were also sold to Waffle House restaurants and Food Lion stores. (Click here for a full list of brands and stores.)
An investigation by federal officials led to an inspection of the farms facility in Hyde County, N.C., which produces 2.3 million eggs a day from 3 million hens. Eggs produced at the farm are distributed to retail stores and restaurants in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the Carolinas. Illnesses have been reported in all of the states, the majority of which were from New York and Virginia, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Nobel-Winning Doctors' Group Denounces Trump Pharma Plan
Caroline Orr
May 12, 2018 5:17 am
The international medical humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) slammed Trumps speech on prescription drug prices Friday, using the White Houses own words to savage the sham proposal.
In a statement, MSF said Trumps proposed plan to address prescription drug costs fails to address the root problem of rising prices and could make medicine unaffordable for the worlds most vulnerable populations while still not reducing costs in the U.S.
The group also hit back at Trumps suggestion that drug prices in the U.S. are high because other countries arent paying their fair share a suggestion that mirrors Trumps misguided statements about NATO members.
Other countries arent free-riding, and lifesaving medicines arent more expensive here because they cost less elsewhere, MSF said.

Russian companies to benefit from US Iran withdrawal
Source: Agence France-Presse
12 MAY 2018
While Russia has condemned Washington for its withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, Moscow remains less exposed to the economic consequences of US sanctions than Europe and its companies could even benefit from the move.
"The deal and the lifting of sanctions in 2015 marked the return of European business to Iran. But it's unlikely they can keep doing business today, giving room to Russia," said independent political scientist Vladimir Sotnikov.
"Russia can now go ahead at full speed," he added.
Russia and Iran once had difficult relations, but have seen ties improve since the end of the Cold War.

By Allegra Kirkland | May 12, 2018 2:14 pm
White House budget director Mick Mulvaney said Saturday that a communication staffers comment about Sen. John McCain dying was awful but not a fireable offense.
Kelly Sadlers crack that McCains opposition to CIA director nominee Gina Haspel didnt matter because hes dying anyway was just a joke told at a private meeting, Mulvaney said in an appearance on Fox News.
This was a private meeting inside the White House. It was a joke. It was a badly considered joke that she said fell flat, Mulvaney told Fox.

Trump picks Pastor who says Jews, Muslims Will Go to Hell - to pray at new US Embassy in Jerusalem
Source: The New Civil Rights Movement
By DAVID BADASH MAY 12, 20181:28 PM
Pastor Robert Jeffress, a Fox News contributor, megachurch Baptist preacher from Dallas, and close Trump ally and surrogate, has been chosen by the Trump administration to lead a prayer at Monday's opening dedication celebration of the new and highly controversial U.S. embassy in Jerusalem. The choice of Jeffress makes this highly controversial move all the more problematic, given his views on literally every other religion, including other Christian religions, Judaism, and Islam.
https://twitter.com/foxandfriends/status/995337556786065408
Jeffress, who hosts both radio and TV shows that are broadcast in hundreds of cities in the U.S. and around the world, has a long history of delivering incendiary and bigoted remarks.
In short, Jeffress says that if you're not a Christian and a certain type of Christian you're going to hell, as Right Wing Watch has documented.
He has said Islam promotes pedophilia, and is "evil," "violent," and a "false" religion. Pastor Jeffress, in a now infamous 2011 interview, also said that "every other religion in the world is wrong: Islam is wrong, it is a heresy from the pit of Hell; Mormonism is wrong, it is a heresy from the pit of Hell, and, "Judaism, you cant be saved being a Jew."

Greitens' fateful affair began during crossroads of his military life
By Kevin McDermott St. Louis Post-Dispatch
In February 2015, former Navy SEAL Eric Greitens signed a four-year commitment to return to active reserve status. Two months later, he told the Navy he was backing out of it.
What happened in between, the record now shows, is that Greitens began the extramarital affair thats currently at the center of one criminal case against him an affair that could theoretically have tarnished his military career had he carried out his original plans and returned to active status in the reserves.
(I) had hoped to continue to serve, but just found that I couldnt be a great Navy officer in the reserves again and a great Dad at the same time, Greitens would later explain in an email to a reporter.
He cited in particular how weekend reserve drills would cut into family time: Weekends were incredibly precious.
Greitens went on trial Thursday in St. Louis on a felony charge of invasion of privacy. Prosecutors allege he snapped a nonconsensual photo of his extramarital lover while she was bound, blindfolded and partly undressed during their first sexual encounter, on March 21, 2015 a Saturday.
Records show it was less than a month later, as the tumultuous affair continued, that Greitens backed out of his Navy reserve agreement, with a significant loss in pay and benefits.
