Meth addict accidentally burns down world fifth oldest tree

yes, it's from a little over a year ago. I was reading this article which was part of a larger piece about how stupid and destructive humans are. Reading at the link about stupid meth addict burning down a natural wonder. Then they showed her picture and it's unbelievable. She doesn't even look human. She looks like some sort of undead wrath or a zombie or some kind of crazy soulless creature that you would read about in a Steven Kind novel. Maybe the endtimes are upon us, between this and krokodil I just don't know anymore.

Sarah Barnes had climbed the tree to smoke, because where better to get high than in the branches of a 118-foot, 3,500 year old cypress ? The fire in question came when she wanted to get a better view of her surroundings, and presumably also her drugs. “The Senator,” as the tree was known, was burned to the ground.

The good news is that Barnes seemed sufficiently chastened by the whole thing, reportedly telling friends that “I can’t believe I burned down a tree older than Jesus.” Neither can he, Sarah. Neither can he.

So what have we learned? First of all, please be careful with lighters. In the wrong hands, they can be deceptively destructive little gadgets. And then yes, right, meth. Don’t do that.

Which is a better night to drink, party and get drunk. I think I prefer Friday night.

Portraits Of Children From All Over The World And Where They Sleep

Where Children Sleep is a telling series that explores the various sleeping environments of children from all over the world. Created by photographer James Mollison, the series shows a portrait of each child alongside the space or room they sleep in.

From children surrounded by countless toys and electronics, to the less fortunate who sleep on a hard board, or even outside, the series provides a bit of insight into how different people live all over the world.

Maybe we should all be shut away on some planet for the insane

“We seldom consider how much of our lives we must render in return for some object we barely want, seldom need, buy only because it was put before us...And this is understandable given the workings of our system where without a job we perish, where if we don't want a job and are happy to get by we are labeled irresponsible, non-contributing leeches on society. But if we hire a fleet of bulldozers, tear up half the countryside and build some monstrous factory, casino or mall, we are called entrepreneurs, job-creators, stalwarts of the community. Maybe we should all be shut away on some planet for the insane. Then again, maybe that is where we are.”

Black Friday violence: Officer dragged, driver shot outside Romeoville store

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-black-friday-kohls-shooting-20131128,0,3522858.story

A driver believed to be involved in a Black Friday shoplifting scheme was shot by police after dragging a police officer in a parking lot outside a Romeoville department store late Thursday, authorities said.

About 10 p.m. police responded to a report of men stealing clothing from the Kohl's store at 261 S. Weber Road, Romeoville Police Chief Mark Turvey said.

Officers chased two suspects who were seen fleeing the store toward a Pontiac Sunfire waiting outside, Turvey said. An officer became involved in a struggle and was partially caught in the car, Turvey said.

The driver of the car ignored commands to stop and dragged the officer, police said. A second officer nearby fired a shot at the driver, striking him in the shoulder, Turvey said. The injured officer and the driver were hospitalized with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening, police said.

Comet ISON did not survive its encounter with the Sun

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/11/28/nasa_hangout_live_video_chat.html

UPDATE 2 (Nov. 28 at 18:45 UTC): An image of ISON from 17:48 (20 minutes after the one above) shows the comet even more stretched out. If the solid nucleus were intact it wouldn't be so smeared out, and more telling, the comet fades and narrows to the upper left, in the direction of its motion. That's exactly what you'd exect if the comet has broken up.]

Neo Nazis taking over UFO town

http://www.8newsnow.com/story/24067120/i-team-neo-nazi-buys-up-rachel-nevada-near-area-51

RACHEL, NEV. -- Residents of Rachel, Nevada -- the tiny town that became world famous because it sits on the doorstep of the Area 51 military base -- are on edge. Someone has been buying up property under their noses, and when they checked to find out who was behind it, they found ties to the white supremacy movement.

You have to be tough to live in a place like Rachel. It's not exactly known for its amenities. So, when the only gas station in town gets gobbled up, then shut down and when the only trailer park gets purchased, then wiped out, it's bound to attract attention. And when residents learned that the people who have been buying their town have ties to neo-Nazis and white supremacists, they were creeped out and anxious.

Rachel, Nevada is the number one attraction on the world's only extraterrestrial highway. That said, there's not a whole lot to it. The heart and soul of the town is the Little A'Le'Inn which has capitalized on its proximity to the world's most famous classified military base -- Area 51.

For 25 years, the owners have scratched out an existence by catering to UFO hunters and desert travelers. But these days, they're worried, all because of a mystery man who came to town.

The thoughtful wife

The thoughtful wife has a simple beverage (cold in summer, hot in winter) ready for her weary husband when he comes home at night.

Just found that while thumbing through my Betty Crocker cookbook, published in 1961. Made me think of the ritualism behind male dominated culture. The standard Norman Rockwell inspired Thanksgiving has the wife cooking all day while the man watches sports. When the meal has finished cooking the man then sits at the head of the table and distributes portions in the form of carving the turkey to the rest of the family.

My how far we've evolved from cave-paintings and hunter gatherer society.
