The other big Texas new for today...

Although a distant second to the state giving the okay to vigilante law enforcement (with a reward!) in order to create their own little American Christian theocracy of he-man-woman-haters, there is other Texas news.

Today is the day that anyone can walk into a store that carries them and buy a gun with no background check, no training, no nothing. And then just put it in their purse or pocket and go about their day.

As Twitter said, "Pick up a pistol at 7-11 with your Slurpee".

Trump's Social Media Platform Is Hosting Child Porn

Stanford's Internet Observatory reported last week that Trump's social media platform Gettr is host to child pornography. The service "does not implement industry standard" moderation tools, which filter out child pornography.

A pro-Trump social media service has a major problem, according to a new report: It's not filtering out known images of child pornography.

Gettr, which was started by former Trump aide and spokesperson Jason Miller, has "very few — if any — mechanisms for detecting spam, violent content, pornography, and child exploitation imagery," a new study by the Stanford Internet Observatory said.

The study found 16 examples of images on Gettr that were flagged by PhotoDNA, a photo-moderation database, as "child exploitation imagery."

Arkansas legislators override veto, enact transgender youth treatment ban

Source: NBCNews

Arkansas legislators Tuesday made the state the first to ban gender-affirming care for transgender minors, overriding Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson's veto.

The law prohibits doctors from providing gender-affirming medical care, such as puberty blockers and hormone therapy, and prevents them from referring minors to other providers.

Major medical organizations, such as the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, opposed the bill, which transgender advocates say could have severe negative effects on trans youths in the state.

These bills (85 and counting) and now laws spanning 30 states are being written, promoted and funded by national conservative Christian groups. After the Supreme Court ruled on marriage equality, they turned to attacking trans kids to raise funds and form a common enemy. As the GOP merged with evangelical Christians, they included the attacks directly into their party platform.

So now we've reached the point where even "conscience bills" allowing an individual practitioner to be a bigot are no longer good enough. Now they have to outlaw at the state level medical care that every major health care or medical organization supports (list is here: https://transhealthproject.org/resources/medical-organization-statements/ ).

This is going to ruin or end many young lives, and for what? So that religious and political leaders can force conservative values on America and personally garner more money and power.

Alabama Landlords Fear Renting New Home To Roy Moore Accuser Whose Home Burned In Arson Fire

Johnson said she’s struggling now to get out of the motel room that she, husband and grandson have been sharing since the fire.

'They don’t want to rent to me,' Johnson told AL.com Saturday of Etowah County rental property owners. 'They think, if they burned that house down, they might burn my house down. They have nothing available.'

The Etowah County Arson Task Force says a person of interest has been questioned but no arrest has been made. They add that the investigation 'does not lead us to believe that the fire is in any way related to Roy Moore or allegations made against him.'

Former WH Ethics Lawyer Files Hatch Act Violation Complaint Against Comey

Source: NYTimes, C&L

Painter outlines a case against Trump, laying out his possible connections to Russia and how nothing is being discussed publicly from the FBI, but then does a 180 pivot to what actually came out, this vague statement on emails. Painter states it quite clearly:

"Violations of the Hatch Act and of government ethics rules on misuse of official positions are not permissible in any circumstances, including in the case of an executive branch official acting under pressure from politically motivated members of Congress. Such violations are of even greater concern when the agency is the F.B.I."

And this is the kicker:

"But an official doesn’t need to have a specific intent — or desire — to influence an election to be in violation of the Hatch Act or government ethics rules. The rules are violated if it is obvious that the official’s actions could influence the election, there is no other good reason for taking those actions, and the official is acting under pressure from persons who obviously do want to influence the election."

No intent is needed. The fact that Comey put in motion actions that could affect the election is in and of itself a violation of the Hatch Act. Period. And there is no disputing that his actions are having an affect. Painter closes with this:

"This is no trivial matter. We cannot allow F.B.I. or Justice Department officials to unnecessarily publicize pending investigations concerning candidates of either party while an election is underway. That is an abuse of power. Allowing such a precedent to stand will invite more, and even worse, abuses of power in the future."

And the actual op-ed, here:

"And that is why, on Saturday, I filed a complaint against the F.B.I. with the Office of Special Counsel, which investigates Hatch Act violations, and with the Office of Government Ethics. I have spent much of my career working on government ethics and lawyers’ ethics, including two and a half years as the chief White House ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush, and I never thought that the F.B.I. could be dragged into a political circus surrounding one of its investigations. Until this week. For the sake of full disclosure, in this election I have supported Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, John Kasich and Hillary Clinton for president, in that order."

And according to the WashPost,
" there is only one penalty, as I understand it, for violation of the Hatch Act for a federal employee. And that is removal. "

So it looks like neither President Obama nor President Clinton will need to actually fire the guy...

Canada's only gender-confirming surgery clinic firebombed, closed for now.

I have a hard time believing this is not a side effect of the American GOP & religious right choosing to use trans people as their vehicle for gaining social power and votes come November.

Centre Métropolitain de Chirurgie is the only clinic in Canada that provides lower (genital) surgery for trans people. Many trans people from the Northeast U.S. also try to go there as Dr. Brassard is known for doing superlative work; they also went to his mentor before he trained Brassard and retired.

They are now closed due to an arsonist firebombing the operating room. Four surgeries for the coming week have already been postponed but the clinic does not yet have a new home, even temporarily. Trans people typically are on a waiting list for 2-4 years or more & arrange their lives around surgery and the months of recovery. Any who were in the pipeline are going to be drastically affected by this event. It's also going to have a substantial impact on their emotional lives as this surgery is something that to some means the difference between choosing to continue living and giving up. In Canada, they have no alternative clinic, no where else to go.
