The Treasury Department turned over Hunter Biden’s confidential financial records to Republican senators despite refusing to release President Donald Trump’s tax returns as required by law.
Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Ron Johnson, R-Wis., announced that they will investigate Biden, the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, and “his associates during the Obama administration” just one hour after the Senate voted to acquit Trump in an impeachment trial with no new witnesses or documents sparked by the president’s push to investigate his political rivals. There is no evidence nor credible allegations that either Hunter or Joe Biden did anything illegal.
The senators said the Senate Finance and Homeland Security Committees will investigate Biden’s work in China and Ukraine. They announced the investigation in a letter to Secret Service Director James Murray, asking for information about “the protective detail that Hunter Biden received while his father was Vice President,” as well as a “list of all dates and locations of travel, international and domestic, for Hunter Biden.”
A spokesperson for Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., the top Democrat on the Finance Committee, told Yahoo News, which first reported the story, that the Treasury Department had already complied with the Republicans’ request for documents related to Hunter Biden and Burisma, the Ukrainian gas firm as the heart of Trump’s conspiracy theories.

'Out of 100 senators, zero believe you on the argument there is no quid pro quo,' Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) told Donald Trump's impeachment lawyers.
In the middle of Donald Trump's Senate impeachment trial, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) had some blunt advice for Trump's legal team: Quit pretending there was no quid pro quo.
"Out of 100 senators, zero believe you on the argument there is no quid pro quo," Cruz said to Trump's defense team, according to the senator's own recollection that he shared with CNN on Wednesday. "Stop making it," Cruz added.
Cruz's revelation came after the Senate voted to acquit Trump on two articles of impeachment, one of which accused Trump of withholding military aid to Ukraine in an attempt to pressure the country into opening investigations into Trump's political foes, including former Vice President Joe Biden.
A majority of senators, including several Republicans, publicly admitted Trump was wrong to engage in such a quid pro quo with Ukraine.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) is the latest Republican continuing to obsess over Hillary Clinton's emails.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) turned his attention back to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's years-old emails this week, the same day he voted to acquit Donald Trump on two articles of impeachment.
On Wednesday, Johnson sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo demanding more information about a 2019 State Department investigation that exonerated Clinton of wrongdoing.
In his letter, Johnson, who was first elected in 2010, said he had been investigating Clinton's emails for almost five years and was determined to continue that work.
"Since March 2015, I have conducted oversight of Clinton's private email server," he wrote. "As part of that continued oversight, I write to request additional information about the Department's September 2019 report."

CNN commentator Rick Santorum doesn’t always agree with President Donald Trump when he’s on television, but he was caught in the celebration audience for the president’s post-impeachment event. It wasn’t in the press area.
For many employees of news stations or newspapers, even donating to a candidate is unacceptable, but Santorum pretends to stand in moral opposition to the president while celebrating him just a few rows back in the White House.
Just hours prior to taking his seat at the White House, Santorum was on CNN blasting Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) for voting “guilty” on the first article of impeachment. He claimed that the vote made “vulnerable Republicans more vulnerable,” because Romney was willing to vote his conscience, but Republicans in difficult seats refused to do so.

Trump warned to stay out of 'foreign influence operations' by Senate Intel Committee

On Thursday, the Republican-controlled Senate Intelligence Committee released a report outlining steps that should be taken to prevent “foreign influence campaigns” from interfering in the 2020 presidential election.
One of the key recommendations was that President Donald Trump stop asking for political help from such schemes — despite the fact that less than 24 hours before, a majority of the committee’s members voted to acquit Trump of abuse of power for trying to do precisely that.
“The President of the United States should take steps to separate himself … from political considerations when handling issues related to foreign intelligence operations,” stated the report. “These steps should explicitly include putting aside politics when addressing the American people on election threats and marshalling all the resources of the U.S. Government to effectively confront the threat.”

Trump team uses Iowa caucus to spread lies about election 'rigging'

It's the latest in a long history of Trump and his supporters promoting unfounded theories about election rigging.
Donald Trump's campaign manager and many of his surrogates were quick to claim after Monday's Iowa caucuses that a delay in announcing results is proof the entire nomination process is "rigged." This is the latest in a long history of Team Trump promoting conspiracy theories about election rigging.
Iowa's state Democratic Party told reporters Monday night it was reviewing the numbers "out of an abundance of caution" and would release results from the first-in-the-nation voting on Tuesday. With no evidence whatsoever, Trump's 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale quickly suggested something nefarious might be going on.
"Quality control = rigged?" Parscale tweeted. He told a Washington Post reporter, "It would be natural for people to doubt the fairness of the process."
Trump's oldest son stated the "rigging" theory as a fact. "The fix is in... AGAIN" Donald Trump Jr. claimed. He also suggested Democratic Party operatives were inventing fake votes for their preferred candidate. "Tens of thousands of ballots all for Joe Biden being shipped to Iowa from Broward County Florida as we speak. 'Don't worry folks we got this covered' DNC operatives."

Rand Paul outs alleged whistleblower despite warning from fellow Republican

Some Republicans, including Paul, have been trying repeatedly to circulate a name for the whistleblower whose complaint led to Trump's impeachment.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) attempted to expose the alleged name of the whistleblower who triggered Donald Trump's impeachment by putting his name on a sign on the Senate floor Tuesday.
As Paul argued against removing Trump from office, he included the name as part of an attempt to allege a "plot" targeting Trump.
Paul's outing attempt comes just a day after fellow Republican, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), warned against such attacks.
"Attempts by anyone to oust a whistleblower just to sell an article or score a political point—those are not helpful at all. It's not the treatment any whistleblower deserves," Grassley said.

NBC/WSJ poll: Country remains divided over Trump's impeachment trial

WASHINGTON — Majorities of American voters believe that President Donald Trump abused his power and obstructed Congress in the Ukraine scandal, but the public remains split — largely along party lines — over whether those actions justify his removal from office.
Those are the findings of a new national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released as the U.S. Senate continues its impeachment trial of Trump, with Republicans on the verge of acquitting the president in the GOP-controlled chamber after voting against allowing witnesses.
The survey also finds Trump trailing the major Democratic presidential candidates in hypothetical matchups for the general election, and it shows how stable the president’s standing has been during the entire impeachment episode.
“We’ve been through an impeachment inquiry in the House, a trial in the Senate, and America’s attitudes about Donald Trump have hardly budged,” said Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates, who conducted this survey with Republicans pollsters at Public Opinion Strategies.

How Mitch McConnell pulled off a near-impossible impeachment feat

(CNN)When the Senate impeachment trial began on January 21, two things seemed certain -- or at least very, very likely:
1) There would be witnesses called by both sides.
2) The trial would still be going when President Donald Trump came to Capitol Hill to deliver his State of the Union address two weeks later on February 4.
With Tennessee GOP Sen. Lamar Alexander's announcement late Thursday night that he would vote against calling witnesses, it now looks very, very likely that not only will there be no witnesses -- the first time that has been the case in a Senate impeachment trial -- but that the entire trial could wrap up by Friday night or early Saturday morning.
How? One man: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
From beginning to (what looks like the) end, the Kentucky Republican has carefully -- and quietly -- executed a strategy designed to keep his conference in line on key votes.
It began with McConnell's power play earlier this month, announcing that he had 51 votes to move forward with the start of the Senate impeachment trial with no promises made on whether or not witnesses would be called or further documents would be sought. McConnell's opening gambit effectively knee-capped Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who had been holding on to the two articles of impeachment passed by the House late last year in hopes of extracting concessions from McConnell.
