How American women got stuck in the kitchen

The IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook shows the cost of having no federal paid leave programme

IN 1986, “American Women in Transition”, a study by the Russell Sage Foundation, described the vast changes then afoot in American society. Some twenty years previously, it says, in what sometimes reads as old-fashioned language, few mothers had jobs; by the early 1980s “three fifths of wives with school-age children were working outside the home”. This extraordinary change was reflected in the popular culture of the 1980s, from movies like “Working Girl” and “9 to 5” to books like Helen Gurley Brown’s “Having it all”.

Back then, America led most of the rich world in terms of the proportion of women who worked. In 1985, 70% of American women aged between 25 and 54 were in the labour market (either in work or looking for it). That compared with 57% in Australia and 59% in Germany. But the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook, published this week, shows how these countries have caught up with America and overtaken it. While the proportion of “prime age” women in the labour market in the United States is now 74%, in Australia it is 76% and in Germany it is 83%.

Rather, America seems to have fallen behind because it has failed to introduce policies that make it easier for women to stay in work after they have had children. In its report the IMF says that the “striking difference” between women in European countries and America “can be attributed to the more supportive policy changes in Europe.” Its authors single out two policy areas in particular: access to affordable care for both young children and old people and paid parental leave.

The difference on paid leave is especially stark. European countries have introduced and expanded laws that require companies to give parents paid time off after the birth or adoption of a child. Employers in the EU must offer a minimum paid maternity leave of 14 weeks; many countries mandate for more than that and also provide paternity leave, thus reducing companies’ reluctance to employ women of childbearing age. America has remained almost the only developed country to have no national paid parental leave at all.

Jimmy Carter, 93, talks about his new book: 'Faith'

Source: Religious News Service, by Adelle M. Banks

In his 32nd book, titled simply “Faith,” Jimmy Carter looks at how belief in God and others has shaped his 93 years.

“To me, ‘faith’ is not just a noun but also a verb,” the former president writes in his latest — and possibly last — book.

*****

"My publishers felt that, with the world situation today, a lot of people have lost faith in basic principles that shouldn’t be ever questioned: faith in democracy, faith in freedom, faith in equality, faith in the integrity of the truth, faith in the idea of education, faith in ourselves, quite often, faith in our fellow human beings."

*****

"The next real challenge for us is to learn how to apply, I’d say, Christian and other religious principles in learning how to live with each other in harmony and mutual respect and even some elements of love with those with whom we disagree. And that’s a major challenge that’s very difficult to achieve but I think it’s the most important thing that we face today."

*****

For what do you want to be remembered most?

"Well, I wouldn’t mind people remembering me as a Habitat Build volunteer. But also I would say in that White House and in The Carter Center we’ve tried to emphasize peace and human rights. And I try to be a champion of peace. I was able, and fortunate enough, to keep my country at peace for four years, which is kind of a rare achievement, and also to be a champion of human rights. So that’s what I’m proud of, among other things. I was blessed with a good wife and a good marriage."

Trump's Palm Beach visit to include side trip to Miami on tax reform

Source: PalmBeachPost.com, by Mike Stucka

Details of President Donald Trump’s next trip to South Florida are beginning to come in.

Federal Aviation Administration flight restrictions issued Friday morning suggest Trump will take a short side trip Monday to Miami, sometime between 11:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The restrictions are centered on Miami International Airport.

*****

An earlier advisory suggests Trump is coming to Palm Beach from this Sunday to the following Sunday, April 22. Details of that trip have not been issued yet. Federal officials have also issued an advisory alerting to expected VIP travel to Key West.

Trump is scheduled to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at his Mar-a-Lago resort on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The porn star known as Stormy Daniels is scheduled to perform in strip shows Friday and Saturday across from Trump’s golf course. She has said she had a 2006 affair with Trump, and is fighting him and his lawyer in court. On Thursday, Trump lawyer Michael Cohen asked for a stay in that lawsuit, saying it could have Fifth Amendment implications for a criminal investigation into him. Daniels is represented by Michael Avenatti, who has worked in Palm Beach County before.

'American Atheists' places president on leave pending investigation

Sharing bad things about 'religion' groups seems to be in vogue, so in that spirit...

Announcement Regarding American Atheists President David Silverman

The chair of the American Atheists Board of Directors, Neal Cary, has released the following statement:

On the evening of Saturday, April 7, 2018, the American Atheists Board of Directors received a complaint regarding David Silverman, the President of American Atheists. The Board takes very seriously the concerns expressed and, in accordance with organization policies, the Board has placed Mr. Silverman on paid leave while an independent investigation is conducted. Mr. Silverman has pledged his full cooperation with the investigation.

The Board, led by Vice President Kathleen Johnson and myself, will fulfill the duties of the President while Mr. Silverman is on leave. National Program Director Nick Fish will oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization.

While Mr. Silverman is on leave, American Atheists will continue our work protecting the separation of religion and government, elevating the voices of atheists in our nation’s public discourse, and supporting our members and atheist communities across the country.

We are committed to transparency and openness about this process and will release more information as it becomes available.

Today on Web MD: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (ICYMI)

Must be getting a lot of searches!

What might you see in someone with narcissistic personality disorder?

The word comes from a Greek myth in which a handsome young man named Narcissus sees his own reflection in a pool of water and falls in love with it.

Sound like someone you know? Are people often upset with him? Is it hard for him to keep relationships? Does he tend to put himself first and think he knows the only “right” way? Someone with narcissistic personality disorder might also:

• Think about himself most of the time and talk about himself a lot

• Crave attention and admiration

• Exaggerate his talents and achievements

• Believe he’s special

• Set unrealistic goals

• Have wide, fast mood swings

• Have a hard time taking others’ feelings seriously

• Strive to win, whatever it takes

• Fantasize about unlimited success, money, and power
