Massive Anti-Coup Protests Explode Across Bolivia 'Against the Many Violations to Democracy'

From the article:

Chanting "resign now" to Bolivia's interim, self-declared president Jeanine Añez, protesters across the Latin American country on Friday made their displeasure with the overthrow of the government by right-wing Christian extremists last Sunday known.

Thousands of demonstrators marched through the cities of La Paz and El Alto. Friday's protests follow days of unrest as the Bolivian people rejected Sunday's coup, which forced democratically-elected President Evo Morales to resign and flee the country.

Fox News Poll Shows Trump Is Crumbling In Two Key Swing States

From the article:

According to the Fox News survey, Trump would lose the battleground state of Nevada if he faces any of the top three Democrats – Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren – in next year’s election.
He trails Biden and Sanders by seven points in the state, and he’s bested by Warren by three points. In a hypothetical matchup with South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Trump and the Democrat each earn 41 percent support.

Trump Supporters Lose It After Fox News Calls Bill Taylor's Testimony Damaging To Trump

From the article:

The right is outraged after Chris Wallace called Bill Taylor’s testimony damaging to Trump on Fox News.
Wallace said, “I think that William Taylor was a very impressive witness and very damaging to Trump. First of all, as you pointed out, he took very copious notes at almost every conversation. When he put quotes in his opening statement, he said those were direct quotes from what was said. It also doesn’t hurt that he has a voice like Edward R. Murrow, so he’s a very impressive presence up there, and I think very non-political. He went out of his way to only talk about what he knew, what he was testifying to.”

The Other Slave Trade

From the article:

Most Americans are well aware of the Underground Railroad that helped escaped Southern slaves find freedom in the North, but few have heard of the Reverse Underground Railroad that delivered free Northern black Americans into slavery. That’s probably not just because we prefer uplifting stories over shocking and depressing ones. It’s also because the latter railroad, which transported about the same number of people as the former—hundreds each year—puts the lie to the notion of the North as a safe haven, making the nation’s original sin even harder to forgive.

Stolen, a new book by Richard Bell, tells the remarkable and brutal story of this other railroad, focusing on one horrifying case for which significant documentation exists. It involves the abduction of five African American boys from their families in Philadelphia in 1825.
What happened to these youngsters was not an aberration. During the first half of the nineteenth century, tens of thousands of free Northern black people, many of them children, were kidnapped into slavery in Southern states. Plantation owners in Southern states would pay $400 to $700 per newfound slave, then a tidy sum (comparable to $9,000 to $15,000 today).

Before reading this article this morning, I had never read anything about this "underground Railroad in reverse", where free blacks were kidnapped and sent south to be sold.

What 1619 Means to Me

From the article:

I have mixed feelings about the 400th anniversary of the arrival of African slaves, my ancestors, to Jamestown, Virginia. That’s in part because, earlier this year, while working as a visiting scholar at James Madison University in Virginia, I made my first trip to Jamestown.

From grade school through high school, I barely was taught anything about slavery—how my ancestors had been stolen from Africa, stripped of their names, languages, cultures, and identities.....

The year 1619 means, to me, the mental brainwashing and physical and spiritual devastation of an entire race of people. It undermines the morality of America from the beginning; and we are paying the price for it in this twenty-first century, when so many people are still trafficking in the hatred, violence, and fear-mongering that was levied against my ancestors back then.

What we need in America, what has not happened, is an honest national conversation on race that tells the entire truth about the legacy of slavery. We must acknowledge, per Dr. Ivan Van Sertima’s landmark book, They Came Before Columbus, that this part of the world did not begin with European history, and that black people and other people of color have been in these spaces and places all along.

What many US students learn, and have learned, is a very sanitized version of US history designed to promote the interests of the very rich who actually control the country.

Who will have tofurkey, or a similar product, for Thanksgiving?

We like the Trader Joe version for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Plus, I cube the remaining tofurkey loaf and add it to a split pea with vegetables soup.

There are transcripts, and there are transcripts.

There are verbatim transcripts, which literally contain every word and sound that the speakers make, and there are non-verbatim transcripts.

A non-verbatim transcript is a condensed, edited version of what was said.

And as we all saw when Barr released his own version of the Mueller Report, what is left out is generally critical.

All of the Trump nonsense about releasing the transcript is meaningless. It is another diversion from the facts because the revealed facts are overwhelming in that they all support that Trump used attempted bribery and extortion to attack a political rival.

FBI report: Jews the target of overwhelming number of religious-based hate crimes

From the article:

Newly released FBI data shows that Jews and Jewish institutions were the overwhelming target of religion-based hate crimes in the United States last year.
The 2018 Hate Crime Statistics reported 7,120 total hate crimes last year, compared to 7,175 in 2017, a decline of less than 1%.
Hate crimes motivated by religious bias accounted for 1,550 offenses, and the majority of those — 57.8% — were anti-Jewish.

From the article:

According to The Hill, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he won’t be paying attention to the incriminating testimony from key Trump administration officials.
The report notes that “McConnell is one of several Republican senators who said Tuesday that they don’t plan to watch the House impeachment proceedings when they are televised this week.”
