NSA division chief beats adopted son to death

Brian O’Callaghan fought in Iraq, mastered Arabic and became a division chief at the National Security Agency. Last year, wanting a second child for their young family, he and his wife adopted a 3-year-old boy from South Korea.

“He was so loving of him,” a family member said.

It is a background that made allegations revealed in Montgomery County District Court on Tuesday seem all the more stunning: Alone with the boy — with his wife out of town, his other son in a different part of the house — O’Callaghan repeatedly struck the child, hitting him so hard that the boy died two days later.

“An absolutely horrific crime on an absolutely innocent young victim,” said Assistant State’s Attorney Donna Fenton, listing injuries to the boy’s head, neck and back. “Basically this child was beaten to death from head to toe.”

Homeless woman wants a ride from police to homeless shelter, gets taken to jail instead

A woman who wanted a ride to a homeless shelter spent the night at the Stark County jail instead.

According to jail records, the 33-year-old woman with no permanent address was at Walgreens at 4024 Fulton Drive NW in Jackson Township around 5:45 p.m. Sunday when she asked the store's staff to call police to take her to a homeless shelter.

When Jackson police arrived, officers advised her that their job was to take suspects to jail and not give free rides. The woman then demanded to be taken to jail, but officers said she had committed no crime.

She then approached the store pharmacy counter and yelled that she was going to rob the pharmacist. She then refused to leave the store unless she was under arrest, according to the jail report.

It's an absolute travesty how the homeless are treated. How a police officer can refuse this homeless woman a simple request for a ride to a shelter is beyond words. And then they go home to their wives, daughters, sisters, moms and other people they know and manage to keep up the facade that they are capable of loving people. Anyone that would treat the homeless in this way is severely lacking empathy. I feel sorry for the people in their life. /endrant

Pro-cockfighting group protests farm bill

LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) - A group of demonstrators gathered to protest a provision of the new farm bill in London Monday.

The protestors say they are unhappy with a portion of the bill that would make it a federal crime to attend an animal fight, or to bring a child under 16 to one.

They say the bill takes away their rights.

"It's up to us to protect the game foul community," said Craig Davis, President of the United Game Breeders Association. "We will not stand idly by and let this injustice happen to the Kentucky citizens or the citizens of any state."

Cockfighting is illegal in all 50 states, but is currently only a misdemeanor offense in Kentucky.

Obama issues new fuel-saving policy

President Obama will announce Tuesday that two government agencies will begin a new phase of greenhouse gas standards, a key component of his Climate Action Plan to reduce carbon emissions and improve the fuel efficiency of American trucks.

The president plans to direct the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation to develop the next phase of medium- and heavy-duty vehicle fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas standards by March 2016, during a morning visit to a distribution center in Upper Marlboro, Md.

These “heavy-duty vehicles” represented 4% of registered vehicles, but accounted for about 25% of greenhouse gas emissions in 2010, according to the White House. They are currently the second-largest source of on-road fuel use, after passenger cars and light trucks.

Obama’s first round of standards was finalized in September 2011, and is projected to save 530 million barrels of oil and an estimated $50 billion in fuel costs.

Daughter of Marines Graces Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue

AUSTIN, Texas — With parents who met while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, Hannah Ferguson seemed destined for a life in uniform.

Instead, the girl from rural Texas ended up as a model who is one of the featured rookies in the iconic Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue that will be released on Tuesday.

"My Dad has Sports Illustrated calendars in his shop. I would always flip through them and look at them and daydream about one day being able to do that. I never thought it would come true," she told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"My parents have been really supportive. Some people have asked, 'It is swimwear and you are showing a lot of skin. How do they feel about that?'

"They are happy that I am chasing my dream."

I love when people chase their dreams and reach them. It's very heartwarming.

Good for her.

What Do Women Want? Depends on Time of the Month

A meta-analysis of women’s preferences for mates suggests that ovulating women have evolved to prefer men who display sexy traits, such as a masculine body type and facial features, dominant behavior and certain scents — traits that are not typically desired in a long-term partner.

For the study, researchers at the University of California-Los Angeles (ULCA) analyzed dozens of published and unpublished studies on how women’s preferences for mates change throughout the menstrual cycle.

They found that the desire for these masculine characteristics — thought to be signs of high genetic quality — don’t last all month, just the few days in a woman’s cycle when she is most likely to pass on genes that give her offspring a better chance of surviving.

“Women sometimes get a bad rap for being fickle, but the changes they experience are not arbitrary,” said Dr. Martie Haselton, a professor of psychology and communication studies at UCLA and the paper’s senior author. “Women experience intricately patterned preference shifts even though they might not serve any function in the present.”

Kentucky snake handling preacher, reality TV star dead from snake bite

MIDDLESBORO, KY (WATE) - Jamie Coots, a preacher known for snake handling, as well as being the focus of a reality TV show, died Saturday after being bitten by a snake.

According to the Middlesboro Police Department, emergency crews responded to reports of a possible snakebite victim at a church on Evans Drive around 8:30 p.m., but say the victim had already left the scene by the time they arrived.

Police say they found Coots at his home with an apparent snakebite to his hand. Officials say EMS responders explained the dangers of not treating the wound, but that Coots still refused to be transferred.

Police and EMS returned to the scene an hour later to find Coots dead.

Coots was the pastor of Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name church in Middlesboro. He is also the subject of the National Geographic Channel series "Snake Salvation".
