Sanders to join nurses for official endorsement event Friday, Nov. 15

National Nurses United, the nation’s largest union of registered nurses, announces today that it will endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. Nurses cite how Sanders’ leading platform closely aligns with nurses’ values on a whole host of issues, including rebuilding America’s labor movement to restore workers’ rights and his trailblazing leadership to win Medicare for All.

The endorsement will officially take place this Friday, November 15 at a press conference.

“For nurses, our solidarity is a matter of life or death for our patients. We need a president who makes it easier for us to stand together and hold our employers accountable for putting people above profits,” said NNU President Jean Ross, RN, of Minnesota. “Bernie Sanders is leading all the candidates on labor, with his Workplace Democracy Act and as a cosponsor of the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act.”

Nurses also say they are backing Sanders based on his longtime work with the union to pass legislation dedicated to protecting nurses and patients, including his support for federal safe nurse-to-patient staffing ratios, federal health care workplace violence protections, support for a strong Veterans Health Administration, and guaranteed, quality health care system with Medicare for All.

OZOMATLI TO JUMP 'TIO BERNIE' INTO THE BARRIO AT HISTORIC SALAZAR PARK IN EAST L.A.

MEMO TORRES NOVEMBER 14, 2019

Excerpt:

The Grammy award-winning Latino group from East L.A., playing hip-hop doused in salsa and shredded with rock, are widely known and respected for their artistry, their activism, and for maintaining a strong presence within communities. This is their second time performing for the Presidential Candidate.

More and more Latinos feel like Sanders is their compa’ even calling him “Tío Bernie.” He’s attracting the endorsements of popular Latina figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cardi B, and the Puerto Rican Mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulín Cruz. With Ozomatli having his back again and holding his rally at Salazar Park, Bernie Sanders is shooting for another notch of Barrio Cred on to his political cinto pitiado.

L.A. Taco: Why Bernie?

Raul: We’re down with the old man. We as a group we check in with each other about these kinds of things and we decided that his campaign was totally in line with what we are doing. [We] have someone who has a general sentiment that we agree with, which is the idea that we should all have access to education and medical benefits relatively easily, that we should have a society in mind that’s trying to provide opportunities for everybody.”

Uli adds, “The thing with Bernie, he hasn’t changed his story from day one. He’s been that guy that’s waved that flag since day one and I think a lot of people are barely coming around to it now.”

UTLA Overwhelmingly Endorses Sen. Bernie Sanders for US President

NOVEMBER 14, 2019

LOS ANGELES — United Teachers Los Angeles, the second-largest teachers’ local in the country, is proud to endorse Senator Bernie Sanders for US President in the 2020 Primary Election, making UTLA the first teachers’ union in the country to endorse a presidential candidate.

Tonight, the UTLA House of Representatives – the elected leadership body of the 34,000-member union — voted 80% in favor of endorsing Sen. Sanders, capping the most comprehensive member engagement process that UTLA has ever conducted for a political candidate.

Thursday’s House vote followed a six-week discussion at school sites. Following that member engagement, on Wednesday at nine regional meetings, more than 500 elected site representatives voted 72.5% yes to the presidential endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders. Wednesday’s vote was opened up to allow any member who attended to vote alongside elected chapter leaders.

UTLA President Alex Caputo-Pearl said: “Why now, and why Bernie? Because we want him to win in the primary election and because we need an unapologetic, longstanding ally of progressive policies to make public education a priority in the White House. Sanders is the first viable major candidate in 25 years in the Democratic Party to stand up against privatization, the charter billionaires, and high-stakes testing and to stand up for a massive redistribution of wealth to schools and social services. Critically, like UTLA, Sen. Sanders believes in building a national movement for real, lasting change.”
