Toyota unveils carbon neutral hydrogen supply chain pilot

Toyota joins Japanese effort to test full-fledged hydrogen supply chain
Trial to use wind energy and electrolysis to create carbon-neutral environment

Cleantech Canada Staff September 8, 2015

TOKYO—Toyota Motor Corp. has announced it will take part in a Japanese public and private sector effort to test hydrogen on a large scale. The trial will take place south of Tokyo near Yokohama and Kawasaki.

The automaker, which has been producing and working to commercialize hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, noted the use of fossil fuels for transportation as well as power and heat generation, accounts for over half of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, producing nearly 25 gigatons of carbon dioxide annually.

“Realizing the importance of taking on this challenge by establishing carbon-neutral supply chains across different sectors (from power generation to vehicle fueling) as soon as possible, major corporate and public sector partners in Japan have decided to work together,” Toyota said.

“Hydrogen has the potential to permanently change the way we generate and use power,” the company added...snip

Why the rich Gulf states are saying no to Syria’s refugees

news.com.au Sep 9, 2015

THESE countries boast an embarrassment of riches.

But as European governments face global scrutiny over their struggle to accommodate a mass exodus of refugees from war-torn Syria, what are the rich Gulf nations doing to help?

Absolutely nothing.

Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain have offered zero resettlement places to Syrian refugees, according to new data from Amnesty International.

The Dubai skyline in the United Arab Emirates, a rich neighbour to Syria that hasn’t taken in a single war refugee.

The apparent indifference of the Gulf states is especially blunt considering they are some of the nearest neighbours to devastated Syria, where civil war and the threat of Islamic State militants have displaced millions of people.

Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror to become a Netflix show

Exclusive: Sources say the US streaming giant has agreed terms to make original episodes of the hit dystopian drama

RadioTimes.com | Ben Dowell | 7 September 2015

Charlie Brooker's dystopian drama series Black Mirror has been snapped up by Netflix, RadioTimes.com understands.

The streaming giant is understood to have agreed terms with Brooker and his independent production company House of Tomorrow to make "multiple episodes” of the dystopian drama, according to sources involved in the negotiations.

Netflix has already shown episodes of the drama, which first aired on Channel 4, in the US. The series has proved a word-of-mouth hit since launching in December, with some fans even holding Black Mirror viewing parties.

As RadioTimes.com revealed in May, Netflix was in talks with Brooker and House of Tomorrow over a possible deal, which has reportedly progressed. It is understood that Brooker is currently writing scripts for a new run of the Channel 4-originated drama which explores the dark and troubling aspects of technology...

Food industry enlisted academics in GMO lobbying war, emails show

NY Times.com Sep 6 2015

WASHINGTON - At Monsanto, sales of genetically modified seeds were steadily rising. But executives at the company’s St. Louis headquarters were privately worried about attacks on the safety of their products.

So Monsanto, the world’s largest seed company, and its industry partners retooled their lobbying and public relations strategy to spotlight a rarefied group of advocates: academics, brought in for the gloss of impartiality and weight of authority that come with a professor’s pedigree.

“Professors/researchers/scientists have a big white hat in this debate and support in their states, from politicians to producers,” Bill Mashek, a vice president at Ketchum, a public relations firm hired by the biotechnology industry, said in an email to a University of Florida professor. “Keep it up!”

And the industry has.

Corporations have poured money into universities to fund research for decades, but now, the debate over bioengineered foods has escalated into a billion-dollar food industry war. Companies like Monsanto are squaring off against major organic firms like Stonyfield Farm, the yogurt company, and both sides have aggressively recruited academic researchers, emails obtained through open records laws show...

Ad van Wijk: “The energy sector has nothing to do with energy companies anymore”

Energypost.eu |September 2, 2015 | Sonja van Renssen

Dr. Ad van Wijk, PhD

“The energy sector will develop outside of energy companies,” predicts Ad van Wijk, Professor for Future Energy Systems at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Academic, sustainable energy entrepreneur and innovator, one of Europe’s most influential thinkers describes the paradigm shifts he sees: a switch to LED lighting, a DC grid, and fuel cell cars, plus the emergence of the Internet of Things and 3D printing.

Originally a physicist, with a PhD in wind energy and electricity production, Van Wijk went on to found consultancy Ecofys in 1984. It later became part of Econcern, a company founded by Van Wijk, which he wanted to turn into “the Shell of renewable energy”. In its heyday it owned a wide range of activities and assets, including an offshore wind farm, several multi-MW solar farms, a bio-methanol plant, energy-producing greenhouses, and a production company making electric vehicles. It also launched a tool to visualise energy consumption in buildings. Thanks to Econcern, Van Wijk was elected Entrepreneur of the Year in the Netherlands in 2007 and Top Executive of the year in 2008. The company turned out to be too ambitious, however, and went bankrupt the next year when the economic crisis hit. Ecofys and several other parts of the business were bought by Dutch utility Eneco...

Q: What is your vision for the future of our energy system?
snip

Q: What is the size of the efficiency improvement from LED lighting?
snip

Q: Apart from LED, what are the other two paradigm shifts you see coming?
snip

Q: And what about your final big paradigm shift?

A: Third, is the fuel cell car. Many car manufacturers are now working on this and it is being introduced in California, Germany, South Korea and Japan. The fuel cell car can produce electricity – it is an electric car with an electric motor – but the power comes not from the car’s batteries but is produced on board by a fuel cell converting hydrogen to electricity. The efficiency of this fuel cell is high, 60%.

The idea is that when this car is parked somewhere, it can also produce the electricity for your house, the grid, your office etc. Indeed every fuel cell engine, with about 100kW, can provide the electricity for 100 houses, not just one. The potential electricity production capacity of our cars – if they became fuel cell cars – is ten times that of our power plants worldwide. In Europe, we buy as much electricity production capacity in cars every year, as twice our power plants.

CHAdeMO plug on a Toyota Hydrogen Mirai-Plug your house into your car!
and be powered for up to a week on a full tank of H2

So we can replace our power plants by cars. You could build a parking lot for example, where you connect cars to a hydrogen production facility and to the electricity grid. When there is a surplus of electricity production from wind or solar, you produce hydrogen and store it in the tank of the car. When there is less electricity production, the car can produce the electricity that is needed.

Q: The car becomes both a store and producer of electricity?

A: Yes...snip

BBC: Could diesel made from air help tackle climate change?

BBC Padraig Belton

Making diesel out of thin air sounds like something from science fiction.

But small companies in Germany and Canada are doing precisely this - capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) and finding ways to sell it.

How a large-scale carbon dioxide capture plant might look

German company Sunfire produced its first batches of so-called e-diesel in April. Federal Minister of Education and Research, Johanna Wanka, put a few litres in her car, to celebrate.

And the Canadian company Carbon Engineering has just built a pilot plant to suck one to two tonnes of carbon dioxide from the air daily, turning it into 500 litres of diesel. The process requires electricity, but if the start-ups use renewable electricity they can produce diesel that is carbon neutral...

Price at the pump

...But a lot depends on government policy. The actual price of the fuel can be as low as 30% of what we pay at the pump - the rest of the cost is made up of fuel duty, VAT, and the retailer's profit margin...snip

Mayo-Gate: The US government is trying to take down egg-free mayonnaise

Jane Mountain, Inhabitat.com 09/04/15

A group appointed by the U.S. government tried to destroy a Silicon Valley start-up after concluding that the plant-based food company was “a crisis and major threat to the future” of the $5.5-billion-a-year egg industry in the U.S. A series of emails obtained under the Freedom of Information Act shows the American Egg Board (AEB), a US department official, and egg industry executives working together to bring down Hampton Creek who make vegan mayo, plant-based egg replacer and other egg-free products. Think things have gone too far?

The 600 pages of emails, obtained by MIT FOIA expert Ryan Shapiro, revealed the plans made between the AEB, the USDA and the egg industry to eliminate Hampton Creek, manufacturer of the egg-free Just Mayo. Outgoing head of the AEB advised Unilever on a lawsuit against Hampton Court to have “mayo” removed from their labeling. The USDA’s national supervisor of shell eggs later advised the AEB to reach out to the FDA about Just Mayo’s labeling.

The AEB also used their influence, and hired a private consultant, to persuade Whole Foods to drop Just Mayo from its shelves – Whole Foods still sells the product. To undermine Hampton Creek’s Beyond Eggs product, the AEB’s research arm the Egg Nutrition Center, hired a private consultant, Gilbert Leveille, to test the patent for the product. “Were I in your position I would focus on nutritional quality and on the emerging science, much of which ENC has sponsored,” Leveille concluded...snip

A US government-appointed agricultural body tried to crush a Silicon Valley food startup after concluding the company represented a “major threat” and “crisis” for the $5.5bn-a-year egg industry, according to documents obtained by the Guardian.

In potential conflict with rules that govern how it can spend its funds, the American Egg Board (AEB) lobbied for a concerted attack on Hampton Creek, a food company that has created a low-cost plant-based egg replacement and the maker of Just Mayo, a mayonnaise alternative.

In a series of emails obtained under the Freedom of Information Act (Foia), AEB staff, a US department of agriculture official and egg industry executives attempted to orchestrate the attack.

The documents were obtained by Ryan Shapiro, a Foia expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Shapiro’s Washington DC-based Foia-specialist attorney, Jeffrey Light, and passed to Hampton Creek.

Among the efforts coordinated between the AEB, the USDA and the egg industry:

Outgoing AEB head Joanne Ivy advised Unilever on how to proceed against Hampton Creek after the food giant filed a false advertising lawsuit against its rival last year...snip

Just Mayo: Egg group scrambled over eggless mayo maker

By Candice Choi Associated Press 09/02/2015

NEW YORK -- A San Francisco company that makes an eggless mayonnaise alternative has the U.S. egg industry scrambling.

The American Egg Board, which is responsible for the "Incredible, Edible Egg" slogan, waged a campaign to counter the emergence of Hampton Creek's Just Mayo spread, and even tried to prevent its sale at Whole Foods grocery stores, according to documents provided to The Associated Press.

The documents offer a sometimes comic glimpse into the alarm the egg group felt about the startup and its CEO, Josh Tetrick, who has said he wants to make the food system more environmentally friendly by replacing the eggs in an array of foods with plant-based alternatives...snip

Kawasaki Industries is working to create a supply chain for liquefied hydrogen

Kawasaki Heavy fighting for place in 'hydrogen economy'

YOKO SHOJI & HISASHI IWATO September 3, 2015 Nikkei Asian Review

TOKYO -- Kawasaki Heavy Industries is working to create a supply chain for liquefied hydrogen, a fuel it sees as a major new energy source. The key to its success lies in developing a network of allies that can demonstrate the viability of the "hydrogen economy."

Kawasaki Heavy hopes to become a leader in setting standards for the transport of hydrogen, which will rely heavily on tankers like the one in this artist's rendering

The Japanese company is joining forces with Electric Power Development, known as J-Power, to produce hydrogen. The technology to transport the liquefied fuel will come through an alliance with energy company Iwatani. It has also begun a "smart community" project with Obayashi, a construction company, aimed at generating electricity from hydrogen and supplying it to the community.

Kawasaki Heavy has many of the technologies needed to handle hydrogen, from production to supply, but creating a comprehensive hydrogen infrastructure by itself would be impossible, so the company is expanding its partnerships...snip
