Germany 2012: Europe's largest Wasserstoff (Hydrogen) gas station opens in Hamburg (2014 Update)

Translation from original by translate.google.com

The station should be able to deliver 750 kg of hydrogen per day. Thus Vattenfall will continue to build a nationwide infrastructure.
Die Welt 02/17/12

Wasserstoff ist die Nummer 1 (Hydrogen is #1)

Material for 20 fuel cell buses and cars

Half of it is produced directly at the station by electrolysis of water using renewable energy on site, the other half is delivered. The system is able to supply up to 20 fuel cell buses in Hamburg elevated railway and numerous cars from different manufacturers with hydrogen daily.

The location of the new site on a Oberbaumbruecke has its advantages: You can watch the Hamburg tank operations and become familiar with the new technology.

Europas grösste Wasserstoff-Tankstelle in Hamburg Hafencity, eröffnet im Februar 2012.

"Hydrogen is for us an important memory technology to integrate the growing proportion of electricity from wind power and photovoltaics in the German energy system," said Pieter Wasmuth, chief representative of Vattenfall. The cost of the futuristic building in the amount of ten million euros share Vattenfall and the Federal Ministry of Transport.

Establishment of a hydrogen infrastructure in Germany

"The gas station is visible proof that sustainable mobility is already possible," said the Secretary Bomba. "After more than 100 years of combustion engines technological era in the transport becomes tangible." The major advantage of hydrogen and fuel cell technology is that it is clean, efficient and powerful...

2014 Update:

Insights into the future

On September 23, 2014 we open the doors to our hydrogen station in Hamburg's HafenCity - Vattenfall invites you to a live sneak preview of the future.

Experts explain what normally goes on behind closed doors: How do we turn water into hydrogen? How does the lightest element we know find its way into the fuel tanks of hydrogen buses and cars? And what role does hydrogen play in the energy revolution? You can see electrolysers, different types of storage facilities, compressors and, of course, the hydrogen fuel dispensers themselves. See how a hydrogen bus is refuelled!

For visitors to the industry fairs H2Expo & WindEnergy Hamburg we are offering a trip to the hydrogen station on a fuel cell hybrid bus, the hydrogen-powered "SauberBus" operated by HOCHBAHN. The bus leaves Hamburg Messe, Central Entrance (Eingang Mitte), at 2 pm and 4 pm on September 23. The tour lasts approximately 60 minutes.

The number of maximum participants has been reached. Registration is therefore no longer possible. Thank you for your understanding.

It’s arrived: The evolution of clean power & data centers

Katie Fehrenbacher | Feb. 18, 2015

Apple’s solar farm in North Carolina. Credit: Apple.

The world’s largest internet companies are turning to clean power to run their data centers like never before. This month we saw huge clean power deals from Apple, including big solar projects planned in California and Arizona, and a big wind buy from Google to provide local power for its headquarters in Silicon Valley.

But it wasn’t always this way. It’s only been in the last several years that Apple, Google, Facebook and others have been embracing clean power as a viable option to provide a significant amount of power for their data centers, and it’s taken years for the power industry, and the internet companies themselves, to adjust to and learn about this emerging world...

...That’s why in late 2011 Apple started building its unusual and massive solar farms in the area. Built by SunPower, these solar farms now stretch across hundreds of acres and now generate more solar power than Apple needs for that facility. The company also has a fuel cell farm built beside the data center. Apple agreed to plug into the state’s grid, but it was also generating its own clean power that went back onto the grid and made up for its use of the dirty grid power.

Apple’s solar farms ended up putting pressure on local utility Duke Energy and the state to recognize that if there was ample clean power provided to these customers from the power grid, then they wouldn’t need to build their own. In late 2013, Duke Energy officially asked the state’s regulators if it could sell clean power from new sources to large energy customers that were willing to buy it — yes, thanks to restrictive regulations and an electricity industry that moves at a glacial pace, this formerly wasn’t allowed.

Now Duke Energy has a clean energy supply program in the state. And just this week, Duke Energy issued a request for proposal asking for project builders to build 50 MW worth of solar projects in the state...SNIP Continued

Japan to help companies that push hydrogen as electricity source

The Japan Times February 16, 2015

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe
takes the Toyota Hydrogen Mirai for a spin

The Japanese government is planning to support companies that help develop hydrogen-fueled electric power plants, earmarking budget funds of ¥2.05 billion for such projects in the next fiscal year.

Companies that build hydrogen-tanker ships, those that convert gas turbines to hydrogen use, and those studying the production of hydrogen from low-quality lignite coal may benefit from the funds, officials said on Sunday.

The need to develop new technology and the high costs involved are significant hurdles to the development of this environmentally friendly power source. Nevertheless, the government wants companies to build a test reactor by 2020 and to begin power generation a decade or so later.

A hydrogen filling station is pictured in Ebina, Kanagawa Prefecture, in December.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said in a policy speech to the Diet last Thursday that Japan is moving toward the “dream of a hydrogen-based society” and is accelerating the installation of hydrogen stations for fuel-cell vehicles, which run on electricity generated by burning hydrogen.

By commercializing hydrogen-powered electric power plants,..MORE

The Warmongering Record of Hillary Clinton "I urged him to bomb..."

GARY LEUPP | Counterpunch.org | February 11. 2015

Henry Kissinger and Hillary Clinton receive the Germany Freedom Award in 2009. Gero Breloer/AP

...Clinton as U.S. Secretary of State at that time knew that Libya was no threat to the U.S. She knew that Muammar Gadhafi had been closely cooperating with the U.S. in combating Islamist extremism. She probably realized that Gadhafi had a certain social base due in part to what by Middle Eastern standards was the relatively equitable distribution of oil income in Libya.

But she wanted to topple Gadhafi. Over the objections of Secretary of “Defense” Robert Gates but responding to the urgings of British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Nicholas Sarkozy, she advocated war. Why? Not for the reason advertised at the time. (Does this sound familiar?) Not because Gadhafy was preparing a massacre of the innocents in Benghazi, as had occurred in Rwanda in 1994. (That episode, and the charge that the “international community” had failed to intervene, was repeatedly referenced by Clinton and other top officials, as a shameful precedent that must not be repeated. It had also been deployed by Bill Clinton in 1999, when he waged war on Serbia, grossly exaggerating the extent of carnage in Kosovo and positing the immanent prospect of “genocide” to whip up public support. Such uses of the Rwandan case reflect gross cynicism.).

No, genocide was not the issue, in Libya any more than in Kosovo. According to the Washington Times, high-ranking U.S. officials indeed questioned whether there was evidence for such a scenario in Libya. The Defense Intelligence Agency estimated that a mere 2,000 Libyan troops armed with 12 tanks were heading to Benghazi, and had killed about 400 rebels by the time the U.S. and NATO attacked. It found evidence for troops firing on unarmed protestors but no evidence of mass killing. It did not have a good estimate on the number of civilians in Benghazi but had strong evidence that most had fled. It had intelligence that Gadhafy had ordered that troops not fire on civilians but only on armed rebels.

The Pentagon doubted that Gadhafi would risk world outrage by ordering a massacre. One intelligence officer told the Washington Times that the decision to bomb was made on the basis of “light intelligence.” Which is to say, lies, cherry-picked information such as a single statement by Gadhafi (relentlessly repeated in the corporate press echoing State Department proclamations) that he would “sanitize Libya one inch at a time” to “clear [the country] of these rats.” (Similar language, it was said, had been used by Hutu leaders in Rwanda.) Now that the rats in their innumerable rival militias control practically every square inch of Libya, preventing the emergence of an effective pro-western government, many at the Pentagon must be thinking how stupid Hillary was...

World's First Robot-Staffed Hotel to Open in Japan

The world's first robot hotel is being planned for a theme park in Japan
Adrian Bridge | Telegraph.co.uk | 03 Feb 2015

Would you like some Java?

Guests checking into a new hotel close to the Japanese city of Nagasaki this summer may find themselves complaining that the service is just a little .... robotic.

With due cause. In a paradigm-shifting development, the hotel in question, the Henn-na Hotel, will be partially staffed by what are termed “actroid" androids – remarkably human-like robots who will be able to greet, carry luggage to rooms, make cups of coffee – and even smile.

The new staff of Japan's Henn-na Hotel may look like this Geminoid F android, developed by Osaka University and ATR. Credit: Osaka University

The development, in a theme park, does not come as a surprise in a country which has long been at the forefront of technological innovation and which some years ago introduced Asimo, the planet’s most advanced humanoid robot capable of running, walking, waving and kicking a football.

Three of the uniformed actroids will serve as reception staff at the Henn-na Hotel

Actroid androids have been developed by Osaka University and manufactured by Kokoro, a branch of the company that licenses Hello Kitty. First unveiled in 2003, the model has been steadily refined with the current generation consisting mainly of robots that have been given the features (and mannerisms) of a young Japanese woman who, in addition to speaking (in Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English), will be able to make hand gestures, reciprocate eye movements (and no doubt gauge moods)...

...And if the experiment is successful, expect more where that came from.

Toshiba develops portable solar-powered hydrogen system for use in fuel cells

Portable Solar Hydrogen Fuel Cell Module -Credit: Toshiba Corp.

Toshiba Corp. has developed an energy supply system that may be the ultimate in eco-friendliness because it uses only sunlight and water, with no carbon dioxide emissions, to produce hydrogen.

Moreover, the system has a portable component that allows it to be transported to disaster-hit areas where normal utilities may not be operating.

The system involves using solar power to generate electricity, which is used to electrolyze water to produce hydrogen. The hydrogen can be stored in tanks and used in fuel cells to generate electricity and heat water during emergencies.

"Once the technology progresses further, we will be able to apply it to storage batteries for large-scale solar generation facilities (that can only generate power during the day) and hydrogen stations to refuel fuel-cell vehicles," said company President Hisao Tanaka.

Toshiba plans to begin selling the system in fiscal 2015...
