We knew what we were doing: Gushee on Trump, 2015-2016

From the article:

I have watched the first six months of the Trump Presidency mainly in stunned silence.
In this column, what I will do is quote some of what I said about Donald Trump my Religion News Service columns during the presidential campaign.
The reason for doing so should be obvious. We knew what we were doing, and we did it anyway. The warning signs about Donald Trump were everywhere, and we elected him president anyway. That undoubtedly says far more about us than it does about him.

Hillary Wants to Preach

From the article:

Now, as Clinton works to rehabilitate her public image and figure out the next steps after her brutal November loss, religion is taking a central role. After long months of struggling to persuade Americans that she is trustworthy, authentic, and fundamentally moral, Clinton is lifting up an intimate, closely guarded part of herself. There are no more voters left to lose. In sharing her faith, perhaps Clinton sees something left to win, whether political or personal.

An interesting article.

A PSA about the horror of Publicity Deficit Disorder. Or PDD.

What inspired this was a recent post about Caitlyn Jenner and her conversion from ardent Trumpette to concerned citizen fighting for rights. I am in no way implying that she is not tremendously sincere in her newfound distaste for Trump and his position on LGBTQ issues, but it could be that she suffers from PDD.

PDD can strike at any time, anywhere, but for some reason denizens of reality TV universe seem to be particularly affected by the severest form of this devastating disorder. Symptoms include an unstoppable desire to be in front of a TV camera, an insatiable desire for publicity of any form, and a crippling feeling that without a camera nearby, one does not exist.

Previously undiagnosed sufferers include Donald Trump, Sarah Palin, Rudy Giuliani, Newt Gingrich, Ann Coulter, and of course, Caitlyn Jenner and every member of the Kardashian clan.

So in the spirit of helping out, I am writing this post to ask you all to wish for the best for all of these sufferers of PDD.

And if you can think of anyone whom I have forgotten, please feel free to add some names.

Interesting news: Rastafarian pot farm shootout sparks religious-use debate

From the article:

The shooting of two California deputies responding to a disturbance at a Rastafarian marijuana farm has drawn attention to religious use of the drug, sparking debate over whether churches should be protected from drug prosecutions......

Religious organizations throughout California have been growing marijuana for ceremonial purposes for years — and have been losing in court for just as long.

Does this represent overreach on the part of law enforcement, or is it a proper exercise of governmental function?

Democrats Willing to Fund Pro-Life Candidates to Win Back Congress

From the article:

After years of party polarization over abortion, Democrats may finally be taking steps toward welcoming more pro-life Christians into their ranks.............

Will the potential of luring voters who have avoided the party over the issue of abortion be worth the backlash from the Democratic base, including outspoken abortion-rights advocates?

Is this part of the problem, or part of the solution? If the Democratic Party is willing to compromise on the abortion issue, what else is on the table, so to speak?

In “Jesus Camp,” the premiere documentary by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, we watched as three children dedicated their young lives to Jesus Christ and the teachings of their church......

Interresting news: Drive-In Jesus

From the article:

I found myself back living in Florida not long ago and wanting to make a film that took on that idiosyncrasy. Driving from my parents’ house on the A1A highway along the east coast, I stumbled upon the Daytona Beach Drive-In Christian Church. At first the idea of sitting in a car to go to church seemed deranged to me. What could be more vacant of spirituality and human connection than going to church sealed off in the most alienating of American inventions, your car?

Religion is one area where socialization takes place. School is another, prison another. But at first glance, this seems like the anti-social alternative.

Rather than merely run against Trump, offer "An Even Better Deal"

From the article:

At the 1932 Democratic National Convention, Franklin D. Roosevelt declared, “Never before in modern history have the essential differences between the two major American parties stood out in such striking contrast as they do today.” Arguing that Republicans had offered “no path for the people below to climb back to places of security and of safety in our American life,” he called for a “new deal” to “restore America to its own people.”

The Democrats cannot run against Trump, they must run for a better deal.
