Rabbi Calls for Jewish Leaders to Defend Dershowitz Against Rape Claim

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, a prolific political and cultural commentator who appears sporadically on cable news, wrote an op-ed in the New York Observer Tuesday morning calling on Jews everywhere to defend attorney Alan Dershowitz, who was accused of sexual assault in a recent civil suit against billionaire investor Jeffrey Epstein.

Boteach, as did Dershowitz himself, likened the accusation to the many scurrilous defamations the Jews have historically suffered, ranging from accusations of blood libel to Palestinian genocide, and added that Dershowitz has already been tested by the scores of death threats he receives for his defense of Israel. He called upon Jews to defend Dershowitz as if from these attacks.

“Where are the Jewish leaders to rise to Mr. Dershowitz’s defense?” Boteach asked. “I would like to believe that, at the very least, what Alan Dershowitz deserves is the gratitude of his community. And that means that you stand up for a man when he is down, especially when not a shred of evidence has been brought against him.”

“I have always wondered at the Jewish community in times of scandal,” he added. “We run from it like the plague.”

Boteach defended the attorney from the charges, despite the fact that “there is no way any of us can know if any of this is true.”

First of all, check out the bolded (by me) line: I don't know if he did it, but let's defend him anyway. WTF???

Secondly, check the time of the article and the time that I posted it: Perfectly fine for LBN.

Third: DUer azurnoir, who has locked a thread of mine in the past, didn't do so here, merely reminding me to correct the link I had provided, which was promptly done.

Fourth: After 23 replies and 2 recs, the thread was locked as "Off-topic" by Sissyk, who has not responded to my hours-ago request to unlock.

i then posted this in Good Reads. This time, my words were hidden outright!

Question: How was this thread off-topic? Bill Cosby threads have been posted without interference. I myself posted a thread about Jameis Winston and Ben Roethlisberger's swept-under-the-rug sex assaults, with no resulting problem. Why is it only in THIS case, where a prominent, politically-active rabbi is urging other Jews to "circle the wagons" around an even more prominent "Member of the Tribe," as elleng herself put it---why is it only now that DU puts it foot down?

I now, sadly, know the answer to that question: This "Democratic" Underground, like AIPAC, is a Jewish-controlled website, with permitted criticism of WASPs, Irish, Poles, Blacks, Asians, Native Americans, and every other ethno-religious group except for Gawd's Chosen Ones!

I can only hope that the Jews who run this place take a moment, just a moment, to consider the FACT that they are doing more to promote antisemitism than could any hundred David Dukes!

‘Cosby Show’ actress Phylicia Rashad defends Bill Cosby

Source: Washington Post

By Soraya Nadia McDonald January 7 at 4:54 AM

Phylicia Rashad, the actress who played Bill Cosby’s wife, Claire Huxtable, on “The Cosby Show,” has finally broken her silence about the many allegations of rape and sexual abuse being levied against her former co-star. She maintained there was an orchestrated effort to take down Cosby.

Rashad defended Cosby in an exclusive interview with Showbiz 411?s Roger Friedman at a luncheon for “Selma,” hosted by Paramount Pictures in New York.

More than 24 women have come forward to say that Cosby attempted to drug or sexually assault them, including models Janice Dickinson and Beverly Johnson.

“Forget these women,” Rashad told Friedman. “What you’re seeing is the destruction of a legacy. And I think it’s orchestrated. I don’t know why or who’s doing it, but it’s the legacy. And it’s a legacy that is so important to the culture.”

When Friedman asked Rashad about Johnson and Dickinson specifically, he said Rashad responded, “Oh, please.”

Lawyers in Prince Andrew underage sex case file defamation suit against Alan Dershowitz

Two lawyers representing a woman who claims to have had sex while a minor with prominent US criminal defence lawyer Alan Dershowitz filed a defamation lawsuit against him on Tuesday.

Former federal judge Paul Cassell and Florida plaintiffs attorney Bradley Edwards filed the lawsuit in a Florida circuit court, accusing Dershowitz of initiating a public media assault on their reputation and character, according to court documents.

In a filing in Florida federal court last week, Cassell and Edwards said their client, identified as Jane Doe ž3, was forced as a minor by financier Jeffrey Epstein to have sex with several people, including Dershowitz and Prince Andrew.

Dershowitz on Monday filed a sworn statement in Florida federal court denying he had sex with an underage girl on Epstein’s private plane and island. Buckingham Palace has also denied the allegations against Prince Andrew.

[Maryland Governor] O'Malley to close $400 million budget shortfall

Source: Baltimore Sun

Gov. Martin O'Malley is poised to make budget cuts and take other steps to eliminate this year's revenue shortfall of more than $400 million before Gov.-elect Larry Hogan takes over, the administration said Tuesday.

O'Malley, who leaves office Jan. 21, will use his last opportunity to address Maryland's immediate budget woes by taking $211 million in cuts to the Board of Public Works, which is expected to approve them. The board's meeting Wednesday is the final one of the governor's term.

Ron Boehmer, a spokesman for the governor, said the remaining $200 million of the shortfall would be addressed through fund transfers, position eliminations and other actions O'Malley will propose to the General Assembly when it convenes next week.

Combined, the actions will leave the state with a minuscule $5.5 million cushion in this year's general fund budget of about $16 billion. Hogan will still need to deal with a projected $750 million shortfall in next year's budget.

Pro-democracy lawmakers walk out of Hong Kong council

Source: AP

HONG KONG (AP) — Pro-democracy legislators in Hong Kong walked out of the chamber Wednesday to protest the government's intention to stick with a proposal to screen candidates for the city's top executive in 2017, an issue that sparked massive street protests throughout the fall.

Chief Secretary Carrie Lam, the city's No. 2 official, opened a second consultation on the electoral process by addressing the territory's Legislative Council. Lawmakers aligned with the pro-democracy movement calling for free elections immediately protested by raising yellow umbrellas — symbols of the protests— and walked out.

Pro-democracy legislators hold 40 percent of seats, enough to block the election plan.

They accuse leaders in Hong Kong and mainland China of breaking promises to let the city choose its chief executive through universal suffrage. The central Chinese government had pledged such a vote when the 7-million-people financial hub was handed from colonial British to Chinese rule in 1997, under a form of autonomy dubbed "one country, two systems."

"I urge the members to think twice and not completely destroy the limited space for political discussion even before the second consultation has started," Lam said to a half-empty chamber. "Many of my friends feel extreme pessimism whether this proposal of universal suffrage can be passed. ... We will make our best endeavors until the last moment."

Snow falls in Middle East as strong winter storm strikes

Source: AP

By The Associated Press
Jan. 7, 2015 2:34 AM EST

Snow has fallen across parts of the Middle East as part of a strong winter storm moving through the region.

Snow accumulated in the Golan Heights and northern Israel on Wednesday morning, as well as the mountains of Lebanon. Schools across Jerusalem closed ahead of a forecast warning of 10 inches (25 centimeters) of snowfall.

Many worried about the storm in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, where hundreds of thousands of refugees from Syria's civil war live, many in tents.

Heavy fogs also blanketed parts of Pakistan on Wednesday morning. Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority said officials temporarily closed Islamabad's Benazir Bhutto International Airport due to the weather, diverting incoming flights to Lahore.

TORONTO (AP) — A scandal-plagued Bill Cosby returns to the stage Wednesday night for the first time since November and his reception is certain to be mixed, with some planning protests, others vowing not to show up and still others saying they will heckle the comedian.

The three performances in Canada follow sexual assault allegations by more than 15 women and come after Cosby saw at least 10 performances get canceled on his North American tour.

The 77-year-old comedian is scheduled to appear at the Centre in the Square in Kitchener, Ontario, on Wednesday; at the Budweiser Gardens in London, Ontario, on Thursday; and at the Hamilton Place Theatre in Hamilton, Ontario, on Friday.

"I don't know how people in good conscience can go and enjoy the show," said Maureen Dragasevich.

Dragasevich, 59, said she and her family bought tickets and were once huge fans, but they're not going now.
