Bernie Sanders joining the first-ever Native American political forum Sioux City, Iowa. Aug 19/20

Excerpt:

Some 3 million to 5 million Native Americans live in the U.S., according to the National Congress of American Indians. And, as Semans points out, that’s an important voting block: “Right now, we have large populations in seven states that are battleground states.” Native American political influence has had a substantial impact on elections in some states. In North Dakota in 2012, for example, tribal voter turnout efforts were credited with the election of Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp, who won by a slim 3,000 vote margin.

Over the two-day event, candidates will take questions from panels of elected tribal officials, tribal members, and Native American youth. The forum will likely discuss a plethora of issues, among them sovereign rights of tribes, housing, and the protection of Native land.

Another topic that’s likely to come up: voter suppression and disenfranchisement. In states like North Dakota and Wisconsin, Native Americans are dissuaded from going to the polls by voter ID laws that require identification with proof of address that it is difficult for many to obtain: many Native American nations are located in rural areas without formal addresses. What’s more, polling places are often situated far from those nations. Thankfully, in last year’s midterm elections, Native American rights advocates went to bat against the issue and championed unprecedented voter turnout.

Opinion: Bernie Sanders: As a child, rent control kept a roof over my head

By Bernie Sanders

Excerpt:

I believe that every American should have a fundamental right to safe, decent and affordable housing. Stable and affordable housing is not only essential for a person to live with dignity, but without it, economic opportunity is simply an illusion.

As one of the first members of Congress to introduce legislation to establish the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund, I believe we must substantially expand this program to build the 7.4 million units of housing that lower-income people, senior citizens and people with disabilities desperately need. We must also invest far more resources into maintaining and expanding our public housing stock.

In the wealthiest country in the history of the world, we must end homelessness in America by doubling funding for HUD's McKinney-Vento homelessness assistance grants and providing critical outreach services.

We need to substantially increase grants for cities and towns that wish to create community land trust housing. This anti-gentrification tool -- which was first pioneered in Burlington, Vermont, when I was mayor -- allows low- and middle-income buyers to purchase homes at affordable, below-market prices on community-owned land.

We should also support communities' rent control ordinances and their mandates that developers include affordable housing in their new projects. And we must aggressively defend and promote the legal protections of fair housing, so that we are making sure no one is denied housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, gender or disability.

Detroit (CNN)Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday teamed up with rapper Cardi B to film a 2020 presidential campaign video meant to appeal to young voters.

"We (are) working on a way to involve more young people in the political process," the Vermont independent told CNN in an interview as he arrived for the shoot. "The future of America depends on young people. They are voting in large numbers, but not large enough numbers."

He said he and Cardi B spoke about a range of issues, including canceling student debt, climate change and raising the minimum wage. The video -- filmed at the TEN Nail Bar, a local nail salon owned by two black women -- is the first collaboration between the duo.
