Days after Lincoln Memorial is vandalized, another D.C. monument is attacked with green paint

Another Washington landmark has been vandalized with green paint, News4 has learned.

Just three days after paint was found splattered at the Lincoln Memorial, a similar substance was discovered on a statue memorializing Joseph Henry, the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.

The paint is on the front and back of the statue's pedestal.

The statue is located outside the Smithsonian castle, near the merry-go-round on the National Mall.

Spokeswoman for Kentucky Republican Party charged with DUI

The spokeswoman for the Republican Party of Kentucky was arrested Saturday night for driving under the influence, according to jail records.

Kelsey Cooper, who was hired by the Republican Party earlier this year, was arrested by Lexington police. Lexington-Fayette Urban County jail records show Cooper was released Sunday. she did not respond to emails or phone messages about the arrest Sunday.

Details of the arrest were not available Sunday. The citation had not been filed in Fayette District Court on Sunday night, and Lexington police did not return calls seeking additional information.

WKYT-TV in Lexington reported that Cooper stopped behind Lexington police officers on Saturday evening and said she was lost. The officers smelled alcohol on Cooper and performed field sobriety tests, which Cooper allegedly failed, according to the TV station.

BREAKING: CUMULUS PLANNING TO DROP RUSH LIMBAUGH, SEAN HANNITY

In a major shakeup for the radio industry, Cumulus Media, the second-biggest broadcaster in the country, is planning to drop both Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity from its stations at the end of the year, an industry source told POLITICO on Sunday.

Cumulus has decided that it will not renew its contracts with either host, the source said, a move that would remove the two most highly rated conservative talk personalities from more than 40 Cumulus channels in major markets.

The decision comes after negotiations between Cumulus and Premiere Networks, the division of Clear Channel that distributes Limbaugh and Hannity's shows, broke down due to disagreements over the cost of the distribution rights, the source said. Cumulus is known to drive a hard bargain on costs, and Clear Channel is known to seek top dollar for big names.

As industry insiders caution, Cumulus and Clear Channel have come to the brink before during contract negotiations only to resume talks. But the source told POLITICO that Clear Channel was unlikely to reduce the cost for distribution rights to a level that would satisfy Cumulus.

Couple challenges Kentucky law against gay marriage

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A couple who married in Ontario in 2004 filed a federal lawsuit Friday challenging the constitutionality of Kentucky laws that don't recognize same-sex marriages from other states.

Following a U.S. Supreme Court decision last month giving full federal recognition to legally married gay couples, Gregory Bourke and Michael De Leon of Louisville decided the time was right to ask a federal judge to require Kentucky to give same-sex couples married outside the state the same rights as heterosexual couples.

"There's no reason why we should be second-class citizens," De Leon said. "We should be at the table with everybody else."

Kentucky has had a ban on same-sex marriage and civil unions in its constitution since 2004.

Obama administration sends two Guantanamo detainees to Algeria

The Defense Department notified Congress on Friday that it intends to send two Guantanamo Bay detainees back to Algeria, White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement.

"As the president has said, the United States remains determined to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay," Carney said, and the repatriation of the two detainees -- the first releases in severalyears -- are "in support of those efforts."

"We are taking this step in consultation with the Congress, and in a responsible manner that protects our national security," Carney said.

"We continue to call on Congress to join us in supporting these efforts by lifting the current restrictions that significantly limit our ability to transfer detainees out of Guantanamo, even those who have been approved for transfer," he added.

Gov. Christie calls libertarian thought making its way through both parties "very dangerous"

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Thursday offered a clear broadside against Republicans drifting toward a more libertarian view of foreign policy, lumping Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) in with them and suggesting they explain their position to victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The House earlier this week narrowly voted against a reduction in funding for the National Security Agency, as libertarian-leaning members from both sides joined together to vote for the amendment.

“As a former prosecutor who was appointed by President George W. Bush on Sept. 10, 2001, I just want us to be really cautious, because this strain of libertarianism that’s going through both parties right now and making big headlines, I think, is a very dangerous thought,” Christie said.

Asked whether he includes Paul — a fellow potential 2016 presidential candidate — in his criticism, Christie didn’t back down.
