Omaha police find cold, crying toddler alone in parked car

Published Friday, January 3, 2014 at 1:00 am / Updated at 9:32 am
By Kevin Cole / World-Herald staff writer

"A 2-year-old child found cold and alone Wednesday night in a parked car near 50th Street and Ames Avenue has been taken into protective custody.

Officer Michael Pecha, a spokesman for the Omaha Police Department, said officers were called to the parking lot outside a bank at 5018 Ames Ave., about 6:30 p.m. to check on an intoxicated woman who was on the ground. As officers called for an ambulance, they noticed a vehicle in the middle of the lot with the engine off, the lights on and the driver's door open.

Inside the car, they found the woman's daughter crying and cold to the touch, Pecha said. The child was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center and her mother, Kimberly Deleau, 41, of Omaha, was taken to Immanuel Medical Center."

Domino’s Fires Employees After They Refuse to Work Below Minimum Wage

"America’s purveyors of half-baked crust and under-cooked cheese are clearly not too thrilled about paying a fair wage to their employees.

In yet another shocking example of a corporate giant exploiting its workers, employees of a New York City Domino’s claim they were fired from their delivery jobs after complaining to management about unfair wages. According to CBS, Domino’s said the delivery drivers worked extended hours inside the restaurant, but still for less than minimum wage — and without tips. Following a meeting with management about the issue, 24 employees were terminated. Currently, the employees receive $6.00 an hour plus tips just to scrape by.

Domino’s just added more fuel to the severely underpaid worker’s fire. Workers and advocacy groups are continually organizing protests and walkouts to demand a living wage and the right to unionize, which would protect them from examples like this one at Domino’s. Pregnant Woman wakes up to an empty Womb

ROME -- A lawyer for an Italian forced to have a cesarean section in Britain after authorities found her mentally incompetent to make medical decisions says the woman had made it clear she wanted to return to Italy to give birth.

Lawyer Stefano Oliva says her client contends she was sedated and then "woke up without the baby in her womb." Oliva, interviewed Wednesday in Rome by The Associated Press, said her client suffers from bipolar disorder, was back in Italy and didn't want to speak to reporters.

Oliva said the woman had told British authorities she wanted to give birth in Italy and would entrust herself to Italy's social services agency. British authorities say they took the baby into custody for possible adoption only after other options were exhausted.
