Sanders takes on Fox -- and emerges triumphant

The Democratic front-runner ventured where his rivals haven't dared, and notched an hour of positive publicity.

By HOLLY OTTERBEIN 04/15/2019 10:08 PM EDT

Excerpt:

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Bernie Sanders entered the Fox's den on Monday night — and he not only survived the hour-long encounter, but often dominated.

Appearing at a Fox News-hosted town hall smack dab in the middle of Trump Country, the Democratic presidential front-runner played the part, swatting down tough questions from the hosts about health care, defense spending, and his newfound wealth. At one point, the Vermont senator even led the network’s audience in a call-and-response that found them cheering loudly for his policies.

In the days preceding the event, Sanders faced backlash from liberals who said he shouldn’t participate given the network's nativist bent and cheerleading for President Donald Trump. But when it was over, Sanders had received an hour of positive exposure on the highest-rated cable channel — something none of his primary rivals have yet risked.

The town hall took place in a cultural center in the shadows of a former steel mill here, in a county in Pennsylvania that voted for Trump after twice supporting Barack Obama. But the room was packed with Sanders supporters, and the Vermont senator fed off the energy of the crowd.

For the Sanders campaign, it was an ideal end to a four-day swing through the industrial Midwest that was meant to show that he's the presidential candidate best positioned to beat Trump.

Bernie Sanders releases 10 years of tax returns

By Gregory Krieg, Anna Bahney and Ryan Nobles, CNN Mon April 15, 2019

Excerpt:

(CNN) -- Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday released a decade of tax returns, providing new insight into how the Democratic socialist senator from Vermont became a millionaire over his two presidential runs.

According to returns provided by his campaign, Sanders reported a total family income of $566,421 in 2018 -- $382,920 of which came from writing and royalties. The documents said he paid $137,573 in federal taxes in 2018 and owed $8,267 in taxes for the year. Sanders and his wife, Jane Sanders, reported paying a 26% effective tax rate on his adjusted gross income. The couple reported donating $18,950 to charity.

The Vermont independent made his records public on this year's tax filing deadline, just ahead of an appearance at a Fox News town hall where he is expected to call on Trump to do the same.

Sanders in a statement said the returns "show that our family has been very fortunate."

"I consider paying more in taxes as my income rose to be both an obligation and an investment in our country," he added. "I will continue to fight to make our tax system more progressive so that our country has the resources to guarantee the American Dream to all people."

Bernie Sanders Calls For Moratorium On Agriculture Mergers

“I think we’ve not only got to have that moratorium, but we have to go further... We have to start breaking them up.”

INTERVIEW VIDEO at LINK

Excerpts:

From going after technology companies and taking on pharmaceutical giants, antitrust issues have been a central issue in the early stages of 2020 Democratic presidential race.

Sanders said that “in almost every sector of American society ― agriculture, Wall Street, etc.,” a few large corporations increasingly are dominating. “That means higher prices, less competition. And it hurts consumers, and it hurts the real people who do the work,” he said. ... Sanders’ call for a moratorium on agriculture mergers goes further than what some others in the presidential field are calling for.

Sanders said he’s worried about the national security implications of having foreign companies controlling U.S. agricultural companies.

“We don’t survive if we don’t eat,” he said. “And I do not want our agricultural land to be in the control of people who may not have the best interests of the United States at heart.”

AgriNews recently summed up what the dairy industry now looks after Walmart built a large processing plant in Indiana: “Walmart has Walmart contracted-truckers hauling Walmart contracted-milk to a Walmart bottling plant that Walmart will then process and haul to Walmart stores on Walmart trucks to sell directly to Walmart customers. That’s an airtight form of vertical integration rarely seen in U.S. agriculture and never seen on that scale.”

Vermont Poisoned Press: The original plot to stop Bernie Sanders ... and why it didn't work

By Greg Guma

Apr 14 2019

Excerpts:

The dirty tricks began right after the shocking election that made Bernie Sanders mayor of Burlington in March 1981. Within days, a new “underground newspaper” was launched in the city. But you couldn’t get it at a newsstand, or anywhere public. And the content was designed to discredit rather than inform.

At first considered no more than a nuisance, the Flea Press gradually began to look more threatening. It was making red baiting acceptable. At times other media outlets even began to sound a bit like the publication that mocked them. When Sanders debated City Council members about his proposed appointees, for example, the Burlington Free Press described them as a “tight cadre of comrades.”

For almost six months, theories circulated about who was behind the weekly slander sheet. It had to be someone close to city affairs, in fact someone who had mourned with the Democrats on election night. Close analysis of Flea Press content revealed attendance at budget meetings and other city functions, along with deep contempt for neighborhood groups and the local press.

But few knew the truth. That is, until a paste-up of page two was left behind on a copier only blocks from City Hall.

<...>

WARNING! shouted the headline of a full-page ad in the Free Press. If Bernie won a second term, it charged, the consequences would be dire.

It was a desperate move that suggested Sanders’ leadership would produce everything from higher electric bills to more unemployment. And it turned out to be a major tactical mistake. Burlington voters had seen him and other progressives in action for two years, and rejected the hysteria and negativity. On March 1, Bernie Sanders won a clear majority of 52% in a three-way race. Progressive politics was in Burlington to stay.

Reflecting on his first victory in 1981, Sanders concluded, “I think we had pretty much of a class vote.” Almost 40 years later, it remains to be seen whether national Democratic leaders are more open and inclusive than local Democrats were after Sanders’ first win. If they are, the rest of the country could get to cast a class vote of its own.
