Why Pittsburgh matters. Anti-semitism makes a resurgence.

From the article:

We are shocked, but we are not surprised.
How could we be surprised? The novelist Rebecca West once said that Jews, having suffered so much, have an “unsurprisable mind.” Did we think that we, the American Jewish community, could splash blood upon our communal door and thus ward off the twin angels of hatred and death?
When we witnessed the madness in Charlottesville — “The Jews will not replace us!” — could we not have imagined that this could happen?

This Shabbat, American Jews drank from the bitter cup of tears from which other groups have already sipped. Blacks. Blacks praying in churches. Sikhs. Muslims. LGBTQ.

The racist in chief constantly appeals to the hatred that is always just below the surface, and his violent followers respond.

Voting rights, racism and Georgia's next governor

From the article:

ONE OF the most closely watched governor’s races in November is in Georgia, with a conservative white Republican, Brian Kemp, who has a history of trying to suppress voter turnout, running against a liberal Black Democrat, Stacey Abrams.
Kemp, the state’s current secretary of state, has made a name for himself during this campaign with his notoriously right-wing campaign videos — which feature him standing for the National Anthem, saying “Merry Christmas” in December and “God Bless You” when someone sneezes, and pointing a shotgun at his teenage son while he proclaims his devotion to the Second Amendment.

With Midterms in One Week, Bernie Sanders Says GOP Effort to Strip Healthcare

With Midterms in One Week, Bernie Sanders Says GOP Effort to Strip Healthcare From 32 Million Should Be Highlighted 'Every Hour of Every Day'

From the article:

As Republicans fervently work to distort their contemptible anti-healthcare record and pose as defenders of Americans with preexisting conditions with just seven days to go before the midterm elections, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) argued on Monday that the GOP's efforts to take healthcare from tens of millions of Americans must be highlighted "every hour of every day" until Nov. 6.

Is There Room for Discourse and Critical Thinking in Islam?

From the article:

I walked by the “Dawah Day” booth of the Muslim student group at my university and read something that I found interesting. Representing the five pillars of Islam were literally five walls that posed as actual pillars with the obligations written on each one. As I stood and read each pillar, I came across the second wall that read, “Praying five times a day in Arabic, the language prescribed to us in the Holy Quran.” In Arabic, I thought. Does it have to be in Arabic?...

Although I understood his point, I answered back, “My perfect emulation of the prophet would be having the deep connection with God that he had while praying and feeling the utmost spirituality that he felt. I cannot do that when I recite in Arabic because I don’t understand most of what I’m saying. I do understand when I read in English.”

Jeff Sessions speech interrupted by Methodist, Baptist clergy

From the article:

Attorney General Jeff Sessions was only moments into a speech on religious liberty Monday (Oct. 29) before he was interrupted by two ministers who called on him to “repent” for his role in enforcing Trump administration policy.
Sessions was speaking about “The Future of Religious Liberty” at a meeting in Boston hosted by the Boston Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society, a conservative legal group. But as soon as he began his remarks, a United Methodist minister, the Rev. Will Green of Ballard Vale United Church in Andover, Mass., began reciting Scripture.

Trump has a lot of things on his mind.

First, of course, is hairspray.

Second is hair coloring product.

Third is thinking about his next meal.

Fourth is thinking about his next wife. ( Is it legal for him to marry Ivanka?)

Fifth is worrying about Mueller.

Sixth is worrying about Adam Schiff and multiple House investigations.

Did I miss anything?

'While the Rest of the World Burned,' Billionaires Made More Money in 2017 Than Any Other Year

'While the Rest of the World Burned,' Billionaires Made More Money in 2017 Than Any Other Year in History

From the article:

During a year in which so much of the world faced deep poverty, the corrosive effects of austerity, and extreme weather caused by the worsening human-caused climate crisis—from devastating hurricanes to deadly wildfires and floods—one class of individuals raked in more money in 2017 than any other year in recorded history: the world's billionaires.

In honor of this milestone, the GOP wants to give the rich even more tax cuts while eliminating Social Security and every other social welfare program that benefits the bottom 99.9%.

Of Course Somebody Took Close-Up Pictures of Suspected Bomber's Van: Here They Are

From the article:

After federal authorities on Friday arrested 56-year-old Cesar Sayoc in connection with the explosive devices that were sent to nearly a dozen public officials and critics of President Donald Trump over the past week, a Twitter user posted close-up photos of the suspect's van, which is covered in photos of Trump, American flags, and bizarre right-wing paraphernalia.

Proud Boys try to spread terror from coast to coast

From the article:

THE PROUD Boys showed once again this month that violence and hate is at the heart of their organization—and that the left can’t let them go unopposed.
On October 13, in Portland, Oregon, the group’s thugs targeted mourning activists at a memorial for Patrick Kimmons, a Black man murdered by the Portland police, and then roamed the city’s downtown, looking for fights....

THE NEWS coverage during and after the event betrayed a clear anti-left bias from both the media and police officers themselves.
Republicans expressed horror at the “violent leftists” who targeted their stately midtown club with graffiti, a broken window and a note telling the club that it was “on notice” for inviting McInnes.
Yet it was the Metropolitan Republican Club that was guilty of provocation—by inviting a speaker whose explicit goal is to employ violence against political opponents. The invitation itself betrays the hard-right drift of a club that in past years wouldn’t have entertained the idea of associating itself with the Proud Boys, but has now openly embraced them.

As the GOP becomes more open in its longstanding embrace of racism, it is important that we all confront them.

On Rape/Sexual Assault Tropes in Muslim Communities - An Islamic Response (Part II)

From the article:

Rape culture isn’t limited to a Muslims nor does it manifest in the same ways in Muslim (or religions) and non-Muslim communities. Each culture and society has certain factors unique to them that contribute to an overall toxic and dangerous environment when it comes to sexual violence. Some attitudes, however are common across communities. The end result, is a deeply painful one: A society in which sexual violence continues to take place, often without consequences, due to the stigma and taboo surrounding the matter as well as its normalization.
