House panel votes to make women register for the draft

The proposal passed the House Armed Services Committee without support from its sponsor, Iraq War veteran Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., who introduced the measure as a way to force congressional conversation about the role of women in the military.
But several Republicans broke ranks with their committee counterparts to support the idea of drafting women for military service, until now a possibility solely reserved for men.

Whole Foods under fire after Gay Austin pastor sues over homophobic slur on cake

A gay pastor in Austin, Texas accused a local Whole Foods store of discrimination for adding a homophobic slur to his cake order, KXAN-TV reported.

Jordan Brown was scheduled to give a press conference on Monday following the release of a video detailing the incident.

He says in the short video that he went to the company’s flagship store on April 14 and ordered a cake bearing the inscription, “Love wins.” An employee complied with the request, sealing the cake with a sticker.

Brown’s lawsuit stated that he caught the slur written on the cake — which Brown intended to give to a congregation member — after driving away from the store. The video shows the cake inside the box bearing the company’s logo, and Brown also displays his receipt.

Finally paid off my student loans today!

Thank God...

44k, took about 2 years. Something I never realized was exactly how fast the interest adds up on these things. I borrowed about 39k originally. I understand that's how loans work, but looking at the math when you agree and seeing the proof in the pudding are two quite different feelings.

Anyway, as of today, my wife and I are 100% debt free!

A Marine infantry battalion that was embroiled in a war-zone scandal will present a former squad leader with the nation's third-highest valor award this week — nearly five years after he led his comrades out of an intense firefight in Afghanistan.

Former Sgt. Matthew Parker, who served as a squad leader with 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, during the unit's 2011 deployment to Afghanistan, will be presented with the Silver Star on Friday during a ceremony at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Marine Corps Times has learned.

Parker is being recognized for stepping up to lead his platoon when his commander and another squad leader were injured in an attack while operating in Helmand province's Musa Qala district, according to his award citation.

While Parker's actions serve as an example of the success 3/2 showed on the battlefield during what was highly held as a successful deployment, much of it was overshadowed when a video surfaced in 2012 showing other Marines with his unit defiling enemy remains.

Parker was not involved, but his award nomination — along with several other personnel matters within the unit — was put on administrative hold, said 1st Lt. Joe Caldwell, a Marine spokesman.

Escaped inmate killed by father of family he took hostage.

VICKSBURG, Miss. — An escaped murder suspect has been shot and killed by a family he took hostage.

Rafael McCloud escaped from jail in Warren County, Mississippi last week where he was being held on charges of rape and capital murder.

Thursday morning, he approached a man who was starting his car and forced his way into the man’s home.

McCloud tied up the man and his wife and then stabbed the man according to WLBT-TV.

At some point, the man reportedly got free, got his gun and shot McCloud to death.

The man was taken to the hospital, his wife and two children were not injured.

The woman, believed to be the victim's nanny, is suspected of killing the child before setting fire to its parents' apartment.
CCTV appears to show the woman, dressed in a hijab, walking near a metro station with a head in her hands.
A police officer then intercepts her and wrestles her to the ground.
The suspect has been placed in psychiatric care to determine whether she is capable of understanding her actions, the Moscow Investigative Committee said in a statement (in Russian).
A criminal investigation was launched after the discovery of the remains of a child aged three to four, whose body bore traces of a violent death, in a charred flat on Narodnoye Opolcheniye Street in north-western Moscow, it added.
"According to preliminary information, the child's nanny, a citizen of one of the Central Asian states born in 1977, waited for the parents and elder child to leave the flat and then, for reasons not established, murdered the infant, set fire to the flat and left the scene," it added in the statement.
Police sources told Russian news agencies that the victim had been decapitated and the head removed from the scene by the nanny.
