'sight' in this case, Manny;not 'site'.

Yes, I'm a grammar nazi when it suits me.

I knew the Long family many years ago.

Huey was repugnant in many ways but undeniably brilliant. When the state legislature refused to fund all the paved roads he wanted, he took the miniscule amount they did give him and used most of it (minus his usual 'commission') to build a series of 1-mile paved stretches spaced out all over the state. People would be struggling along in the dust or mud, then hit that blessed pavement, and suffer even more when the dirt road resumed. Next time Huey asked for road $, he got plenty.

Although born into poverty, he managed to acquire a superficially elegant manner and could speak and move comfortably in upper echelons. But he never lost the common touch. I've seen film of one of his home state speeches where he's pounding the podium and shouting that he's "gonna make those crooks in Washington give back summa that grub they ain't got no business with!"

If he had lived, he almost certainly would've made it to the WH and become America's worst, most savage dictator. I don't think he was any saner than Earl.

You can guess how the local news goes in this blood red MidWest state.

They like to poll the area residents on all sorts of things to make them feel important and smart. The other week they went around asking 5 actual real politicians and business owners how they thought raising the minimum wage would affect the economy. Three predicted hellfire and brimstone; one couldn't decide but he was pretty sure it would bring disaster; and the single positive response was extremely weak and tenuous. Then the show host clucked and noted that it didn't look too good....

They don't KNOW a damn thing and care even less. If their little 'polls' ever turned out different from expected, I'm sure they'd carefully select which responses to share. Such blind, stupid arrogance! We said it wouldn't work, so it won't.

I read an article elsewhere online where a woman professional pointed out

there are 3 things women need to learn to say to men: "Stop interrupting me", "I just said that" (because men are too prone to repeat thing's we've already pointed out), and "That needs no explantion." For some reason that language always came rather easily to me.

I've often heard it said that the world thinks a man's no means no but a woman's no means maybe. Here in the MidWest I've been urged to concede a point to a man strictly on the basis of gender more than once.

Please see my recent reply to Steve Lesser, whose post I greatly appreciated. Had to tell him about a friend of mine in Los Angeles I thought he'd like!

You would've liked a friend I had in Los Angeles.

We were both into Tae Kwon Do, but she was at the top of the black belt range, and she served as a discreet bodyguard to visiting dignitaries, because she was very petite and looked like what the men considered eye candy. But she could kick butt with the best, and she was a crack shot too.

I'm not going to argue policy or anything else with the Obama haters here; YOU DON'T LISTEN ANYWAY

What I will do is throw this in your faces:

I never loved President Barack Hussein Obama MORE than now. God bless every gray hair on his head, and SHAME ON YOU!

So go ahead and dump on me for saying that. It won't matter. I'm sick of the whole lot of you. You've completely lost credibility and any shred of respect in my eyes for acting exactly like the insane GOP. Put you in a dark closet and nobody could tell the difference.

May 29, 2014

If a single person out there thinks the GOP would act one bit better than the Sudanese

if they had enough power, then you're living in a fantasy world. The only thing that would change would be the names. Then a Christian could be convicted and severely punished - perhaps including execution - for marrying a Jew. Or God forbid, a Muslim or Buddhist! Think about that if you decide to sit home on your ass on election day. We get the government that we (collectively) deserve.

May 29, 2014

That's what most of us would do; but

Maybe she still wouldn't be allowed out of the country. She may also have the (mistaken) notion that she'll go to hell if she recants.

Her life afterward - if she recanted - could be worse in her eyes than death. They'd hardly treat her with kindness and courtesy!

May 28, 2014

I've been absorbed in other matters, but it looks as if I need to return to my former practice of

daily reading of all BOG posts. Just to keep some of the stray trolls in check. Turn away for a second and all hell can break loose. I'm not an admin and don't wish to be, but I should at least kinda keep an eye on the front gate for them. They're very good to respond when notified. Farrrr better than relying on the jury system! Besides, I don't think outsiders have any business adjudicating in our own forum, especially since so many of them are such Obama haters I don't know why DU puts up with them. They sound more like Rush and Beck than any kind of actual Democrat.

Absolutely MUST be read. Repeatedly.

I understood and appreciated the first article I read about the article (as well as laughed/gagged at the original) but I can't seem to get enough of it. Righteous Rant indeed. Congratulations and thank you.

Although I've read comments elsewhere to the effect that the poor are too exhausted and dispirited to EVER rise up, sometimes I suspect that's a certain group whistling past the graveyard. History suggests otherwise. There are many more of us than there are of them, and eventually we'll reach the tipping point, superior weapons be damned. An economist named Cay, I think (forgive me, I'm still on my first cup of coffee) has been saying it will be the bloodiest thing the world has ever seen. I'm quite sure he's right.

I've seen a couple of memorable, provocative signs this year: "The French Aristocracy Never Saw It Coming Either" and "Pretty Soon the Poor Will Have Nothing Left to Eat But the Rich".

Not that I'm any great admirer of Buffet, but I'll grant him this much; at least he understands fat cows give more milk. To put things in agrarian terms, the rich are eating their seed corn.

About IrishAyes

Still an ardent Irish-American Catholic damnYankee Yellow Dog Democrat socialist after all these years. (cue Simon music) Army brat and wife for many years, now have been on the loose far longer than I was married. After my two red chows died, I took in a mini-beagle cross that I named Molly Maguire, thinking she might need a good Irish name like my original real one. Later she got a baby sister, a smooth-coat JRT I named Brigid after the greatest of the ancient Celtic goddesses. My great-grandfather and his son fought for Michael Collins and barely made it out of Ireland one step ahead of John Bull. They slipped over to Wales for new identities and then forward to the States for a fresh start. That makes me second generation of illegal but certainly justified immigrants. There are precious few people to whose defense I fly immediately, but the list includes Hillary Clinton, President Barack Obama even when I disagree with him - it happens! - and living Irish patriots Gerry Adams and Martin \\\'Mind Your Kneecaps\\\' McGuiness. I pray earnestly for a united and free Ireland rescued from all official British occupation, with every square inch of alleged \\\'ancestral lands\\\' now held immorally and illegally by the invaders returned to the rightful owners. Irish-only rule for Ireland. No foreign masters anymore! I find it passing strange when Brits chide ME about \'interfering\' in Irish politics!
