guillaumeb's JournalNew Report Shows Trump's 'Tough on Crime' Stance Doesn't Extend to 'Lawbreaking Corporations'
From the article:
"Trump, who once asserted that he was 'not going to let Wall Street get away with murder,' now is allowing industry after industry to get away with just about anything," said Alan Zibel, the report's lead author and research director for Public Citizen's Corporate Presidency Project.
"Trump's appointees' apparent belief that enforcement of consumer protection laws should be a last resort," Zibel noted, "represents a dramatic about-face from Trump's claim of populism during his campaign."

Like the MAGA slogan, and the "drain the swamp" slogan, this is and was another of Trump's lies that might have deceived low information voters.

The Grace of Love: Leonard Cohen and the Sufis (Part 3)
From the article:
Making Love: Leonard Cohen and the Sufis (Part 1)
Guests of Love: Leonard Cohen and the Sufis (Part 2)
Much of Cohens music, especially in his later years, was about grace. How we dont deserve it, but it makes its way into our lives anyway. There is a crack in everything he sang, Thats how the light gets in.....
(Cohen wrote
In streams of light I clearly saw
The dust you seldom see,
Out of which the nameless makes
A name for one like me....
Rumi, too, identifies with dust when confronted with this indescribable One:
Dust settles upon my head and upon my metaphors,
for You are beyond anything we can either think or say

Atheist summits aim to find community, and power, in networking nonbelievers
From the article:
The event was the first of three summits planned by Secular Coalition for America, an advocacy group based in Washington, D.C. Later this month, similar gatherings will be held in Greenville, S.C., and Nashville, Tenn. Like Temecula, Greenville is outside of an urban hub, and all three cities event atmospheres are more seminar than corporate convention. The organizers of the summit wanted their attendees to be able to see each other.
Sarah Levin, director of grass roots and community programs at Secular Coalition for America, said that her organization recently found that nonbelievers felt well-connected to national secular organizations but disconnected from others like them locally.
We realized we need to help strengthen these networks of local groups so that they can be mobilized for political advocacy, Levin said.

Sorry, President Obama. Trump is the "in" President.
Obama was sane.
Trump is insane.
Obama was articulate,.
Trump is inarticulate.
Obama was experienced.
Trump is inexperienced.
IN many ways, Trump is truly the "in" President.
Trump's strong points are many. Such as his racism, and his ignorance, and his misogyny, and his sheer stupidity.
Unfortunately for him and the country, all of Trump's strong points are negatives.
New play 'American Griot' explores blues music's Muslim and African roots
From the article:
Or at least thats how Ronnie Malley remembers it being taught in school.
Something that was embedded in my mind from schooling was that Western music was the pinnacle of all music, said Malley, a Palestinian-American Muslim living in Chicago. And that was difficult for me to digest. Because, well, music has been around for a very long time.
But as the actor and music teacher studied the history of European music in his spare time, he became interested in the influence of Muslim rule in Spain on classical music. This led to his reading about the African predecessors of some modern Western instruments. Then, one day about five years ago, Malley stumbled across some research that traced the roots of American blues music back to West African Muslim slaves.
His discovery led Malley to imagine a musical play that explored the shared history of Islam, Africa, slavery and blues music through the eyes of Mamadou, a fictional 18th-century Muslim griot, or storyteller musician, who has been sold into slavery....
In her 1998 book Servants of Allah, historian Sylviane Diouf, whose work inspired Malley, introduced the now-popular idea that the style of the field holler, an early building block of the blues, evolved from West African Muslims melodic recitation of the Quran and, particularly, the vocal call to prayer.

History, as we all know, is written by the rich. And in the history of US slavery, the fact that a large number of African slaves were Muslims is never mentioned.
Why does the US corporate media only use the word "mandate" when the GOP is in charge?
When Bush Jr. essentially stole the 2000 election, and did the same in 2004, he claimed a mandate for significant change in each instance.
When Obama legitimately and won massively in 2008, the US corporate media told us all that it was necessary for the Democrats to seek common ground with the GOP. There was no talk of a mandate even thought the Democrats controlled Congress and the Presidency.
In 2016, Trump only won the Electoral College, losing the popular vote, and even that EC vote was due to voter suppression and Russian interference. And we cannot forget that the same corporate media essentially created the myth of Trump, the brilliant businessman and master dealmaker.
And Trump claims a mandate.
So is a mandate something that can only be claimed by the GOP?
Scary socialism 101.
First, we must paint socialism as what existed in the USSR under Communist rule. That way, the very term will take on negative implications as everyone knows that the US values freedom over oppression.
But what if we sat down and imagined what socialism might look like in the US.
Imagine that the Government ran a huge business, bigger than Amazon, and rather than raise prices to boost profits, the Government offered the service at a price much lower than other comparable businesses. And gave better service.
And imagine that, unlike Amazon, the workers were unionized and enjoyed good wages and benefits.
Well you do not have to imagine it, because it exists in the US in the form of the USPS, the United States Postal Service.
For another example, imagine a country where the private power utilities were nationalized. And the profits from these now publicly owned utilities went to the citizens rather than a few shareholders and highly paid executives.
Well, you do not have to imagine that either, because Canada did just that starting in the 1940s.
And THAT is what actual democratic socialism can and does look like.
Progressive Tax Takes Aim at Wall Street Transactions, Financial Crashes
From the article:
"The Wall Street Tax Act would tax the sale of stocks, bonds, and derivatives at 0.1 percent," said Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hi.), who introduced the bill (pdf) with U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) as lead co-sponsor.
"A stock trade of $1,000 would incur a tax of just one dollar," Schatz added.
The bill was also cosponsored in the Senate by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), who is seeking the Democratic nomination for president, and Sen. Jeff Merkeley (D-Ore.).

Another good step in the right direction. Yes, high frequency/high volume traders would be the most affected, but Wall Street was one of the main reasons for the crash.
