Interview-David Malone : Trade Deals and the Death of Democracy

A must hear interview that you won't get on US media. Dr. Julian Charles is an excellent host.

TPP, TTIP, TAFTA, TISA, ISDS? What does all this acronym soup of so-called "international trade agreements" mean for you and me? Nothing less, maintains our guest David Malone, than the Death of Democracy.

Warning us that these prosaically named and apparently benign "agreements" presage the effective takeover of nation states by global corporations, David Malone explains why he nevertheless believes there is still hope: if only we will leave behind the solutions of the past, and "fight the peace" together.

In a career spanning nearly twenty years, independent film-maker and author David Malone has produced and directed documentaries for both the BBC and Channel 4. His series Testing God was short-listed for the Royal Television Society best documentary series. In 2008, his production for the BBC, High Anxieties - The Mathematics of Chaos, was among the first documentaries to be made about the current financial crisis. He is is also author of the highly-regarded book The Debt Generation published in 2010, which critiqued the scandalous bailing out of the banks and the effete political system that allowed that to happen.

Hydrogen Energy Storage: A New Solution To the Renewable Energy Intermittency Problem

Mark Schiller, VP Proton OnSite July 16, 2014

The need for a complete energy storage solution is becoming more acute where fields of wind turbines are already generating gigawatts of electricity, often with a significant mismatch in grid power demand...

...Water electrolysis technology is the most flexible and tenable solution to store renewable energy on a large, long-term scale. Using excess renewable electricity the Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer splits water into its constituent parts, hydrogen and oxygen, that can be stored in common tanks. Hydrogen is a flexible energy medium and the technology to produce the gas is working today. Our challenge is to scale-up hydrogen generators to meet the demand of the growing renewable power industry...

How a proton exchange membrane splits water into its constituent parts.

...Hydrogen gas has the largest energy content of any fuel, making it a very good ‘vehicle’ for holding and distributing energy. With the ability to hold 120MJ/kg, a relatively small amount of hydrogen is needed to store significant amounts of energy. The stable chemistry of hydrogen also means you can store energy longer than any other medium..

A mapped comparison of alternative energy storage methods, in terms of capacity against discharge time

...Over the last few years, hydrogen is being taken more seriously by the power industry, as a solution to making renewable energy grid ready. One of the biggest benefits of hydrogen energy storage is that it’s scalable. A 2-MW hydrogen electrolyzer is the size of a shipping container and can be easily installed next to a field of wind turbines or a distribution substation. We have our megawatt prototype modules being tested in our manufacturing facility today. In Germany in particular, hydrogen energy storage is already beginning to be implemented into its growing renewable energy network...

Congressman on Classified 9/11 Documents: “It challenges you to re-think everything”

Congressmen Thomas Massie (R-KY), Walter Jones (R-NC), and Stephen F. Lynch (D-MA) have concerns about the 28 pages from the 9/11 congressional investigation report, classified to the public, that would provide more information to the general public.

Congressman Thomas Massie announced in a recent press conference:

“As I read it, and we all had our own experience, I had to stop every couple of pages and just sort of try to absorb and try to rearrange my understanding of history. “It challenges you to re-think everything. I think the whole country needs to go through that.”

Rep. Massie commented on his Facebook page:

“Before we involve ourselves in #Iraq, Congressmen and their constituents need to know more about the events leading up to 9/11. Understanding what enabled this tragedy to occur is fundamental to drafting a strategy for the Middle East.

That’s why I joined families of 9/11 victims and Congressman Walter Jones and Congressman Stephen Lynch at a press conference to promote the release of 28 classified pages from an official 9/11 report. Based on my reading of the documents, I am confident that making these 28 pages public would not damage our national security.”

Slashgear: Apple reportedly toying with idea of fuel cells in electronics

Jul 14, 2014

Battery life is a concern for anyone with a gadget, and as much as we want longer life — it’s just not happening on a hardware level. Companies like LG work clever software workarounds into devices like the G3, but the hardware fix still escapes us. Apple has reportedly partnered with a fuel cell company, and may be looking to bring their technology to our various devices.

Intelligent Energy is a company devoted to the fuel cell, which they claim via their site is scalable to just about any need. They’re so bent on mobile, they have a section of the site dedicated to letting the world know it’s possible to have a fuel cell on a mobile device. Perhaps most telling is this statement:

Our technology can be sized to suit your requirements and designed to power anything from a laptop to a mobile phone.

Why, Apple has all those products, don’t they? Details of the partnership weren’t leaked, but Intelligent Energy noted in a recent funding round they were working with a big-name “international electronics company”. Between the mystery partner who is now said to be Apple, and Intelligent Energy’s commitment to mobile, the pieces fit.

Rutgers Chemists Develop Technology to Produce Clean-Burning Hydrogen Fuel

New catalyst based on carbon nanotubes may rival cost-prohibitive platinum for reactions that split water into hydrogen and oxygen

NEW BRUNSWICK - Rutgers researchers have developed a technology that could overcome a major cost barrier to make clean-burning hydrogen fuel – a fuel that could replace expensive and environmentally harmful fossil fuels.

The new technology is a novel catalyst that performs almost as well as cost-prohibitive platinum for so-called electrolysis reactions, which use electric currents to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The Rutgers technology is also far more efficient than less-expensive catalysts investigated to-date.

“Hydrogen has long been expected to play a vital role in our future energy landscapes by mitigating, if not completely eliminating, our reliance on fossil fuels,” said Tewodros (Teddy) Asefa, associate professor of chemistry and chemical biology in the School of Arts and Sciences. “We have developed a sustainable chemical catalyst that, we hope with the right industry partner, can bring this vision to life.” ...

Tewodros (Teddy) Asefa

...Electrolysis, however, could produce hydrogen using electricity generated by renewable sources, such as solar, wind and hydro energy, or by carbon-neutral sources, such as nuclear energy. And even if fossil fuels were used for electrolysis, the higher efficiency and better emissions controls of large power plants could give hydrogen fuel cells an advantage over less efficient and more polluting gasoline and diesel engines in millions of vehicles and other applications...

Hyundai Electric Fuel Cell ix35 Covers 435 Miles On Single Tank Of Hydrogen

Antony Ingram Green Car Reports.com Jul 11, 2014

If there's one area that electric vehicles still lag their combustion counterparts, it's in the distance you can travel between stops to recharge. It's one area that companies producing fuel-cell vehicles will be keen to capitalize on too, and Hyundai has proven that long-distance ability with its Tucson Fuel Cell...

...Norwegian non-profit eco-pioneers Marius Bornstein and Arnt G. Hartvig took an example of the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell--the car's European moniker--from Norway's capital Oslo to Malmö in Sweden, passing via Gothenburg (Sweden) and Danish capital Copenhagen on the way...

...In European testing, the Tucson Fuel Cell is officially rated at 369 miles, meaning the duo beat the stated numbers despite the real-world conditions. Bornstein said the pair had originally planned to stop in Copenhagen, but realized the car was capable of going even further.

"To achieve this distance on just one tank of hydrogen shows the potential of this technology and the ability of the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell" he said after completing the drive. "I believe this is a world record."...snip...

2015 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell: Hydrogen-Powered Motoring for $499 a Month
AUSTIN LINDBERG Car and Driver.com November 2013

The Tucson Fuel Cell isn’t anything earth-shatteringly new, though. Hyundai sells the ix35 Fuel Cell—which is identical to the U.S.-spec model debuting at the Los Angeles auto show in every way save for its name—in Europe. The Tucson-badged model uses the same in-house-developed fuel-cell stack, lithium-polymer battery, and hydrogen tank capable of carrying 12.3 pounds of the gas as does its Euro-market counterpart. It also delivers the same 134 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque by means of the same electric motor.

CBC: TPP trade talks too secret, CA NDP MP Don Davies says

Deal would tie Canada to countries with forced labour and suppression of dissent, trade critic states
By Kirsty Kirkup, CBC News Posted: Jul 10, 2014

The NDP's trade critic says the Conservative government's negotiations on the TransPacific Partnership are unnecessarily secretive, and he's calling on the government to hold consultations on Canada's position in the 12-country talks.

Don Davies addressed about two dozen protesters outside a hotel in downtown Ottawa where negotiations have been held this week for the massive trade proposal commonly known as the TPP.

..."The TPP is billed as a next-generation agreement that will profoundly affect Canada's economy, our social policy and our international standing. Yet the Conservative government is conducting it with absolute secrecy," Davies said.

"I stand with the Canadians who are here today and others who believe that our trade policy should be transparent, it should be open and accountable and it should involve the people who will be affected by the issues."...

Onsite Hydrogen Production via Electrolysis

From ITM Power
http://www.itm-power.com/hydrogen-tv/

Hydrogen generated by water electrolysis is the cleanest fuel available today.

All that is needed is a water supply and an electricity supply, and this can be in the form of renewable energy.

The hydrogen is then produced onsite to prevent the need for transportation of fuel, thus eliminating the usual process of trucking fuel to where it is required, and saving emissions.

When used, the only emission is water, so it is a closed cycle and the cleanest form of fuel.

Urban Farming: 6,000 Pounds of Food on 1/10 Acre

Over 6,000 pounds of food per year, on 1/10 acre located just 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. The Dervaes family grows over 400 species of plants, 4,300 pounds of vegetable food, 900 chicken and 1,000 duck eggs, 25 lbs of honey, plus seasonal fruits throughout the year.

From 1/10th of an acre, four people manage to get over 90% of their daily food and the family reports earnings of $20,000 per year (AFTER they eat from what is produced). This is done without the use of the expensive & destructive synthetic chemicals associated with industrial mono-cropping, while simultaneously improving the fertility and overall condition of the land being used to grow this food on. Scaled up to an acre, that would equal $200,000 per year!
