Pebble execs tell ‘investors’ Murkowski and Sullivan are no barrier to controversial mine
Pebble CEO Tom Collier thought he was talking to a pair of potential investors in the Pebble Mine, a controversial project at the headwaters of Bristol Bay.
Collier told the pair they don’t have to worry about Alaska’s U.S. senators blocking the project. Lisa Murkowski had expressed concerns that the mine proposal did not meet environmental standards, but Collier said she’s just trying to satisfy constituents on both sides of the issue.
“The way that Sen. Murkowski has done that is that when she’s asked a question she says things that don’t sound supportive of Pebble, OK?” Collier said in a video conference call that was secretly recorded on Aug. 24. “But when it comes time to vote, when it comes time to do something, she never does anything to hurt Pebble. Never.”

One of the most important, but least discussed, constitutional amendments made government more responsive by greatly shortening the time outgoing elected officials have a role in passing laws.
A “lame-duck session” happens when Congress meets after an election, when these outgoing members still have voting powers to approve laws, and in the case of the Senate, approve nominees from the Executive Branch.
The Congressional Research Service traces the phrase “lame duck” to the British during the Colonial era, when it was used to describe businessmen who had financial troubles and who resembled wounded game birds. In the 1830s, “lame duck” started to be used to describe American politicians had lost an election, or decided not to run for re-election, but still held office for a brief period.
Today, the session period usually lasts from mid-November to the Christmas period in election years, but it can extend to January 2nd of the following year. On the following day, January 3, a new session begins and every other year it contains new members of Congress.

Ghislaine Maxwell's answers to questions about the sex-trafficking operation she allegedly ran with the late Jeffrey Epstein were made public Thursday, as a federal court released Maxwell's 2016 deposition. The transcript is more than 400 pages long, but it has been redacted to protect the privacy of some people it mentions.
The transcript is finally being unsealed after a back-and-forth legal battle between Maxwell and Virginia Giuffre, who has accused Maxwell, Epstein and others of sexually abusing her when she was a minor. Court documents allege that Maxwell procured young girls for the late Epstein to have sex with – and that the pair also ordered girls and young women to have sex with rich and powerful men.

How many times a day does a man masturbate? So what! His only crime was he didn't know how to use Zoom correctly. So have your giggles puritanical America. I remember when our first Black woman Surgeon General, M. Joycelyn Elders, was fired because she suggested that young girls learn about masturbation in sex ed .... because she made too much GD sense for the RW fundies ... maybe someone should have asked amy con-me BARRett if she agreed wit scalia on masturbation? So maybe masturbation too will become a crime? Jeffrey ... come back on the TV and hold your head up high (not saying the head that should remain unseen).... you have nothing to be ashamed of. The view of masturbation as benign and beneficial is a new one. The Judeo-Christian tradition has long been hostile towards self-pleasure, at least for men. The Talmud compares spilling seed to spilling blood; the Zohar (the central work of Kabbalah) calls it the most evil act a man can commit. The traditional Christian view was no more tolerant; Catholic and Protestant authorities framed masturbation as a deeply sinful (though forgivable) waste of precious semen. Women were left out of these prohibitions for the obvious reason that most male religious authorities didn't consider the possibility that women were capable of or interested in giving themselves orgasms.
The campaign against masturbation became medicalized in the middle of the 19th century. Health reformers like Sylvester Graham (of the cracker) and John Harvey Kellogg (of the cereal) warned against the feminizing and enervating effects of male masturbation, describing it not as a sin but as a habit that could rob boys of their vital life force. At the same time, doctors began to warn of something theologians either hadn't considered or dared to mention: the dangers of female self-pleasure. Beginning in 1858, Dr. Isaac Baker-Brown—the president of the Medical Society of London—began to encourage surgical clitoridectomies to prevent hysteria, epilepsy, mania and even death that would surely follow as a consequence of the stimulation of the clitoris.
. At the same time, Granville, Baker-Brown, and their peers worried that a woman who learned to give herself sexual pleasure might pursue self-sufficiency in other areas. At a time of rising male anxiety about feminist demands for suffrage, female masturbation became an unsettling symbol of women's independence.
More than a century later, masturbation remains a cultural battleground. Many progressives were bewildered by Antonin Scalia's blistering 2003 dissent in Lawrence v Texas, in which he warned that state laws against evils such as "adult incest, prostitution, masturbation, adultery, fornication, and bestiality" might be invalidated as a result of the decision. Why, liberals wondered, was masturbation included on that list? The answer is simple: masturbation remains not only a grave sin in the eyes of the Catholic Church to which Scalia belongs, but its acceptance as benign and healthy is perhaps the foundational error of modern sexual culture.
The contemporary catechism of the church doesn't mention the waste of seed. Rather, heavily influenced by the late John Paul II's "theology of the body," it insists that our sexuality is intended for one purpose: "the relationship of one person to another, in the complete and lifelong mutual gift of a man and a woman." Evangelical Protestants often make the same case; the anti-porn ministry XXX Church teaches that "It is a selfish act that pleases no one but you. God created sex to be between a man and his wife. Not a man and his girlfriend and not a man or woman with himself or herself."
As religious conservatives see it, the great mistake we make when we masturbate is to claim our sexuality as ours alone. All sexual activity must be about "mutual self-giving" between a husband and a wife, the church claims, arguing that masturbation is "an intrinsically and gravely disordered action." Since masturbation is the first sexual act in which most people voluntarily engage, it is in a very real sense the original sexual sin from which all the others—based as they are on this mistaken sense of autonomy—flow. On the right, opposition to the idea of masturbation as an acceptable practice is growing rather than declining. Dr James Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, long claimed that the practice was essentially benign. Since his retirement, the organization—a flagship for social conservatism—has changed its tune, now arguing firmly that "self-gratification is inconsistent with the purpose, goal and basic nature of sex.

Woman to lead the landmark restaurant's kitchen
One question. Why did it take so long? But hey, congrats are really due. It is a tough career for a woman to move up in the professional ranks and she just did that.

For the first time in almost two decades, Commander’s Palace has a new chef. For the first time in the famous restaurant’s long history that chef is a woman.
Tory McPhail, executive chef since 2002, has resigned and is moving to Montana, where he will work with a local restaurant group in the mountain town of Bozeman.
His successor at Commander’s Palace is Meg Bickford, who was previously executive sous chef. Bickford, 34, has risen through the ranks at Commander's Palace and is now the first woman to lead the landmark restaurant’s kitchen.

Conversion of pro-life voter to Joe Biden! Yes, you heard me right.
This is one amazing story, not mine but my neighbor friend. I will call her Mary. She is around 70 years old.
Living in the U.P. of MI, very rural, very Red, very poor, especially in the 1960's when Mary got married. She married straight off her farm at the age of 17 and got pregnant right away. Her overbearing mother in law decided that her son was starting a family too soon. She decided that my friend should have an abortion. Mary did not want one but her husband told her to get one so she obeyed. Mary was and still is a very devout Evangelical Christian. She still suffers PTSD from that day. I won't go into her descriptions however if you could see her tell it in her face as if she were right back there experiencing every second of her experience. You see, she had to have a back room abortion because Roe v Wade had not been decided and abortion was illegal. Mary nearly died. She was 4 weeks in the hospital from a unsafe abortion. Well, she punished herself her whole life over it and so did all her good Christian family and friends. She caught all blame, the mental anguish over something that was NEVER HER CHOICE.
She knows that I am pro choice, lefty democratic socialist. I told her that if I were there with her I would have advised her not to have the abortion. I would have done my best to help her. IT SHOULD BE THE WOMAN'S CHOICE. PERIOD. It is her life.
So we talked about the election and how she has always voted one issue, pro-life. She voted for Huckabee. I asked her if she ever thought about that poor young girl sitting on that toilet in that dirty motel room... alone and being forced into something, against her will and moral judgement. The most important decision of her lifetime, should be her own. I asked what will happen when you take away Roe? You won't get rid of abortions just because a new SC Justice gets on the court. "Those days will happen again for poor young girls just like you Mary." I asked Mary if she would like for that to happen to another woman. She said, "I never thought about that." No one in pro-life world ever considers the woman. Not even Mary, she always saw herself as a murderer and not the victim of these monsters running her life. They used her. The pro-life movement used her.
We talked about abortion and I provided some data about how the goal is to reduce abortion (Obama did it) by the use of education, free contraceptives for young people, ACA expansion for women's healthcare .... these all have reduced abortion, improved health and the health of newborns as well and we can do more using our brains to solve problems instead of speaking in tongues. Also, abortion laws would protect the young Mary from being forced into abortion because laws would protect her by keeping them safe and legal. No doctor would perform a abortion an a woman who did not want one!
She called me yesterday to tell me she is VOTING FOR BIDEN! She prayed it out with her husband who is still going to vote for trump(a kind, wonderful old farmer, very conservative but such a good neighbor to us). She divorced the first abusive guy after a few years and a couple of kids later. The final straw was that one of her son's from her first marriage called to say if Biden loses he will lose his healthcare because ... preexisting conditions where his meds would cost $1,000 per month and he would die without them.
That's it! She put LOVE first! She showed love for that broken young girl, that had no one, that was her. Mary held her in her heart for the first time, without pain and guilt and loved her. And I loved that young girl right along with her. She put LOVE first, her son. Mary wants her son to have his medicine, She told me even if trump has a plan even if it takes 6 months her son will be dead because he can't afford the medicine and the stress alone would kill him. A true mother's love. LOVE FIRST, a far better message than America first.
This vote is healing her, believe me. Mary is a special person. "I have a feeling that this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship'!
The facade is crumbling for the religious right. Mary has new eyes. Watch out world. Her love has been awakened.
