Roseanne Barr for President?

Now that the Presidential Barr (not a typo) has been lowered so far that only a coal miner could find it, is it conceivable that Roseanne Barr will run for President?

Unlike Trump, Barr has some comedic talent, but she is a racist clown, and the GOP big tent has its share and more of racist clowns.

Richard Paul Evans' fake news about feminism

From the article:

It hasn’t been a terrific week for Mormon novelist Richard Paul Evans, author of The Christmas Box and other bestsellers.
First, there were the accusations of sexual harassment, which erupted on Monday. A female author had accused Evans months ago of being overly physical with her last year at FanX, which is the huge annual Comic Con in Salt Lake City.....

Then, in an effort to defend himself against those charges, Evans was interviewed by KUTV in Salt Lake. He succeeded only in digging himself in deeper.

Still scraping by while the bankers celebrate

From the article:

TEN YEARS ago, the Great Recession shook the world financial system, setting off a panic in corporate boardrooms and ravaging the household finances of millions of working-class families.
Today, America’s corporate executives are rejoicing in the new Trumpian era of deregulation and corporate pillaging — but ordinary people are still struggling to get by from week to week, and living in fear of a disaster that will plunge them into destitution.....

Meanwhile, on Main Street, more than four in 10 American households struggle on a monthly basis to afford housing, child care, food, transportation and health care without going into debt, according to a recent report.....

But it is also a time of record debt for both consumers and corporations, and despite the steady increase in official employment levels since the Great Recession, wage growth has remained stagnant, meaning continuing hardship for workers and the poor.

Be thou my vision

An amazing version of an Irish hymn by a singer with incredible control.

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light

America banned Muslims long before Donald Trump

Speaking of white privilege, it is important to understand that melanin, or the lack of it, was and is not the only factor to consider when discussing "whiteness".

From the article:

The Naturalization Act of 1790, which limited citizenship to “any alien, being a free white person,” drastically restricted the ability of Muslims to become citizens. The requirement meant that immigrants seeking lawful residence and citizenship were compelled to convince authorities that they fit within the statutory definition of whiteness. Arabs, along with Italians, Jews and others, were forced to litigate their identities in line with prevailing conceptions of whiteness — which fluctuated according to geographic origin, physical appearance and religion. Courts unwaveringly framed Islam as hostile to American ideals and society, casting Muslim immigrants as outside the bounds of whiteness and a threat to the identity and national security of the United States.

The bolding is mine.

And:

Indeed, the first court ruling to grant naturalization to an Arab-born Muslim was for a Saudi man, in Ex Parte Mohriez, in 1944 — and, even then, based only on the finding that Arabs should be considered part of “the white race.”
Despite the Mohriez decision, the Naturalization Act remained the law of the land until 1952, and restrictive immigration quotas stayed on the books.

This is covered by Khaled Beydoun in his brilliant book American Islamophobia. He builds on Edward Said's idea of Orientalism to show how Muslims are also part of the other that white Americans are taught to fear.

Trump, and the "perjury trap".

After watching Rudy Giuliani humiliate himself once again this morning, as he desperately calls out for attention and relevance, I heard him say that Trump would be entering a perjury trap if Trump were to testify.

The real issue is that Trump lies about everything, so any perjury trap would be a trap of his own creation. Because Trump is a lifelong crook and con man, he generally must lie about everything to everyone.

I represented people for over 30 years as a union representative, and I always told people to tell the truth because it is what happened. If one decides to lie, that lie might be contradicted after the telling, and then the initial story must be revised to fit the truth that was revealed.

And we have seen this happen repeatedly in the Trump saga as he or his various spokes-liars have to continuously revise and recraft.

Leonard Cohen wrote: "There is a crack in everything....." (x-posted from religion)

Leonard Cohen wrote: "There is a crack in everything....."
From the Leonard Cohen song, Anthem:

There is a crack in everything (there is a crack in everything)
That's how the light gets in

What does this have to do with religion?

Consider the concept called “original sin”. Many Christians believe that humans are born with sin as a result of being descended from Adam. Jesus said nothing about this idea, nor is it directly spoken of in the Bible, but the idea is very popular and has been much discussed among theologians.

But if we consider the fact that humans are not perfect, and that nothing in creation is perfect, (“There is a crack in everything”), original sin can be seen as an acknowledgment of this inherent and inevitable human imperfection.

As to the second line, “That’s how the light gets in”, I see that light as the realization of the Creator’s existence, and the first step on the path of enlightenment. We must admit our imperfection, and we must work to perfect what is cracked.

Others may read the lines differently. Leonard Cohen himself was a Jew who also became a Buddhist monk, but speaking of his maternal religion, he said: "I’m not looking for a new religion. I’m quite happy with the old one, with Judaism".

GOP evangelical voters can be anti-abortion and Trump supporters.

How? Consider the following rationalization on the part of an evangelical Trump voter:

If Trump has an affair with a porn star and she gets pregnant, and has an abortion, it is actually her fault for enticing Trump and cheating with him. The "fallen woman" syndrome. Trump was merely a man giving in to the sexual desire provoked by the woman. Eve tempting Adam.

Thus Trump avoids all responsibility and the Trump voter can still think of Trump as a basically good man.

Thoughts?

How Trump's nativist tweets overlap with anti-Muslim and anti-Latino hate crimes

From the article:

In the run-up to, and since his election as President of the United States, Donald Trump’s words have attracted a lot of attention. Many commentators and activists have charged that Trump’s rhetoric has fueled hate crimes in the United States against minorities. Until recently, many individuals voicing such concerns pointed to high-profile individual cases, rather than systematic data. Now that’s changing as new research is emerging.

The challenge to Catholicism's consistent ethic of economic life

From the article:

In 1986, the U.S. Catholic bishops issued a pastoral letter on the American economy that amounted to an attack on the Reagan administration’s economic policies. As such, it was entirely consistent with the critical view of free market capitalism that had characterized Catholic social teaching at least since Pope Leo XIII’s 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum.
