Bob Marley & The Wailers: "Concrete Jungle" on BBC's The Old Grey Whistle Test 1973 Rare & New

Amazing rare video from 1973 when The Wailers were featured on The Old Grey Whistle Test

No chains around my feet
But I'm not free
I know I am bound here in captivity;
Never known what happiness is;
I've never known what sweet caress is yeah
Still, I'll be always laughing like a clown;
Oh someone help me 'cause I-
I've got to pick myself from off the ground
In this ya concrete jungle
I said, what do you got for me now?
Concrete jungle, why won't you let me be now?

The prickly skin of the cactus is helping to make better electric car fuel cells

Businessinsider.com.au | Chris Pash | Apr 29, 2016

A new type of membrane, inspired by the cactus, has the potential to significantly boost the performance of fuel cells for the electric vehicle industry.

The membrane was developed by scientists from Australia’s peak science body, the CSIRO, and Hanyang University in Korea.

A paper in the journal Nature says the membrane can improve the efficiency of fuel cells by a factor of four in hot conditions.

The skin works in a similar way to a cactus plant, which thrives by retaining water in harsh and arid environments, according to CSIRO researcher and co-author Dr Aaron Thornton,

“Fuel cells, like the ones used in electric vehicles, generate energy by mixing together simple gases, like hydrogen and oxygen,” says Dr Thornton.

However, the proton exchange membrane fuel cells need to stay constantly hydrated to be efficient...snip

BBC: Isle of Wight test for 'world first' hydrogen-powered boat

BBC 27 April 2016

A boat believed to be among the first in the world to use a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine has undergone a sea trial.

The catamaran Cheetah set off from Ventnor earlier and took eight hours to circumnavigate the Isle of Wight.

Boatbuilder Cheetah Marine said it was the culmination of a three-year project to find "fuel for the future".

The firm said no greenhouse gases were emitted by the outboard engine, which produced only water vapour.

Lucy Strevens, of Cheetah Marine, said: "Previously craft have been powered by hydrogen fuel cells, but it doesn't appear there's been a boat running on internal combustion."

Hydrogen internal combustion engine

*Burns hydrogen to produce water as the only waste product
*Differs from hydrogen fuel cell systems which use an electro-chemical reaction to produce electricity..snip

New Flyer debuts first 60-foot hydrogen fuel-cell bus

April 20, 2016: New Flyer of America, a subsidiary of New Flyer Industries Inc., conducted the inaugural road demonstration of the Xcelsior® XHE60 heavy-duty articulated fuel-cell transit bus. Representatives from two major transit authorities - Alameda County Transit (AC Transit) of Oakland, Calif., and Metro Transit of Minneapolis, participated in the vehicle’s debut and demonstration.

Based on its Buy America-compliant and proven Xcelsior® X60 heavy-duty transit bus platform, New Flyer partnered with Ballard Power Systems Inc. and Siemens to develop the propulsion system. The bus will be operated in revenue service by AC Transit for 22 months following the completion of a comprehensive evaluation at the FTA’s Altoona test facility. New Flyer intends to offer these green hydrogen fuel-cell-electric 60-foot buses to customers throughout the U.S. and Canada, following this process.

The propulsion system includes a combination of batteries, a fuel cell and hydrogen storage that allows the fuel cell to operate at a relative steady-state, while the batteries capture both braking energy and provide power for bus acceleration. Ballard Power Systems is supplying its nextgeneration fuel-cell power plant that is smaller, lighter and less expensive than existing models. The bus is targeted to have a range greater than 250 miles without refueling or recharging...snip

...“The New Flyer XHE60 fuel cell bus is truly a first of kind in the zero-emissions class of vehicles”, noted Paul Smith, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “With potential loading of over 120 passengers, this zero emissions 60-foot articulated fuel cell bus offers tremendous greenhouse gas (GHG) and emissions reductions, with the operational capabilities of no other transit vehicle in the world. We are proud of what our engineers and partner suppliers have accomplished, and thank the FTA for their active sponsorship of this next generation program”

Sure, you could put 3+ tons of batteries into this bus. But the batteries would then have to push around an extra 6,000+ pounds. And how long would it be offline to charge? This bus is ready to go in ~5 minutes

Guardian-After drones: the indelible mark of America's remote control warfare

The Guardian | Spencer Ackerman | Thursday 21 April 2016

The strikes last a moment, but the consequences last forever. Six families explain how Obama’s secret drone war has left them struggling for answers after loved ones were wiped out without warning

Nabila’s favorite memories of her grandmother come from weddings. It didn’t matter who was getting married – relative or neighbor – her grandmother, Mamana, was an active participant, owing to her matriarchal perch above their village.

Mamana was as responsible as she was festive. An uneducated woman, she was the local midwife, and served as an impromptu primary care physician, even a veterinarian, when the need arose.

On a fall afternoon in 2012, Mamana called Nabila and a squad of her siblings and cousins outside to the family’s okra fields, part of their sprawling garden in tribal Pakistan. It was about to be the Eid festival and the Rehman family needed to gather and prepare vegetables. Nabila, nine years old, had set to work when the drone fired its missiles.

A dark plume of dust rose from the garden and mixed with acrid smoke. It spared Nabila and the other children the sight of their grandmother’s mutilated corpse.

Her older cousins, all male, ran to help the screaming children. Nabila’s hand and her arm were injured with burns and shrapnel. Her three-year-old brother, Safdar, who was watching the harvest from the roof of their home, had fallen to the ground, breaking bones in his chest and shoulders. The teenagers had gotten Nabila and some of the others out of the way when the second round of missiles hit, in what the CIA refers to as a “double-tap”, to make sure it kills its targets...snip

TRUE ZERO Opens the LARGEST Hydrogen NETWORK in the World with Unprecedented Speed

When phase one of the True Zero Network is complete, the CO2 reductions could be equivalent to planting a forest nearly the size of San Francisco

Helping to cut the ribbon (April 21st) at the recently opened True Zero hydrogen-fuel station in the San Joaquin Valley are (from l): Commissioner Janea Scott of the California Energy Commission; Mary Nichols, Chair of the California Air Resources Board; Joel Ewanick, CEO of First Element Fuel, True Zero's parent; Dr. Shane Stephens, First Element CDO; Ghassan Sleiman, First Element VP; John Harris, owner of Harris Ranch Co. and Tyson Eckerle, Deputy Dir. for ZEV Infrastructure, Office of Gov. Jerry Brown.

IRVINE, Calif., April 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Significantly larger numbers of electric fuel-cell cars will go on sale in California this year following decades of hard work by thousands of automotive engineers, policymakers, and government-agency personnel. The simultaneous launch of the True Zero (www.truezero.com) Network, a series of hydrogen-charge stations being established by start-up FirstElement Fuel Inc. (www.firstelementfuel.com), will help eliminate the major roadblock facing these types of cars: anxiety over finding a reliable place to charge.

"In the past the lack of a fueling network kept fuel-cell vehicles off the road, and has been hampering activity in recent years," explained Joel Ewanick, chief executive officer of Irvine-based FirstElement Fuel. "Soon, a short stop for a four-minute charge of True Zero hydrogen will enable drivers of all-electric fuel-cell cars to confidently get to their destination without the worry of range anxiety."

The first 15 True Zero stations (photos at www.truezero.com/images/) were brought online at an unprecedented speed and scale throughout Silicon Valley, the greater Los Angeles area, Lake Tahoe area, and Harris Ranch in the San Joaquin Valley. An additional four stations are expected to be online by year's end. The projects are being funded in large part by grants from the California Energy Commission, South Coast AQMD and Bay Area AQMD, as well as partnerships with automotive firms Toyota and Honda who are first to market with fuel-cell electric vehicles. This network gives confidence to the hydrogen community that the industry can quickly bring on line the required stations to meet the demand and timing of the OEM's...snip

Hydrogen Buses Arrive In Ohio, Naturally Media And Politicians “Drink Exhaust”

Inside EV's | Jay Cole | April 21, 2016

While we can debate the relative value of the hydrogen fuel call passenger car versus the endless onslaught of better and better plug-in vehicles, but in the public and commercial transportation game – fuel cell technology makes a lot of sense, saving a lot of emissions from needlessly entering the environment.

This week Ohio’s first hydrogen bus hit the roads, serving riders on Ohio State’s campus for the next ~12 months, as the university will collect data on the program. A second bus is also to be delivered shortly to Penn State University’s Altoona Bus Testing and Research Center.

Over the course of the next 24 months, 10 buses in total will be deployed by SARTA (Stark Area Regional Transit Authority). Once delivered, it will be the 3rd largest operation fleet of fuel cell buses in the country, and largest outside California...snip

Besides the environmental benefits, the buses are about twice as efficient (~9 MPG) than their internal combustion brothers…meaning the monetary breakeven point would arrive just after travelling a scant ~3 million miles. But pricing is sure to come down with future adoption.

“When large-screen TVs first came out, they were very expensive. Now you can go to Walmart and get one out of a vending machine for a quarter (you should see how large the vending machines are though),” SARTA Executive Director and CEO Kirt Conrad said. “We’re seeing the same thing with this technology.”

Hydrogen can scale. Batteries can too, but WEIGHT. The more a battery weighs, the more energy is used to cart around the battery.

Noam Chomsky Defends WikiLeaks and Declassifying Information-"Assange should be given a medal"

Noam Chomsky had a complex answer when asked if he sees a difference in the role technology companies play compared to Washington lawmakers in protecting and encouraging privacy:

“WikiLeaks is a democratizing force. It’s giving individuals access to decisions and thinking by their representatives. In a democracy that ought to be reflexive. But on the contrary. WikiLeaks is under heavy attack by the government, and corporations are participating in that by closing down their websites. But Julian Assange shouldn’t be the subject of grand jury hearings. He should be given a medal. He’s contributing to democracy.”

Assange and others established WikiLeaks in 2006. Since the release of the Chelsea Manning material, U.S. authorities began a long-term investigation of WikiLeaks and Assange, aiming to prosecute them under the Espionage Act of 1917.

However, classification is nothing new.

“Long before the technology revolution there was declassficifation of documents and ... anybody who’s worked through the declassified record can see very clearly that the reason for classification is very rarely to protect the state or society from enemies. Most of the time it’s to protect the state from its citizens,” explained Chomsky. “So they don’t know what the government’s doing. ... Which raises the question: Should we even have the classification system? Why shouldn’t these things be open?”

Chomsky did acknowledge that an exception to the unnecessary classified documents is copyright protection. “There are things that we want to keep secret like the characteristics of your latest fighter plane or something like that,” he said.
